Anyone else notice who's missing from the team photo? Depending on the angle of the photographer from the several versions of the same picture I've seen he's basically missing from all of them.

It may have already been cleared up, but in that shot, Cael is not visible; in other angles, he's in the back row behind Henckel. Here's the video

Would also add that the constant "ankle diving" is annoying. This seems to become more frequent the past 10 years but really just slows down matches. It never happens in freestyle because of exposure but zero penalties in folkstyle.
Totally agree. A defensive tactic to get a a stalemate.

UFF is here to bring you some maths. Do you like maths? UFF likes maths.

I apologize for not getting WrestleSim predictions out before the tournament. I had some important modeling to complete, yes I know, how could it be more important than the NCAA wrestling tournament??? Also, there wasn’t really a need for WrestleSim to estimate the champion. I ran 1000 realizations and PSU was at 100%. Then I ran 10,000 realizations and PSU was at 100%. Then I stopped and drank some beer.

I compared the actual results with the pre-tournament simulations and then calculated the percentile performance of the teams simulated. From high to low the results are shown below.

Stanford >99.9%
OkSt 99.5
Iowa 99.1
Nebraska 92.7
PSU 90.1
NCST 44.6
OhSt 24.5 (B10COY!)
ISU 10.3
Lehigh 6.8
VT 6.4 (Up and coming!)
Cornell <0.1 (Better call legal, FAST!)

Stanford had an incredible tournament mathematically and otherwise. Oklahoma State, Iowa, Nebraska, and PSU all had great tournaments. Numbers can sometimes fib a little bit, or at least it is important to understand context. For example, because Iowa’s projected total was fairly meager at 59.24, a couple of points can make a big difference. Being on the receiving end of 2 points for a medical forfeit boosted them from 91.8 to 99.1 percentile. On the other hand, they lost some points (most likely) from the medical forfeit of Ferrari. Call that a wash.

IT IS MUCH HARDER TO EXCEED YOUR POINT TOTAL SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN YOU ARE AT THE TOP.

Before you go anointing David Taylor (who I like) as the new Dahli Lama (Gunga Ga Lunga), some context is in order. Oklahoma State had a great tournament - UFF was impressed by Vega and Robideau. I had seen Jax destroy some good people so I wasn’t surprised by his result. Oklahoma State had some VERY good fortune that usually doesn’t all happen to one team.
  • Doucet (#7) gained about +7 points over expectations because of injuries and the way his bracket worked out. He beat 26, 10, 20, 18, and 4 (FFT) while losing to 2 and 3.
  • Merrill (#7) benefitted from the Elam injury and a likely 7th place finish to gain +12 points over expectation.
  • Ryder (#22) benefitted from a MFF in the blood round to gain +6.5 points over expectation.
You add these up and that is a whopping 25.5 points. Without it, Oklahoma State performed at the 77th percentile. Very good but not the second coming of anyone of significance.

Penn State bonus points finished 12th in the team race. Penn State’s performance is equivalent to having 12-13 wrestlers. The talk of Oklahoma State surpassing PSU is crazy!!! It isn’t like there are unlimited points. Your point gains must come from someone else’s losses. UFF’s expectation is the gap will once again be 50 points when the dust settles in 2027.

UFF

PS The Ferrari's accounted for 33% of all medical forfeits.

Nice idea but go one step further. Trim off the excess mat, similar to what Arkansas LR does. They'll stop going out of bounds soon enough.
Joe used to say that the best way to stop football concussions would be to remove helmets.

Likewise, someone once told me that the beat way to reduce speeding, DUIs, and car wrecks would be to add a spike in the steering wheel.

OKST also gained 8 team points on a garbage OT no takedown call.

So that's actually +33.5 pts above what they normally might have earned.

In the 165 final, was I wrong in thinking Mitch was hipping over that first headlock and may have stuck Mikey? Or would Caliendo have been able to roll him the whole way over?

I was thinking the same thing. You have to give Caliendo credit for trying a risky technique in the finals. Most guys wouldn’t have the guts to do that.

I’ll add to this by stealing the “good” from FS:
1. Have stalling tied to holding center, meaning retreating to the edge is an automatic call
2. Implement a shot clock if no action after 1:30 in the 1st
3. Eliminated OT and implement criteria
Just say no to criteria, I rather have them thumb wrestle. As for ot stand them up until it's over.

Special THANK YOU to Jeff Byers who saved me from having to listen to the ESPN clowns!!!
I do not have ESPN+ so I was able to follow the PSU wrestlers even when ESPN would cut to other bouts.
At one time during the tournament there were 3 PSU taking place. He did an amazing job of keeping me updated on all three...simply masterful & amazing!!!
Kind of late to mention this now, but Comcast Xfinity recently added the complete ESPN family of channels, including ESPN+ streaming service, at no additional charge on top of my cable bill. Not sure if anyone has Xfinity and wants to check it out.

I feel slightly like Iowa must have felt winning the NC with only Spencer as a champ, and we had 4.

We are blessed and it is not the same, but I never bounced back completely after Duke got totally screwed. I would like to know the credentials and allegiances of the mystery men in the back room that took a national championship away from PJ. Yes, he would have beat Taylor again.

I think a decade and a half of dominance has definitely inflicted the mind consciousness of the wrestling community. The benefit of the doubt is absolutely flowing in the other direction. The PSU tax is real!!!

The book seems to be out with how to wrestle the good guys as well. Retreat to the edge, don't shoot, try to avoid outright stalling and push matches to the 3rd , SV or TB and very good kids have a real shot at pulling one out on PSU. It bit PJ, SVN, and nearly Luke, and Levi - granted both Levi and Luke weren't overtly threatened, anything can happen in a 1 point match.

The antedote is power through and get that first takedown in the FIRST period. Not everyone can be Mitchell, but his style is how you counter the defensive wrestler. He knows he wins 60% of scrambles when he initiates, so just go do it. Take chances, often!

I think Marcus needs to get stronger, and MUCH more aggressive against elite competition. He streamsrolls kids at the next tier down, so it's in him, just not always. A RS is a good thing

Cael adjusts constantly, but I really hope that just go get it in the first becomes a much stronger focus, granted we already out-takedown the competition 10-1 otherwise. Our mat wrestling has some challenges to work on as well both riding and escaping - once again, particularly against the best.

Cael's montra is always getting better, and simply winning another and setting a record will not keep him satisfied. These are great times, but I have a hard time holding back the greed.
Robideau’s matches vs PJ then “Trelly” were like night and day. He wrestled by the new book vs PJ (steal it in SV) and aggressively from the get-go vs Antrel because he saw that worked for PJ in the B1Gs. Ok St plan for Robideau at NCAAs was executed perfectly.

Thank you so much for the heads up!

I noticed we had ESPN2 and ESPNU available again, so I was able to see all the sessions… but didn’t realize I could have had a V8 with the individual mat choices!

I went to Xfinity app, asked the chat bot how to access it, got a box to tap to get (a separate) Xfinity Stream app from App Store…perused it to see all the other live sports available at the moment… I hope to be good to go next year, and anything else that may be available on it!

The Sandusky garbage doesn't help. Even tho it had zero to do with any other sport they are all lumped in together. I realize the azzhats that spew this garbage are not true sane wrestling fans. It doesn't matter what PSU does it's always going to be there it's sad & ignorant. Consider the sources and the hate fans have for their program being dominated.
There was a dude sitting outside the arena, decked in tOSU gear, smoking a doobie after's Friday night's round, yelling about Ped State. I told him to F off. Wasn't quick enough to come back with Jim Jordan, Leslie Wexner or Dr. Richard Strauss.
