In this table and in the paragraphs that follow, I would want to see the figures as % of all matches instead of % of decisions.

I did not do that because it fails to separate the two effects; takedown inflation and tactical adjustments caused by takedown inflation.

But if you do use all matches in the denominator you get similar results from a magnitude perspective. Zero or 1 TD matches were 11.8% of all matches in 2022-2023 and 35.9% in 2024-2026.

Maybe it’s just me and the majority of my viewing being OSU, but obviously we’re shooting more but I also feel the defense today is just better.

The scrambling ability of today's wrestlers is light years ahead of where it used to be
And another reason you shouldn't have to hold a guy down for 2 seconds to get a takedown. We need clear definition of what reaction time is it can't be refs judgement because we see one ref and a 1/2 second of control is 3 and another ref it has to be 2 seconds

Who has mastered the 3-Point Takedown?

Vince Robinson is 7-0 in the past two tournaments in 0 or 1 takedown matches. He has a pair of 4-2 wins, a pair of 4-1 wins, a 5-1 win, a 3-2 win and a 2-1 win. That is the most such wins by any wrestler in the three years of 3-point TD - and he only needed two of the years to do it. Honorable Mention to Patrick Kennedy (6-0).

Wrestlers with the most (8) 0 or 1 TD matches are Caleb Smith (6-2), Stephen Little (5-3) and Ben Kueter (4-4).

And who needs to consider a second takedown?

Most high volume, low scorers do well with the strategy though there are four wrestlers who may want to consider a second takedown. There are the wrestlers who have 7 such matches with a losing record (all are 3-4): Joey Blaze, Stevo Poulin, Evan Frost, and Mac Stout.

There are three wrestlers with a 1-4 record: Dayton Pitzer, Cam Steed, and Dean Peterson.

Nine wrestlers are 1-3.
Forty-three wrestlers are 0-2, 0-3, or 0-4.

I'll take a guy who goes and gets a takedown and then sits on a lead (VRob) over a guy who stalls from the first whistle with the intent of going to rideouts (Ventresca).
