Story: Tre Singleton to the portal

This is where I am at as well. This is clearly not a good thing but I don’t think it’s catastrophic. Singleton is not an elite athlete and he can’t shoot. I’m sure his shooting will improve but I don’t think it will ever get to serviceable (I could be wrong). He could be a very good defender and rebounder, which is not nothing, but I don’t see him being anywhere close to all big material. And for those saying this is sour grapes, I have thought this all season.

I mean you're basically describing Chase Audige and I would gladly take him back.

Chase Audige was an elite athlete. Singleton is no where near as athletic. He is bigger and stronger so there’s that.

He plays a different position, too, but "elite defender and decent scorer" feels like Singleton's ceiling and that's basically Audige, even if Audige was more athletic. My point is this isn't like losing Buie or Martinelli, but Singleton is still a guy that could have had a LOT of value as he developed.

Audige had a "God mode" where he would go off and score 10 pts in 2 minutes on occasion while always playing exceptional defense. He was inconsistent, but we were sure lucky to have him in 2023.

What’s sad is I know after Mart’s last game, someone said something like “Boo showed Nick how to stay and now Nick showed Singleton how to stay and that’s how you build culture”.

The reality is, what Nick actually showed is that he likely left $1M or more on the table by not playing his last season elsewhere… and what he got for it was a terrible season where they were out of NCAAT bid contention by mid December. Meanwhile, he’s going to go play G League for a couple years and then go to China and his career earnings will likely never even match what he passed up for one year of NCAA ball somewhere else. A noble decision, but a very bad business decision.

THAT is what Tre learning from Nick. If you have a chance to make a ton more money and also a chance to actually win and raise your visibility for the next level, you have to take it. That’s really bad news for next year and the next decade if there aren’t changes immediately.
Meh. Think this is a misread.

It's a disappointment to lose Tre but it's not a great loss of basketball capital if our goal is to be a tournament team. He was not on a track to be an All-Big Ten player - the league is stocked, particularly among the top six or eight teams, with players ranked higher than him either from HS or experience, He started as a freshman but he didn't wow with any particular skill and was pretty disappointing in his distance shooting. I don't think a team on which he is the best player is a tournament team in a power league. So for him to have real value, we had to either land a better HS recruit or a Buie/Barnhizer/Mart - quality player through the portal, which I just don't think is going to happen given our portal returns from the past year. I think the player he will be next year is replaceable, but I don't think he or the replacement is the key piece to getting back to the tournament.

I thought you took advantage of the half price deal on the Rock?

multiple peeps with connections to the program confirmed the $1m offer. Not enough. Rumors are $1.2-1.3 on the table already for Big 12 to schools and Tennessee. Maybe Purdue gets involved.
I’m waiting on the Premium Rant Board like Rutgers has to be announced before I commit.

Until then I shall remain a proud, yet stingy, freeloader. 🪙 🤏

Lou liked a post where I mentioned it so maybe there’s a chance 🤞

All depends on what we end up with on the roster. If we only shop on the bargin basement aisle then next year is going to be beyond bad They should change the timing on ticket renewals so people can make a better decision based on the roster each year

If I was CCC I would get the **** out of NU. Until they realize this is basically professional sports and you can’t win with a Pittsburgh Pirates salary outflow going against the likes of the LA Dodgers, you will never be a consistent winner. You think Skenes will stay with the Pirates any longer than he has too? We have to at least get to the Baltimore Orioles to make a run.

All due respect, the comparison to MLB here is nonsense. The Pittsburgh Pirates may well be poorly run but they are neither financially incapable of retaining Paul Skenes nor building a competitive roster around him.

As for Collins, he is signed through 2028 and it seems quite unlikely NU will be asking him to leave before then.

I'll stick with my prediction, which is that while he might be a good player, he will not be the best player on a team that makes the tournament.

One of the issues for Collins is that his best teams have been build around guys playing together for a while. Pretty hard when you are starting from scratch every year

I am not sure I am following your point.

I was trying to convey that you need to spend a reasonable amount of money to be competitive. Not necessarily the most, but the least or near the bottom is guaranteed to result in losing records.

How would you like to build your staff in the business world if pretty much all of the top talent would go to your competition due to financial considerations? As a Manager, I would expect changes or consider jumping too. CCC is that Manager now.

So now moving the goal posts. What is next, won't be best player on Final Four or NC team?.

Our best player couple years ago was Buie, Last year Barnhizer before he went down and Martinelli this year, What did they all have in common? They played as Frosh and they did not do all that much, But they put in the work and developed, And by the time they were seniors they were really, really good.

Give Singleton time in the weight room and with the nutritionists and put 15-20 lbs of muscle on him and more time at this level and you will likely see similar improvements. Much better rebounding, better to hold his position, better drives and better outside shooting, Will that make him all BIG? Who knows (that is often political as we have seen) but he will likely be a very good and important player to whatever team he is on

He is from Indiana so closer to home. Regardless of where he goes, he will get paid. Fact that we were willing to put up that amount shows how important Collins felt he was. And who knows. Some of these guys might be just testing to see what opportunities exist for them

No, no, no. Here's my original post language: "I don't think a team on which he is the best player is a tournament team in a power league."

The three you named: One was All-Big Ten, One was drafted #44 in the NBA and plays minutes, one led BIG10 in scoring. I just don't see Singleton meeting any of those 3 bars.

Singleton was a true Frosh. He still had baby fat, Have you seen Martinelli up close recently? He is massively different that he was as a Frosh, He was a scrawny kid and now he is massive and solid, He got pushed around as a Frosh but that sure does not happen any more., The same was true of the other two, And likely the same will likely be true of Singleton as well. And if he puts in the effort to get there, he will become a very good player.

Is he gonna become Martinelli? Likely not as he is a different type of player, That does not mean he is not going to be very good and important to whatever team he will be with. You suggest we are not losing anything. But we are, We are losing a good talent with a whole lot of potential to grow to be an important part of the future.

Singleton has a higher ceiling than those guys imo. I don’t know if he’ll hit it, but he profiles as bigger and more athletic Barnhizer. You are judging a true freshman on a bad team against finished products. Tre is a tough loss.

Tre will be a stud. It’s ridiculous to think he isn’t a huge loss.
Agreed. This is also coming from a guy who very early on Buie and who’s favorite NU player to watch of all time is Brooks. I think Tre can end up better than them. Not saying he 100% will be, but the frame, talent, and skill all point to that. I think the staff also like his upside given they tried to retain him.

If he was likely to be better than the #44 NBA pick, they should have given him pretty much anything he wanted because he would have been the best player NU ever had.

He will likely be different than those three. Their game tended to have a lot of guard type play mixed in (Barney and Martinelli as Buie it was his base) where Singleton seems less oriented that way. Hard to know if his game will be judged the same way,

If he is better than Barnhizer, then he should be drafted earlier than #44. That would make him the best player we ever had. I just don't think he is that.

I think he's a good player who would have played a role for us similar to Horace Grant's role on the great Bull's teams. A very good player who did things that someone on a good team must do but, as Grant found out when he moved on, he wasn't the reason the Bulls won.

NBA draft/performance does not equal college success. Buie had a better college career than Brooks imo. Brooks is a better pro prospect. Nance got more run in the NBA than Buie as well. Pat Spencer was not a better PG than Boo. All those guys have had more time in the NBA than Buie.

I keep noticing that the Thunder's point guard is as big as Brooks (and about 40 pounds lighter). 6'6" just isn't that big in the NBA.

It’s not even that big in the big ten. I’m shocked when I see the size of some guards. The league and game are evolving fast

Sure it is. It's a basketball team. Every successful basketball team has guys who fill different roles. It's half of what this board goes back and forth on. Whether its NU football or the Kansas City Chiefs, the quarterback better get the ball out and the linebackers better tackle.

Tre might well have been the leading scorer for us next year and I also don't think next year's team was going to make the tournament, in part because he wasn't going to fill Mart's role.

Or…. If they still had Tre then they have the ability to try and land someone who could fill Mart’s role.

Replacing Mart is hard, but doable if you have some good pieces around them. But now they have to replace Mart and basically everyone of any real consequence around him. That’s darn near impossible.
