What was Cael referring to about "the rules"?

We’re a blessed program. We follow the rules. There’s not a lot of that going on right now. And that’s one of the reasons we can sleep when the wind blows. We train hard and do the right things to the best of our ability and things will work out.

Is this reference to steroids? HGH? One thing I noticed was how enormous so many kids were on Friday and Saturday night. Just humongous... McGowan looked much bigger than Luke, Jax and Seidel looked giant, Vega looked like a 165, Valencia much bigger than SVN, that kid Alvin from Columbia was HUGE, etc

Or is it a reference to something else?

My first thought was Forrest training with the Cowboy wrestling club before the rule change. But everyone knew it was happening, so if it was against the rules, I assume it would have been addressed. That said, I’ve read folks on HR write that Iowa’s refusal to let Bassett do what Okie State let Jax do was a big factor in his decommit.

When Forrest was still in high school, he trained freestyle with the Cowboy Wrestling Club RTC despite the rule at the time saying you had to train at an RTC that was within 250 miles of where you live (unless there wasn’t one). With Jax, of course, there was at least one (NLWC). Under the rules at the time, it perhaps could be argued that Jax was supposed to be doing his freestyle training in State College.

Folks on HR wrote that Tom/Terry told Bassett he could not train freestyle at Hawkeye Wrestling Club because of said rule. Same folks said it led to him decommitting.

Prospects can request a waiver from USA Wrestling for the 250-mi rule. Not sure if that happened in either case, but it's possible and I don't really see why USA Wrestling would reject it for someone at the Forrest/Bassett level.

Also the 250-mi rule officially is waived once a prospect signs an National Letter of Intent. (This is where our trusty hall monitor steps in and says NLIs no longer exist. Whatever.)

Iowa fans also claimed the Bassett family demanded transportation reimbursement for RTC training at Iowa, on top of their NIL. That reimbursement violates USA Wrestling RTC rules.

NIL for HS kids is a thing that $ can be paid that way . UsaW wouldn't return calls to other RTCs when they inquired about the situation. And then on Sept 1 they removed the 250 mile rule .

So you say it's waved when you sign something that doesn't exist anymore and hasn't since Oct 2024🤷. Nothing binds you to a University anymore until you attend a class. Jax talks in an interview in Dec 2022 about how he spent a few weeks in Stillwater training with Daton which helped him beat Luke at Powerade after losing at Ironman. He's been training in Stillwater for over 3 years

That can’t be true can it? He just left his high school early and walked into starting lineup.🙄

Predictable. In fact, I predicted it in the post you quoted.

Why don't you do something useful and post a link to the updated RTC rules? Anybody can snipe.

It can't be that because Cael skirted the gray area of all things RTC for a very long time. I don't think he would be talking about something Forrest could have got a waiver for before it was done away with all together.

Is he possibly suggesting that some schools are tampering (illegally contacting) with other schools’ rosters before wrestlers announce they are in the transfer portal? Football has a problem with third parties (agents or high school coaches) serving as the conduit rather than the schools themselves.

Thank you. BTW, my searches did not produce anything more recent than 2024. Googled "usa wrestling rtc criteria"

So if we are to take this document at face value, then the 250-mi radius no longer exists. Right? Because CTRL-F "250" = no result.

You might be interested to know that the HWC website references the 250-mi radius even though USA Wrestling does not. This came up in the search above.

The 250 mile rule was removed in September 2025 . That's the current one I posted

Yep hasn't been updated. Kids go all over now. Many HS kids do online classes and hit RTCs at a few places a month.

I will always help with stuff like that regardless of what people say about me providing the proper information is important

It is going to be portal season soon. And I am sure the tampering has begun. Perfect time to mention it.
His comments were definitely directed in 1 direction

Yep it's that time Iowa st already has 4 guys lined up. 3 from Stanford 165 Cardenas 174 Garvin 184 Norman 197 Novak . Perry and Carr stay working. And they're not "on staff" grey areas I guess.

They specifically removed it. I think most think in response to the Forrest / Bassett controversy.

So you are saying that Cael is talking about tamporing with wrestlers before the portal opens. Got it.

Not sure i would want to give up a Stanford education. Real woods was different. He already had graduated.

Garvin and Cardenas (at least) are 4th year JRs and maybe are graduating? If so, they might be leaving given how stringent Stanford is with grad school admissions and not giving any leeway to alumni.

Not that I want to see him leave Stanford, but Iowa City West HS grad Hunter Garvin spurning Iowa twice, the 2nd time for Iowa State when Iowa needs help at his weight, would be hilarious.

who would okie state actually be looking for in the portal? They're really stacked. A replacement for 174(facundo), 184(Ryder), 285 Doucet? Seems like they're pretty stacked with all 10 starters coming back

Facundo -- maybe? Or maybe they let Routledge compete with him?

Ryder -- doubt it, he made the podium after all of those shoulder dislocations. Maybe a 1-yr competition guy. They also have top recruit Michael White (#1 nationally at his weight) incoming.

Doucet -- the plan is probably to run out Ross as a true FR. Maybe they would try to get a 1-yr HWT rental, but I don't know who that would be -- see the list of HWTs in the thread about Mirasola. We can safely rule out bringing Carroll back. Otherwise maybe they'd be a little less picky than PSU?

The other place that might make sense is 133, if they think Forrest is gonna move up and they don't think either Raney can make the weight. They don't seem sold on Ramirez. Though maybe Zinkin is ready as a true FR.

I do see Ramirez as no place in the lineup. Okie state, welcome to Penn State's world.

Garvin is going 174 and even if he was 165 he wouldn't be going to Iowa and never was. His club coach Carew doesn't like Tom .

Maybe Amos so Ross can RS . Could RS Dee with Facundo 165 Ryder 174 and look for an184 or cut White down as true freshman

I should've said earlier: if they want to let Ross shirt, they might let Austin Johnson have a shot. He wouldn't be as good as, say, Amos, but might be a better option than a bunch of other heavies and already in house.
