Goodman saying that UNC will most likely let Davis go

Davis led the Heels to the championship game four years ago. Two seasons ago, UNC won the ACC, got a 1-seed and Davis was named ACC Coach of the Year. A couple seasons later, and he's out the door. But UNC is right. Sometimes you can just see the writing on the wall, despite recent success.

UK will honor Pope's 3-year contract and then most assuredly fire him after next season. I wish they could see the writing on the wall and save themselves the trouble.

He has 4 years remaining from right now. It was a 5 year contract with one extension for getting to the Sweet 16 last year.

Exactly. Pope is clearly going to be fired. There’s no way around it. He can’t recruit, he’s got no success here. The ship has sailed, he’s bombing. UNC is showing how you look to trejectory and make a call based on all information. Imagine if Pope went to a title game in year 1, won the SEC, and got a Coach of the year award. 😳

You’d have some calling the fanbase insane for wanting him gone. They’d keep him 10 years based on that alone. There are some serious issues with this program both in fanbase and administration. Maintaining a blue blood means you flat out don’t accept this. Period.

Hilarious, he did better than Pope throughout the last two seasons, yet Pope gets his third year, we’re irrelevant.
Yeah, Pope had 3 more losses in those 2 seasons starting with zero players. But, Pope had 3 tournament wins to Davis wining zilch in the tournament. Oh wait, UNC won a play in game! LOL

Mitch lowering that bar. He knew Pope wasn’t going to kill it he saw his bad history when he hired him. Give the impression that a sweet 16 is success and flash that 96’r. And a bunch of people were absolutely going to bust out their Indiana “back to back sweet 16’s you can’t fire him” routine. It was coming you know it was lol.

Then proclaim he’s just getting started and rising even though he’s been coaching a long time and is not young lol.

The year after the NC game, UNC didn't play at all it in the post season. Then, they went to a S16 and then had 2 straight first round exits. That is 4 years of not living up to standards FWIW.

Well great. They will probably hire outside the family this time and it will probably be one of the coaches we’ve wanted. UNC will fix their mistake while we have possibly the worst season ever next year minus Covid.

I absolutely hate UNC but this is the correct move. Davis is a horrible coach. Even with all of our blowout loses the last two seasons losing to him at home is the most embarrassing to me.

The key to know whether you need to fire your coach is simple. Who would hire them? I don't see any P5 school hiring Davis. I don't see anyone hiring Pope if hes fired either.

Yeah, Hubert beat their arch rival in a final four, coach K's final game. Lost in a runner up game. And he's still likely to be let go. Why? Because first and second round losses are unacceptable at programs like UNC and UK. UNC fans on their boards are all in agreement. I was kinda shocked reading their 247 board. Nobody bringing up weird math to say, UNC isn't actually that elite, because they had a stretch here that they didn't do much, nobody going "NoRtH CarOLina stANDArDS", nobody saying he's a former player we cant do this, nobody saying he should be held onto because injuries, nobody saying he should be held onto because the runner up, and nobody trying to disparage the UNC program to prop him up. Just all in support that, that's not UNC basketball, and he needs to go, former player or not. It's kinda surreal the difference. Fans who want to protect the program's status vs a civil war of UK program fans and parasocial Pope fans on here.

Are we so sure that pope will be gone after next year if we continue the way we are?? If Hill gets the AD job, do you really think he’s going to let him go??? I can’t see Hill doing anything other than what Mitch tells him to do, guilt by association but I cannot see a reason to think Hill will not be Mitch’s puppet.

Exactly, just wanted to say great post! You summed it up perfectly. Sad I have zero hope in our administration to make the needed and bold move.

That’s over now besides a couple trolls. Even the die hard “patience “ posters or wait till the end of the year guys who defended him all year are done after yesterday. That’s how you know his days are numbered. If you get the group that still supported him after all the nonsense of this year, he’s done soon. There will be so much pressure next year.

Yep, you're right. Thanks for the clarification. Just looked it up. Davis also has four years left on his contract. And he's out.
UNC wouldn't have two buyouts to budget for. UK would have Stoops (35mil) and Pope (20mi), also, Capilouto recently said that the University has to tighten their budget.

Mitch had to hurry up and go to that sham seat. He wanted to be AD two more years, but even he recognized where this was headed. Mitch has done this long enough to see Mark can’t do this. Likely thought with the NIL he’d be able to buy recruits and the brand would elevate him. Well no, not a guy like Mark who’s got no success in 10 years and a bad record. So he probably said the NIL will handle recruiting for him, not realizing Mark has never been a good recruiter at all and it won’t help other than fielding a team who can make some tournaments.

He had to go on out because after this hire blows up even Mitch would have to be looked at for firing. The contracts, Gillispie, blocking Calipari and Pearl, Pope, Stoops, Joker etc. it’s as bad as an AD is going to get. You almost have to fire him.

It’s going to be very hard to Kentucky to hire one of his guys now. Mitch can’t be seen as involved, you’ve got so many eyes on this. We’ll see just how corrupt they are. Very corrupt or hot damn.

Yea some of these guys are just nuts. I’m not even understanding a lot of what they’re saying. Cherry picking to make UK sound average so they protect a bum head coach. Never seen that before.

Hubert has won around 33% of his quad 1 games.

UNC is 48-2 in the NCAA tournament when having 10+ point leads at halftime. Hubert is the guy who lost those 2 games.

UNC's 19 point blown lead on Thursday was the biggest blown lead in the history of the round of 64.

UNC's blown 15 point halftime lead in the 2022 championship game was the biggest blown halftime lead in championship game history.

With the game on the line Thursday, UNC was inbounding next to the UNC bench. Hubert allowed a 5 second call despite having a timeout to use. The resulting turnover allowed VCU to tie the game with only seconds left.

Several of Hubert's recruits have transferred out and made deeper NCAA tournament runs this season than UNC did.

He's a nice guy. He's not a good coach.

Big fat NO to Oats, Golden, Drew, and Pearl. Each has way too much baggage.

Too many good coaches out there with no baggage to settle for a slime all.

I'm guessing we'll hire TJ Otzelberger or Mike Malone.
That’s an interesting name with Mike Malone. I didn’t think about him. Any idea when you guys will make an official announcement on Hubert Davis?

People keep hinting it might come today but I don't know.

Mike Malone has been spending a lot of time in Chapel Hill watching his daughter play volleyball.

You ok with a former NBA coach as opposed to a college coach?
I mean, how many NBA championship winning coaches have ever even coached in college? He's analytics driven, plays a fun style, and would probably do a good job selling recruits on the NBA dream.

His first year in Denver was also the first season of some 2nd round pick from Serbia who was criticized for being fat and slow. Malone has to get some credit for developing Joker from the 8 points per game summer league player into the 3 time MVP.

He also was an assistant in college before leaving for the NBA.

There's no surefire options outside of Brad Stevens, and we know that isn't likely. I just don't want to hire some sleezeball. I think I'd be happy with Malone, Otzelberger, Lloyd, or Dusty May. Otz has the cheapest buyout. Malone doesn't have a buyout at all.

Mark Pope is Mitch Barnhart’s Middle Finger to all of BBN, as he exits stage left😆

Pope has kind of soured some UK fans on the 'He's analytics driven'. LOL!
