I think after all these years that Freshmen studs do not win championships. You said it yourself: look at the talent that Duke and Cal wasted. In a single elimination tournament you cannot rely on a freshman led offense. No coach will do any better with this system. However, getting good college players to stick around if you constantly recruit over them will not work either with the portal. The bench coaching is of lesser import but I agree the harnessing of a smoothly functioning offense ought to be grounds for firing. Cal drove me crazy with this as well. When we won in 2012 we had a generational talent in AD, but we didn’t depend on him for offense. We had Lamb, Jones and Miller, some of whom had deep tournament experience. The NBA lock out abetted that roster construction and helped win the title. I personally am unsure of Pope’s futur but I lean towards it being short. I do give him some slack because of injuries. To think that your starting point would suffer a dislocated shoulder in two consecutive years—what are the damn odds?
