I think there’s more to it than that. He refused to put his best lineups on the floor. Did it two seasons in a row.
I can’t help but wonder if he was trying to get fired. He didn’t want to be here anymore but he wanted that buyout. He also wants us to think it’s all Mitch’s fault. And Mitch bares a lot of blame. But Cal played his part too.
Whats worse now is Cal has to be burning up inside about leaving nearly 30 million dollars on the table because he screwed up talking to arkansas. That’s probably part of his new found motivation. Pissed at Barnhardt for fleecing him out of 30 million(that part is his own fault but you know he won’t admit it to himself).

IDK if you got the message but Eli capilouto put out a video saying we are in massive debt. We are likely to hire a second Mormon. Popes boss. The thing about Mormons is they take care of each other and that guy isn’t gonna fire pope. Ever. The greatest shock that could ever happen isn’t changing things. The only hope is Barney stays retired (I have a feeling he will renig on retirement)and the president recuses himself from the next hire or steps down. If there are all these incredible financial deficits the president should be let go asap. Athletics isn’t athletics anymore. We haven’t had a sports guy as AD in a long time. And the bs of Eli coming out wagging his finger about being in debt. The basketballl program didn’t put us in debt. Barney did it and Eli should fire him and should quit on his own. Under the current conditions and people are pretty resigned to Marc hill as the next AD so we are stuck with the worst coach in our history.
You make some good points. But again ... there's absolutely nothing in Pope's track record that suggests he can - if given time - build this to where it needs to be. That's what's got people losing their minds. Not pining for Cal.
The only thing Pope has in his favor, in terms of coaching record, is some nice wins both in his one season in the Big 12 and his 2 years at KY. But there's so many other things in the negative column, that point towards the conclusion that he won't be able to get there, no matter how much time he's given.

Cal will never coach at UK again. He’s happier than he’s been in 10 years.

Pope was the total opposite of the needed uk coach.
He has no swagger, no recruiting skills and questionable coaching skills.
Uk needed a home run hire and got a strike out.

Tyler Ulis?! Loved him as a player, wish we had 5 of him right now. Former beloved player…we got that and folks are having a meltdown barely two years in.
If that was the choice, keep Cal or hire Pope, then 80% is probably right two years ago. Today it's probably 99%.
But those weren't the only choices. Nor should it be. If UK did true search with an open job they would have turn qualified coaches away.
I'm still holding out hope that Pope has coached his last game at UK. But if he's back we are looking at a mid season firing next year. Who might be on the market then?
6 FF's. Took UMass the FF!! UMass!! Everywhere he's coached he's taken that school to the FF. And he might take Ark there? Cal is a great coach. The players first thing was his undoing here. UK deserves and needs a program first coach. But that can't the only thing they bring to table.

Cals beaten one team with a pulse in Arkansas little run they’re having. He’s back! If you’re a Cal fan as many of you seem to be, you may want to prepare yourself for some disappointment tomorrow night.
There is no payback. Mitch already made sure that Cal would win the breakup by downgrading as much as possible. He's still in the tournament and thanks to Mitch we are sitting at home talking about him.

I wanted Cal gone…but would’ve very much wanted to keep him had I known Pope was the replacement.
With less money and with Hart leaving and likely Brooks, I’m pretty confident that next year’s team will be his least talented team since he’s been here, especially if he replaces those coaches with chumps from BYU.
Not like it matters, Pope will never finish better than 5th in the SEC, regardless of talent. And to me getting to the Sweet 16 isn’t good enough for boosters if we’re middle-of-the-pack in the SEC. That’s not acceptable at Kentucky.
I’ll be even more unbearable to the Pope cult if Cal goes to the Final Four. I’ll drive it in their faces any chance I can get.
It would not bother me if he won the championship and then in the post game press conference i hope Cal tells Pope, "That is real progress"
Arkansas winning would not bother me in a vacuum but bad takes like this make me more inclined to hope Arizona wins by 40. Arkansas shouldn’t affect us at all — Cal is gone and isn’t coming back. But man the Calipari pumping within our own fanbase is getting to be too much. Go Arizona!
The guy took 3 schools to the final four and working on the 4th. One of those schools was only relevant under Cal. He is in the basketball Hall of Fame. And you think he can not coach. Now that might be the biggest bag of sour grapes ever!!!
If we have a year that is average (by our standards) next season then it’ll be a worse case scenario for UK. A 20 win season and a sweet sixteen birth will still suck because most of us will know in our guts that is likely this coach’s ceiling and want a change. We’ll be labeled as the fans who are unrealistic and never satisfied.
We need another bumpy year and early exit but I cannot hope for it either. Just an awful spot for Kentucky Basketball.
He has over achieved lowered expectations. It makes sense he should be happy.
