I realize this isn't the same thing for many reasons: while in HS, I volunteered a few times at the Selinsgrove Center. It's a residence for those with severe mental/emotional/intellectual disabilities, too severe for the families to care for them. Some wore helmets at all times for their own protection. That was difficult, and I only was there for 1-2 hrs at a time, a few times. My significant other Is a BCBA she's been working in the field for over 30 years . She worked with Dr Lovaas at the beginning. She's had articles written about her in the NY times and many other publications. Being around wrestling and coaching forever I enjoy helping people. Many autistic boys need male therapists because the dads are usually hands off or not sure how to handle it. The work is so rewarding and will put a smile on your face daily.
That's an extreme case, but point being: some people need help in ways that we can't comprehend without seeing first-hand. And even for less severe instances, not everybody can provide that help. The world is a better place for those who can and do.
