But does he deserve a scholarship at a Big10 school? Would he be on scholorship if papa wasn’t the head coach? Legitimate questions.
It's less relevant than it used to be. The new rules limit you to 15 roster spots, and all 15 can have scholarships. There is no longer a place to add 3-5 walk-on players, on top of guys on scholarship. If a guy is on the roster, you might as well give him a scholarship.

The better question is whether or not young McCollum (or any coach's kid) deserves a roster spot.

Of course he would have had a roster spot with the Hawks and would have been a starter at some point.

Heard he’s improved as a spot up shooter…
and he’s killin’ it when driving

Would Connor have been permitted to be one of the worst two-way athletes at Iowa for as long as he was if Fran wasn’t his coach? Would Pmac have been permitted to even play any minutes his last couple years if his dad wasn’t the coach?
I trust Ben to play him only if he deserves it. Fran was willing to sacrifice the program for his sons. Big difference. Still can’t get that Oregon game out of my head from four years ago. 🤦‍♂️

I thought Connor was an excellent Hawk but had some basketball flaws as do almost any player that has ever played D1 college basketball.
Yea. He couldn’t score, shoot from three, create for others, defend, shoot free throws but he could sure throw entry passes into the post!

Connor needs to stay in Indy and become CC's agent. More money in that than coaching.

Jack needs to go play on his own and not under his father. While it was good for Connor, it was terrible for Patrick and for Fran. With Patrick having some issues, Fran was forced to keep his emotions under control. Fran needs to be Fran and Jack needs to be Jack. And I don't think that can happen by them being at the same college.

??????? How could that question be answered at this point? I mean really. Its quite possible he's closer to Sam Hoiberg then he is to John Lickliter. You know the kid that was probably the MVP of the conference team who made the biggest improvement this season. How many people thought Sam should be on a scholarship a couple of years ago? Did you watch Nebraska play this season and what he meant to the team?

Did Sam Hoiberg deserve a roster spot this season? Just asking....

I thought he was horrible in the games I watched.
Seriously. You must not have watched much. Price gets the ink and deservedly so, but if you took a poll from their team and fans about an MVP, I'd bet he'd be up their pretty high. He's a catalyst for them on BOTH sides of the ball. And frankly the point several posters said coaches kids don't deserve to be on scholarship. I'll leave it there......

How many players do you think want to just fill a seat from 11-15 when you most certainly aren't going to get off the bench very much if at all? Teams need those guys to have competitive practices. So "deserving" takes on a whole different tune.

Who was going to take his role that year when he was so effective with Garza and others? Being a primary ball handler, passer, and defensive player. And if you say the Kris Murray at that time you are immediately disqualified as you have zero basketball knowledge.

Well he started and was a helluva defender so yes. What’s your point here?

Read the post I responded too. The poster asked whether ANY D1 coaches kid deserved a scholarship. Too which I responded what about Sam Hoiberg. Lets be honest here. People still have a hang over from little Lick (which is stupid, it was 16 years ago for Christs sake), and to a lesser degree Frans kids. Even that is silly. Cmac had offers, and Pmac was a 4star I believe out of high school. You can complain about the way he used them, but they were certainly D1 worthy players.

For the record, I did not intend to suggest that any coach’s child did or did not deserve a roster spot. My primary goal was to shift the conversation from whether a player deserves a scholarship to the more relevant question of whether he belongs on the roster, which aligns more closely with the current rules. I concede that I might not have been entirely clear.

I've appreciated your takes on this topic.

I've watched quite a few games he played and I guarantee he missed more shots than he made and lost a couple games for them. I'll leave it there.

The post you responded too was "did Sam Hoiberg deserve a roster spot". So I assume your saying no? Is this based on how other players in the B1G missed shots and cost their teams games, or what, because he also had some very big games and was a catalyst for their aggressive play especially on defense. Frankly, I don't really care, and F--- Nebraska but saying he didn't' deserve a scholarship because he was Hoibergs kid is silly. That was the basis for this discussion after all..

Where else would he have played? If Nebraska wanted to waste a scholarship on him then that's fine with me.

Cam and Banks with some bonehead fouls. It’s going to be Al time I presume after this timeout.

Need to get Koch for a 3 ball; preferably in the corner this next few sets.

Didn't Sam start out with Sparty and Izzo? Sam's a baller and glue guy type of player. Every team needs one and every fanbase loves one.

I like Ben but am willing to bet he will never win a Big10 tournament championship.
That’s like saying Tim Lester isn’t as good a coordinator as Brian Ferentz because he will play in a Big Ten title game. 🤭
I’m also willing to bet Ben won’t have his starting backcourt outscored 63 to 0 in a tourney game as a two seed. 😊
