Just a general question. If a recruit such as Hutcherson were to email Cael or call him, is Cael allowed to respond at all? Even if it is "Hey, we can talk June 15."
Pretty sure Cael would have to reply back to an intermediary at the school -- Hutcherson's coach or a school official -- with the "NCAA says we can't talk until 6/15" message. Unless they're family members, that's also verboten.

But discussions with intermediaries (also including club coaches) are common across all sports. That's not much of a barrier.

All top recruits attend camps, so they interact with D1 coaches. Many have known D1 coaches for years before contacting is permissible. And coaches generally know what prospects will be at a camp. Scrupulous coaches keep this to coaching and benign topics like keep your grades up. Lane Kiffin OTOH ...

D1 coaches are also often world team coaches. Same concept.

Also, some top prospects are eligible to train at RTCs during the offseason. Hutcherson is one, and does train at NLWC (though not exclusively). Of course they interact inside Lorenzo, but Cael needs to keep it strictly coaching.

Thank you. Im sure the high school coaches know when their guys are allowed to be contacted. But who knows what kids might do on their own (like email a coach).

I'm sure coaches are used to being contacted by kids. And probably more by parents than by kids. The NCAA doesn't prohibit contact in that direction, or prohibit the families from getting mad when the coaches can't reply.

One more thing I should've said above: "recruiting without recruiting" is pretty common at camps. Sometimes it's just extra attention, without discussion recruiting topics. For example: maybe the top guys at football camp get golf cart rides back to the showers. And the head coach might drive the cart. Theoretically.

Hutch is a SO can't commit yet. He will follow Sidun and Brown to PSU I am all but positive
Not that I know anything, but sophomore 189, who was 172 as a freshman; have to think staying at 197 will be a stretch in a few years. What about Hazelett and Hoare?

Eventually you stop growing, just depends when.
Of course, hence why it may be beneficial for PSU to wait a bit. Unless they've decided - regardless of weight - that he's a better prospect than Hazelett and Hoare. Then again, the transfer portal makes this not that big of a deal.

Just looking at pictures of him with Brown; he's not as long, but definitely has some growth potential on that frame (and that frame may not be done growing).

Judging by what I’ve seen of Kendahl, he’s probably a future 197. His dad isn’t tall and I’m pretty sure his mom isn’t either.

You never know regarding the growth of teenage boys. I am one of those weirdos who was 6'1" ~200lbs. at 12...and is 6'1" 185lbs. at 45. Also, my parents are 5'8" and 5'6", while both my brothers are even taller than I am (6'3" ish). That being said, can't imagine there are very many high school sophomores who compete at 215 and then can go 197 in college. Similar deal with Hutcherson; kind of a wait and see as they both look like tweeners for now. Hazelett is the only sure thing HWY.

A woman I worked with brought her son into work one day when he was about 12. He was already 6’3” with size 13 feet and weighed about 140. He is Jarrett Allen of the Cleveland Cavaliers - 6’10”, 250 and telescopic arms. I told her then she was probably going to retire early given her family’s gene pool - she was also 6’3” and played college volleyball, husband played ball in Europe, nephew was a 1st rd pick by the Lions, sister was all American track star at UCLA. She was unsure. Jarrett just renegotiated his contract and is getting paid $36 million per year. His older brother is 7’ with no interest in sports. So yeah, you almost never know, but sometimes it stares you right in the face. Jarrett was the equivalent of a baby giraffe as a 12 year old

They actually determine your growth stage with a left hand xray. They did a couple before my daughter's scoliosis surgery. She was in stage 6 of 7 at the time. Stage 7 is mostly legs, because they werent worried about growth affecting her titanium rods attached to her spine.

Im sure the special treatment happens all the time in football. I cant imagine all the crap coaches do to land a recruit.

Id like to think wrestling recruiting is cleaner. Well, mostly.

This is one area where Brands can be creative and hustles.

When Zain won Cadet Worlds, TnT drove 13 hrs from Iowa City to Benton for the parade, just to be seen in Iowa gear, and then drove 13 hrs back. They could not contact Zain, but he got the message.

Didn't work out for them, but gotta applaud the effort.

Somehow that doesn't shock me. Just as goofy as them shoveling snow at the Bassett house.

Every wrestling club message board is melting down with the public vs private debate. Frankly it's not a debate: It's everyone in wrestling in Pennsylvania vs the families of private school wrestlers.

My stepfather is an assistant at one of the top high school programs in our state (one of his former players is likely a top-10 pick next month). My neighbor two houses down is the starting RT for the local university team (that barely missed the playoffs) and the placekicker lives around the corner. Do I have stories...Use of private jets and boats, free luxury car leases, 5-figure/month stipends for high school players who aren't technically committed anywhere yet. I'm in a small market, can't imagine what it's like being a blue-chip recruit in Texas, Georgia, California, etc.

I played D1 football, albeit 25yrs ago. It's not even the same sport today.

Thats insane. I used to follow football recruiting a little. But between the payments and portal, I just dont give a **** anymore.

I barely care to watch the games. I watch PSU if I can. And maybe if there is a good matchup ill watch. I watch FCS/D2 more and more.

I'm certain coaches avoid a paper and digital trail on correspondence to potential recruits when not allowed. But the verbal interaction is probably the go to contact when wrestler is in the venue or an event. Probably done vaguely without specific details such as scholarship and NIL money .

I don’t know how true this is, but I heard that Hutcherson is around 182-184lb and chose not to cut this season down to 172lb. He did look significantly small in the finals against Sumpolec. Hutcherson has a family member in this forum maybe he can fact check this?

Brown is another one with questions on if he can get to HWT. He has the frame but would need to get on the Josh Barr plan!

He cannot. But he can call the coach and remind him of that, in this hypothetical.

The story keeps getting pushed back a day (it should be out tomorrow) but talked to him about that in Hershey last weekend.

Brown's frame is huge. As long as he commits to the weightroom and Kasak's cow, he will be just fine 😄
He absolutely towers over the other PSU commits (and Hutcherson) in pictures. Looks every bit of 6'4" with really wide shoulders. I have no idea with Hutcherson and Hoare, but with three more years before Mirasola is gone, you have to think 235+ for Brown is realistic before he's PSU's starting HWY.

You are correct ish. 184 was probably max, 180-182 is probably more true.

Heard people talking at states and it sounded like Brown is coming up here early? Apparently the staff wants him at 235 to start the season next year.

I'm also intrigued about some lineup rumors I heard for next year. Everyone will have to wait until after nationals when next years lineup talk really heats up to view my predictions.

What does "early" mean? He only has about 8-10 weeks of HS left, and all of the wrestlers arrive for summer session anyway. It's not uncommon for some of the wrestlers to return home for HS graduation, just based on their home school's calendar vs the PSU calendar.

I was told "he's coming up in the next few weeks to start summer classes and get in the room". I have no idea when summer classes start or how long "few weeks" is. Most high schools that I know of don't end until late May, early June. To me thats a couple months, not a few weeks. We'll find out soon I suppose.

PSU spring finals week is 5/4-8, and summer session starts M 5/18. That's a much earlier start to summer classes than I'm used to, but whatever.

Then maybe what I heard is actually correct and he is graduating early to start summer classes in mid May.

Most HS graduates who start at PSU in the summer do so as part of the LEAP program. That also corresponds with PSU's Second 6-Week Summer session, with classes starting on July 1.

It's possible for HS students to start at PSU during PSU's First 6-Week Summer session, but that takes a good deal of advance planning to finish up the HS graduation requirements early, as classes start on May 18th, with finals taking place on Jun 29th. It's pretty rare for HS students to start at this time, as by and large, if a student meets the HS graduation requirements to be able to start PSU this early, they would typically also have met the requirements in time to start in the Spring semester in January.
