Very successful, yet strange weekend. The bricks are killing the flow of matches plus felt like much more blood time, guess that’s harder to predict. The hate for PSU can be cut with a knife, not sure if it’s been this bad and I haven’t noticed but it runs from the fans to the media to the other athletes & coaches to even the refs allowing the gamesmanship. I hope we do see a push out point soon but the rest of these coaches know that would be bad for their strategy.

Cael:

“We’re a blessed program. We follow the rules. There’s not a lot of that going on right now. And that’s one of the reasons we can sleep when the wind blows. We train hard and do the right things to the best of our ability and things will work out.”

Does Cael have a passive-aggressive side that I never noticed? Is this a general statement, or a veiled reference to any particular program(s)?

Moved from vi:

Sunday morning thoughts…

this tourney had a little something for almost everybody —
- psu with record and 4 champs, 8 Aa’s in top 4
- oks with a couple champs
- ia exceeds expectations
- nebby on the team podium
-Stanford!
- ncaa gets its future rivalry
- both Fiats denied finals platforms

about the only ones empty handed were Osu.

and of course some soul searching is needed regarding officiating and incentives created by the current rule set.

The Sandusky garbage doesn't help. Even tho it had zero to do with any other sport they are all lumped in together. I realize the azzhats that spew this garbage are not true sane wrestling fans. It doesn't matter what PSU does it's always going to be there it's sad & ignorant. Consider the sources and the hate fans have for their program being dominated.

Imagine if all the haters used that negativity for positive purposes. Their own lives would be better. And their hating doesn't make me stop rooting for PSU.

I thought that was the most boring set of finals I have ever seen. They have to change the overtime to get more incentive to score during the match. Maybe get rid of the rideout, seems like alot of inferior wrestlers are stalling against a superior opponent just so they can get to the rideout for a better chance to win.

A lot of the 2025 finals were boring as well. Too many 4-1, 3-2 matchups where at least one guy is stalling his way to a last second shot to win.

How about instead of having five minutes of commercials after each match, we’re shown the actual podium with all of the All Americans on the stand. Wouldn’t take long, what, a minute? There’s nothing like having a group photo of All the wrestlers and schools represented who get to applaud one of their own becoming an all-American.

I think, besides jealousy, alot of dis-information is being spewed about the room. Libelous(sp) allegations being spewed about on the web especially with no counter to the above doesnt help. @tikk.

While doing some treadmill i brought up the Ncaa tournament with a young man wearing a local hs wrestling shirt thinking we might have some commonalities. He asked for my favorite at 197. I said Barr. He scoffed then agreed. I asked why the neg vibe. He said basically he hears things about "the room", i didnt want to get into it with him so i just said to not believe everything he hears.

Change the rule to stop the edge wrestling. Make it first step out a warning, after that it's a point every time. Wrestlers would use it as a scoring tactic, and it would force more inner mat engagement.
After 5 it's a disqualification.
Also crack down on head slapping. First is warning, and then same as above for points .No issue with head pressure but the slapping creates the space that allows guys not to wrestle.
If matches go OT,first point wins it. No time limit. Most matches would end in 2 minutes with step out rule in place .

My quick take. Overall very pleased with our results. I will leave it there. I am glad that we have a real up and coming rival. We needed some juice for next season. There could be several hungry lions looking for better results starting next October.
Rules need drastic overall for OT.
I wiil leave it at that till the fall. Next post will be in OT BBQ etc . Tripled the size of my garden and will be looking for other posters garden plans. Starting everything from seeds.

This could go a lot of ways.

It could be a defense of the Welsh transfer, where everyone knows Welsh reached out to PSU. Ryan has several times implied that Welsh was poached and has bragged about not going portaling -- never mind that he replaced Welsh with Fishback (NC State); and ignore his previous imports McKenna (Stanford), Orndorff (Utah Valley), Campbell (Pitt) among others.

It could be a veiled return volley at Iowa. Brands has been vocal over the years about doing things the right way, and it was often an obvious shot at PSU. Meanwhile he and Nicolls poached guys from other teams who weren't in the portal, including their swing at Lilledahl. Also Larry Lee, "I can get you a meeting with Tom but you need to enter the portal first."

Possibly also at OKST. I don't remember if Facundo and Steen were in the portal, but Taylor definitely contacted Ryder before any portal entry. (Not that this ultimately mattered, we got the best of the 4-team 184 trade.)

But just as likely it was a general factual statement. Cael is usually pretty direct when he wants to make a point.

Well Brands likes to put out that they do it right, subtly implying somebody they’re competing against doesn’t (otherwise why say it if everybody’s following the rules?).

Edit: okay I took too long to finish my response that el jefe got down first.

I believe he is referencing intentional stalling, passivity and "boundry wrestling" - all of which are illegal under the spirit of the rules and under the seminal sport that both Free and Folk were created from. I think he is implying that many coaches are teaching their wrestlers to intentionally stall as a means to shorten matches and a means to neutralize your opponents' superiority in Neutral and have the match determined in the bs stupid TB periods.

I loathe the rideout and won't shed a single tear if/when it's eliminated. Incentivized top stalling.

But the one finals match where it would've made the biggest difference was 141. Mendez was clearly better on top than Vega. And yet he took an ill-advised shot in OT that cost him the title.

I doubt many guys enter a match trying to win in rideouts. It's a high-risk strategy for a lot of reasons. But a lot of guys do try to bleed out the first 6:30 of the match, and are willing to risk going to rideouts as a result.

New rule - must have at least 1 TD to win.

The 125 and 184 finals were beyond boring and hurt wrestling.

If it’s 0-0, someone is getting hit with a stall in the first 1 minute. Automatic 1 point.

No more of this warning BS. The refs have already implored the wrestlers to engage.

if you run? Just like FS, you get hit, they stop the match and you go back to center. Run again? Hit again.

it’s simple stuff, but somehow the refs get away with choosing what rules they enforce. There is stalling in the rule book. And it doesn’t say it can only be called in the 3rd period AFTER you’ve verbally warned them 14 times.

I felt that way about many of the matches all weekend. Its nothing but a damn hand holding ballroom dancing contest. I see why people hate watching. Im beginning to agree with them. The referees, who are tasked with keeping a match going are complicit. Obviously their 100 calls for action every match arent being heard.

I shut off the finals. Sounds like I didnt miss much, aside from Mitchell.

While wrestling is more popular than ever, I wont pretend the product is in a good place. I agree with our visitor from Iowa (js). We have a referee crisis. They are killing the sport.
