I think you’re overestimating the strictness against the average Joe. In my business we see people with multiple DUI’s still driving all the time.
Story in Michigan ....
My neighbor's 55ish bf got his 2nd or 3rd DUI a couple years ago. Any vehicle registered in his name had a breathalyzer tied into the ignition. So he put his Escalade in his gf's name.
One night I get a text from my neigbor, asking if I have time to drive about 20 minutes away, where the bf was in a bar. So I drove her over there and she took 'her' car (she didn't want the liability anymore).
Long story, but she wouldn't give him the car back until he put it in his name and had the breathalyzer/ignition installed.
(I never did ask what he did when he walked out of the bar and his Escalade was gone).

It's pretty simple. If you're going to drive drunk or high on pills, you better drive real good. Some just can't, yet think they can.

It's even simpler ... if you're drunk or high on pills, you better not drive. And if you think you can "drive real good [sic]" while drunk or high on pills, you're even more dangerous than your run of the mill POS drunkard/crackbaby.

And, it's even simpler still than that ... if you've had alcohol or taken pills, and think you're not drunk or high, you better not drive.

I agree, but there are outliers. Guys that do it every day, or every weekend. Not condoning it at all, but they're better than texters and NY/NJ impatient snowbirds sometimes. IOW I don't really care what is in your body or your system, I care how you drive.

John Daly could probably drive a party bus home from Hooters at 2am. That doesn't make him a hero, but he didn't hit anything. He didn't cause any damage or injury to anyone else. It's still a crime, but he's obviously a better driver than Tiger (heh).

And, again, this is the problem. Just about everybody in some state of inebriation who drives thinks they're fine to drive ... either because they think they're not drunk/high, or because they think they're the ones that are "good at it." It's your line of thinking that IS the major problem (outside of the more generalized problem of people not being about to handle themselves around the poison that is booze and pills). There are very few people callous enough to think to themselves "I'm completely out of my mind on drugs/booze, and I really suck at driving like this ... death to myself and others, here I come ... but let's do this" ... instead, it's filled with "I'm the exception ... I'm not drunk, and even if I was, I'm fine to drive, not like these other idiots who can't be as awesome as me."

Bad driving doesn't have to involve alcohol or pills.

No one ever implied that was the case ... there are plenty of sober drivers who are awful drivers.

But, all driving involving being high or drunk IS "bad driving."
Agreed. Are you done arguing, or would you like to see John Cleese down the hall?

I was just going to post this myself. Shep, where have you been for the last 20 years? The 'average Joe', multiple DUI arrested drunk is still out there driving along with the rest of us.
I stand corrected. Whenever a friend says to me I'm afraid to fly, I typically say "you are at more risk driving to or from the airport".

I say this because that's the speed limit and it is enforced. I also say this because this drive should be the most tranquil, peaceful, beautiful drive you could imagine (because it really is - in real life). And Tiger turns it into some unbearable burden like Miami 5pm traffic. He's not right in the head.

This is how the drive starts from Bridge Rd. onto the northern end of Jup Island:

I drive as slow as I can until I hear a horn when I'm driving through here. This is a few miles north of where he flipped.

This island truly makes Palm Beach look like pikers. It's that special. Not a store or a place of business on the island other than a small marina at the south end.
Don’t Tiger wreck last time in a low speed limit area?

Not nearly as much of a reason to these days with Uber and Lyft available. First thing I did when both my kids went to college was have them get the uber app and put in my credit card…I told them there would be no questions asked when they used it. Fortunately neither of my kids were big partiers like their father.

I think that was in Cali. Swervy roads and again, way too fast. His other incident - when he was passed out in his car in Abacoa in Jupiter in the middle of the night was local.

Never liked Tiger; has proven to be a selfish POS over and over again. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Roid head too.

As long as it's clear that all drunk/high driving is bad driving, and those who are "good at it" aren't "good at it" ... yeah, we're all set. No argument here.

It's a selfish thing for me. If myself or someone I love is on a 2 lane rural road in PA at 11pm, that pickup coming the other way better drive good. I'm counting on him - drunk or sober.

Like most here, I've never had a DUI. Probably deserved a few though. I think the high recidivism rate with DUI's must be an interesting study.
There were times I definitely would have ended up in jail had I been pulled over. Shameful.

I don't think that reaches the level of any sort of shame Jim. You got home and in the morning probably thought about things and said to yourself - "Maybe I ought not to do that anymore".

Sure, there's been talk of deadly driving, but I think we can all agree that the worst repeat offense on this thread is the misuse of the word "good." It's "better drive well," not "better drive good." Hearing someone say "better drive good" is liable to cause someone to drive into oncoming traffic from the shock to their literate system.

In college, I lived in an off campus apartment ... I drove myself and the live-in girlfriend to another off-campus apartment for a NYE party. I got drunk. Drunkity drunk. Wasn't planning on it, still not sure how I ended up drinking that much, but it happened. I remember chugging from a magnum of champagne, long after I was already inebriated (but don't remember much else re the actual drinking). Then I thought we were sleeping over ... would crash there until I had sobered up, but, I think they had parents visiting the next day or something, so we were all told we had to go. It's the only time I had said to myself "this is a horrible idea" before driving ... I think the things that saved me were it was a short drive, and it was on a route I had driven just about every day, without many turns and without much speed involved. So I could probably drive it in my sleep, which is practically what I did. After getting out of that car, I never drove anywhere drunk again, and if I had even a drink at dinner, I always waited extra time before getting behind the wheel to try to help even that little bit of alcohol clear somewhat from the system before driving. I used up all my extra lives getting home that night.

Way back in 1969 I was working in Annapolis, MD. On a Saturday night I decided to drive up to see a Bullets-Pistons game, but found it sold out. Well, rather than waste the trip I found a bar across the street and proceeded to drink National Bohs until the game was over, at least. Well, I sort of got lost on the way back, pulled over on the interstate to look at a paper map. After a while a state cop pulled behind me and told me I was on the right road! Nothing more!

Rolling over a car on that road is near impossible. Anyone driving faster than 30 MPH anywhere on that island is an idiot.
Saw somewhere on TV last night that he tried to pass a pickup towing a trailer with power washing equipment on it. Clipped the backend of the trailer with the Range Rover wheels causing him to roll onto his side. Climbed out the passenger side door which was now the top side. Dude needs some serious help but betting he won’t get it.

Besides typical college age shenanigans, I was never a heavy drinker and probably have averaged about 3-4 drinks a month in the last 20 years. If I had to stop forever, it wouldn’t be particularly tough. College was not a problem as I was in a city and didn’t need a car - just stumbled home or took a cab.
That said, there were a few times in college during the summer when I was home that I drove very tipsy to get home from a friend’s house party. We would have a group of 20-30 people at his house after our summer soccer league games. He lived about 2 miles from me and I drove slowly on dark, windy, suburban roads with almost no traffic at night to get home - worried mostly about hitting a tree. Anyway, I sometimes have a dream that recurs where I’m driving in the dark down one of the roads with extreme tunnel vision due to being drunk - leaning forward over the wheel hoping to focus better. Just crawling along to get home. Scares the hell out of me

The best Tiger story is when he was cosplaying as a SEAL - “training” with them and actually saying he would have probably been Special Forces if it wasn’t for golf.

And then, after one training session - after the SEAL team had humored him - stiffing them at lunch. Cheap delusional ****
