Fess up folks! Which one of you mustachioed masterminds is behind this? What was the fourth work that you left behind?

Wasn’t me.

There are a lot of small art museums in the south of Germany and in northern Italy, easier pickings than, say, Munich or Florence. Those paintings are gone.

Google the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum theft.

The Weis family (Weis Markets) auctioned off the collection of Robert & Patricia Weis last fall. The top 18 pieces fetched $218 million. Most of it was kept in their rather unassuming but large ranch style house in Sunbury. I worked in their architecture department when I was a student and got to see some of it when I dropped documents off at their house a few times. If I remember correctly, the Rothko was in the entryway, the Matisse was above the sofa in the living room and the Picasso was near the piano. Robert was 2nd in command when I worked there and he had some interesting pieces in his office. He had a modern/contemporary painting of Romulus & Remus suckling on the she-wolf that was equally mesmerizing and freakish hanging behind his desk. It made it hard to focus on the task at hand when you would meet with him.

Thefts from small French museums started a couple of years ago. The WSJ had a great article on the trend a year ago.

Round up the unusual suspects.
