Mitch is the one to blame. He screwed Mark and just created future hate for the dude simply because he was lazy, knew he was on the way out, and wanted an easy hire; and one that he knew would do whatever he asked for however long they were both here together.

This is the crux of our issue. Mitch didn’t conduct a proper search. He called his good buddy in Waco who said no. He half-a$$ed offered the big hot name in Hurley. He then offered a former player with a career 65% winning percentage because he knew that guy would say yes.

I hope this does not apply to the Mark Pope situation, but it might: The phrase "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" is a popular idiom highlighting the need for change to achieve new outcomes.

Pope was not who would have hired but I didnt have a vote. We did hire him and as I had long feared Calapari left the program in chaos with zero players on roster. Pope did a great job cobbling together a competative roster on short notice and given the injuries he did about as good as he could that year IMO. This year was supposed to be different, roster he wanted a couple of 5 star recruits and a ton of optimism. In truth we only had 1 season ending injury, Lowe, I don't count JQ because he was injured before he got here a coach Pope KNEW.this going in.

This season we had more losses finished worse in SEC and didnt advance
as far in NCAA. Even worse IMO we
currently do not have a single top 150 recruits signed. HOW DOES THAT
HAPPEN AT A PLACE LIKE UK. That's a
real problem and it is solely on coach. His
analytics dependence and his insistence
on using it to mandate substitution
patterns is troubling. His teams
propensity to have blow out losses is a
problem. I support Pope in so far as he is UKs coach next year, but if he doesn't make some major changes next year will be his last year iMO
Agree.

this is a weird situation for me

I was on Tubby has to go bandwagon somewhere around 2001, on the Gillispie has to go right after he lost to Miami at Rupp, and was on the Cal has to go, well, I don't remember when but it was probably around the time he started saying he was willing to lose games in order to get a player ready for the end of the season (Diallo - NBA ready), so 2018'ish I'm guessing. My point is, when things aren't working with a coach, I as a fan don't give much leash.

But I'm not there on Pope and I really don't have a good reason other than I think 2 years isn't enough when the coach makes it to the tourney both years and there are not off the court issues. Pope is struggling but what I think happened is he just totally whiffed on the portal recruits this year, was way over his skis on how to deal with the NIL and while I have no knowledge of this, a reasonable explanation about his substitution patterns may be tied to promises of minutes in order to ink some of these players. And that major mistake killed his season. He was trying to force a square peg into a round hole. FWIW, I also dont believe JQ was ever going to be a difference maker because we need balanced players on offense/defense, not defensive specialists.

so I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do next year, and I don't really worry about recruiting....yet. I've never been excited about landing a freshmen, in every class there are only 2-3 that really make a difference in a team and if Cal wasn't getting these kids after 2020, then I have little expectation that Pope will, especially when you can land a ready made experience team from the portal in about 3 weeks. Now if its July and we're still trying to figure out if we have enough players to play his offense, then I'll start barking a bit more.

Last season showed he can assemble a good team and could play well together. If we didn't lose jaxson Robinson, kerr kriisa, Lamont butler, I think we could have made it further last year. Those are additional points, assists, leadership that were lost.

This team just didn't gel well and no leadership on the floor. Pope deserved criticism for what he assembled. I think it was mistake getting 2 players who could not contribute right away. And I am referring to the 2 that are redshirt. That could've gone to another pg and sf. At kentucky, everyone should be ready to contribute no matter how big or small your role is. Unless you got injured and be able to medical redshirt. We no longer should gamble jq like situation ever again

Im little skeptical what just happened but im not going to completely ignore that pope did have success last season and didnt just forget how to coach.

Hopefully he will get the players this time fits his system better.
I would agree only if we didn't see players actually regress this year. If Pope cleans house then I will say there is evidence of him having success. Whoever is our defense coach needs to go. If that is Pope then he's gotta go. I've never seen players help defense from the other side of the floor. Mark Fox has to be fired. He's an issue I believe. Yes, he got us to sweet 16 first season. I'm happy with the first season. This big of a regression second season and basically a blank check for players? Not good. And no recruits so far. Also not good.

I was just thinking that people who get this wound up over a situation (coach Pope).......probably need to see a therapist.......

A bad season is 9-16 and not making the tournament.
Yes, at Fordham.

14 losses is a bad season at UK. In this era (NIL and Portal), that is a BAD season EVERY SINGLE YEAR. No matter the circumstance.

Only the people to prove an agenda against Cal give an eff about the COVID season. Saying that was a basketball season is about like saying Pope is a basketball coach. Neither are true.

All said by someone who wanted Cal gone at the end.
