In my effort to get to know Penn State, I really enjoy history, and which player would you say best represents Penn State. For instance, at Mississippi State, I would say Nick Fitzgerald, not recruited very high at all, but hard working and tough as nails. That sort of embodies who Mississippi State is. What about Penn State?

John Cappelletti

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen was to give a benediction after John's moving Heisman acceptance speech, but he chose to forgo it, saying instead: "Tonight you have heard a speech from the heart, rather than from the lips . . . I was supposed to pronounce the blessing, but you don't need a blessing tonight. God has blessed you in the person of John Cappelletti."

And Penn State has been blessed to count John among it's most honorable alums.

John Urschel. After retiring from the NFL in 2017 John finished his PhD at MIT in 2021 and is now an Assistant Professor at MIT focusing on spectral graph theory and numerical linear algebra. He is a bestselling author and continues to conduct research in applied mathematics. Class act, excellent football player and even better intellectual

Right now, Saquon Barkley because everyone knows who he is. Many of the past greats mentioned on here aren’t remembered by anyone outside of Penn State people. Todd Blackledge is a close second due to his broadcast work.

MRob also, He’s on major network TV and gets plenty of airtime. LaVar has a morning radio show on XM.

Michael Robinson is always first in my thoughts. He was a football player. He played WR, RB and QB for PSU and he took us out of our darkest period and brought us back to life in 2005. I also believe he got his Master's while playing at PSU. His excellence on and off the field, his unselfishness and his love and loyalty for the University is why I put MRob first!

Penn Staters are to be measured by the phrase "Success with Honor" which was the measuring stick for all Penn Staters since JoePa walked the sidelines. A Penn Stater should be someone that makes us proud both on and off the field. You will come to find that we believe in the original mission of college athletics moreso than many major schools and charity is a huge mission as well. THON, a student run philanthropy raises tens of millions of dollars each year for pediatric cancer support and research.

I love MRob, but I’m not sure too many people know him or realize he went to Penn State. Lavar is great also, but a lot of people outside of Penn State didn’t like him as a player and considered him a bust at the NFL level. Saquon was the best player on a team that won the SB…I don’t think any other PSU player brings that to the table.

Franco, Blackledge, Ham, Poz, LaVar , Micheal Robinson, Sean Lee, Mike Mauti, and on and on that is why We Are. I am sure I missed a bunch. Not for just what they have done on the field but how they continue to represent the University through their lives.

As a fellow early-40 year old,

Paul Posluszny: i can't think of a better picture to embody LBU
poz.jpg

LAvar Arrington: Best quote of this video - "Bellisari is gonna decide he'd rather run down on kickoffs than play QB for Ohio State"

plus, how freaking intimidating is this....

Finally

Mike Mauti/Mike Zordich: Legacy players (you'll find a lot of those here), and i personally believe them and a handfull of other players (Adam Brenneman, Christian Hackenberg) along with Bill O'brien led the charge that kept the program intact after the Sandusky stuff. Lost in that, is the TOTAL of 49 players that stayed in the program instead of transferring out. FORTY NINE! Epitome of the grand experiment (look it up). I won't repost the video posted above (suggest you watch it), but this picture will forever be burned into my memory as THE critical juncture in the program.

Thanks Joe for all these wonderful men that you mentored. JoePa lives on.
