It appears that PennDOT has settled on its recommendation for completing the final link (or something like that). If all goes well, the earliest construction would begin is 2030, with completion estimated to be about 2035.

The price just keeps climbing. Eight miles, One Billion. Wow.
Outside of home games, how often does it get bad there?

50,000 people delayed an hour at a time, at a value of $50/hour, seven times a year, for 30 years =$525,000,000 for games @high end estimates of each.

It gets bad probably more often than you think. Parents weekends, move-in or move-out days, crashes, bad weather, graduation, Arts Fest.

This stretch of road was a bottleneck back in the 1980s when I was going to school. It was just one more gauntlet to run on 322 between Harrisburg and State College. It took them 50 years to come with a possible solution that will cost $1 billion. That's PennDOT for ya.

Let's have LionJim give us his calculations.

It’s bad year round… more and more people are traveling to HV and that’s a key artery. The trucks especially are flying. Numerous bad accidents annually. Ten years to fix it. Crazy.
Route 322 west of State College past Port Matilda also gets a lot more congested than one would expect. I've been through there on weekdays and there is quite a bit of truck traffic headed toward I-80. I heard there is a long-range concept of a plan to extend the four-lanes from west of Port Matilda to Woodland. If it ever happens, none of us will be around to see it.

The State College area has more going on outside of football weekends than many people realize.

Still the same Penn Dot - in the 1960's we called then the 'Never Sweats' as too many snooper-visors would stand around watching some workers actually do something. The longer those 'road engin-eers' wait and 'plan' the greater the cost and traffic, nerves, crashes continue to be worse. PA government has known since the '60's when I travelled from Philly to PSU and always debated on doing nothing and talking about it even less.

Typical PA not looking at the bonus of doing business in State College throughout the year.

It is a needed project. It is embarrassing to have so many inadequate major routes in the state. That should have been an expressway decades ago.

It’s not like PennDOT can spend the next year replacing a few thousand bridges in poor condition and widening several thousand miles of highway. That’s why they put bandaids on things and phase things over years and prioritize certain projects until funding is available.

Raise the gas tax? People complain. Delay projects until there is enough money? People complain.

Actually, that's pretty much every DoT - local, state and federal.

And as soon as there is a hiccup somewhere in the world that causes the cost of oil to go up, some state rep wants to suspend the bridge tax.

I’m so glad they did the interchange with 144 at Potters Mill first… that relieved the worst of the congestion heading south after big events.., no more alternating traffic with the people sneaking out “the back way” to get ahead of those of us waiting dutifully in line on the main road.

But, as much as I hate seeing farmland lost, I will be relieved to avoid the tension of the stretch of oncoming traffic!

That Y was a notoriously bad interchange. The Eutaw House was just beyond there for the ride up over the mountain. What is it now? Is it still there? The Eutaw House had a history.

Maybe they could add a toll booth or two.
