Who was Dochterman talking about?

I found this snippet from Scott Dochterman in this week’s Legends & Listeners podcast to be interesting. He was talking about McCollum as Iowa’s coach, when he said this:
“You've got a coach that doesn't complain about the portal. And doesn't complain about, you know, NIL and doesn't embellish. It doesn't sit in front of a group of people at the PCA meeting and say, it's going to cost $500,000 to retain a player.
When really, in fact, it would have been two. They had the money for it and he chose not to retain them. But he told everybody they didn't have the money for it because that's the kind of person he is.”
Who is the player Doc is referring to? Tony Perkins, maybe? I suppose he may not be referencing Fran with this comment, but that was the implication I got.

Thoughts?

I remember Fran saying he wasn't paying freshmen or portal players more than existing players on the team. I guess he didn't want his boys NIL going down.

Was Tony Perkins worth $200,000 in 2024?

His playing time (31 to 23 min) and PPG (14.0 to 8.7) went down while at Missouri.

Still can't believe we are having these discussions on what a player should be paid. ;)

Can someone smarter than me explain what it means?

Taking a stab here...

The post is saying that Fran went and demanded more money from the PCA meeting (president's meeting on athletics) saying that he needed 500,000 in order to keep Perkins.

Then, it was discovered two things were not true. 1- he had more than enough money to keep Perkins and let him walk anyway but told everyone he couldn't get a deal done due to finances.
2- he lied about how much he was demanding and "only" got 200k from Mizzou instead of $500,000.

Well then... We should have fired Fran for CAUSE!!!

Checks out.

If there is a silver lining, Barta’s incompetence, which stretched the Fran era out about 3-4 years longer than it should have been, allowed for Iowa to be in the right position to land Ben McCollum—a coach who could prove to be one of those once-in-a generation hires who, unlike Lute Olsen, who left for warmer weather, might actually make a long career for himself at Iowa.

Time will tell.

Fran hated NIL. I'm going to guess he threw out 500k hoping it wouldn't be met just to give himself another reason to complain.

I hope you are right. I'm concerned about our NIL lacking compared to others and that has always been my concern if BM started out on fire like he did. As I have thought about it more, BM is smart enough(that even if a dream job opened up -Duke, Kentucky, etc) I feel he would not jump for a bit. This NIL/transfer/portal rules need to get ironed out in some form and he knows this. I am like you holding out hope that we can have him for the duration and possibly have a tremendous run these next few decades.

Sadly almost everyone was in favor of NIL. I remember Jon Miller saying it was a great thing at the time and was a big fan of it. How people didn't see how bad this would get is beyond me. It never was just going to be Name Image Likeness. Pay To Play and Hired Gun is what it is.

Completely stupid and I was against it from Day 1. There is no way to regulate this without players becoming employees of the school.

Does Dochterman know for sure it was $200k at the outset, rather than basing it on what Perkins actually received at Mizzou? Not saying he's wrong, but people often start negotiations at a higher amount. Did Perkins start out asking for $500k and then settled for $200k?

It should, hopefully be fixed by August. NIL, Portal, the cheating from coaches, and players over 24/25. 👍

Unfortunately that’s the world we’re in. Fran did hate it but you have to adapt. I’ll bet Kirk didn’t like it either but he’s adapted. He probably gave the extra money to his kids. So happy we have one of the best coaches in America! I’d be happy if there was never another post about Fran in this site!

It better be very soon or this entire college sports money grab will drive fans away monetarily and fandom IMHO. Now, it is absurd.
Sounds like their may be a salary cap. It would be great if schools can go back to getting recruits based on their culture, quality of their education, ability to win championships rather than the size of their pocket book.

The greedy NCAA would not let student athletes get a stipend or full cost of attendance. Only schools, conferences and NCAA could profit from athletics. That lead to this disaster.

I think the NCAA rightly new that if they cracked the door slightly to allow some forms of direct pay to athletes, it would only be a matter of time before that door was kicked wide open into a pay-for-play free-for-all.

They were right.

My understanding there will not be a salary cap until there is a CBA. And to have that the players need to be employees of the school. And that is not going to happen right now.

It's always about greed and the American more more more for me attitude. It started out with kids couldn't afford dates. They got a few thousand a semester deposited in their accounts. Then they were starving and couldn't eat so they were given cards that gave them free food at local establishments. This on top of other perks that people don't even know that D1 kids get. Now they're millionaires. It still isn't enough money for some of them. Again, it's gross to me.

It hasn't happened yet. I thought there would be more people like me who would stop going to games or barely watch. I truly have barely watched men's basketball since Garza. Family had season tickets to Iowa Football since 1971. Dropped them when NIL kicked in.

Eh, there were many people who recognized the perils of opening the NIL Pandora's box, myself being one of them. Yes, there were also many that were strongly in favor of it too.

But it was nowhere near "almost everyone" in favor.

Fran exaggerated the price to justify what he gave his kids.

They started paying players a stipend of up to 2500/ month several years ago. So 30k on top of everything paid ...basically date nite money.

Are they still getting that 30k now?

If they had made it 100k would we still be where we are?
Yes. The scotus decision broke college sports

I don't remember what the amount is for the food allowance, but it is enough that they have trouble spending it all every day.

You are remembering wrong. Don't confuse fans that were encouraging others to play the game with meaning they support it. Many of us knew that if Iowa didn't get on board ASAP with the current rules we would be left in the dust.

What about the schools themselves and media companies? They all sweet and innocent and not greedy?
