Pope blaming fatigue…

Do you remember how you were scolding me for starting threads about Pope? And now you're starting them at about a 2:1 ratio over me. Hilarious! Welcome to the dark side!
I knew Kev would figure it out soon enough. Cowtown will too, matter of time. Looks like Noci made the move as well, I’m seeing 2 more that were nailing me begin to like the post.

Pope was propaganda. It was hard to let it go, “front of the jersey”, “one of us”, “anti Calipari”. It really got some hard, it never really worked on me. I was against the hire but then thought maybe the NIL can recruit for him. Didn’t happen I was done. We all would love a Pitino guy to come in, protect the program, and win. But if it’s not there it’s not there. You can’t force those storylines just because you want it.

I wanted Pope to work because I wanted the Pitino era guys to be what Hall and Rupp era guys were, protectors of the program. I thought Mark might be able to be that. But then, he sucked up to Mitch immediately. He showed early on he’s not going to protect this place the way those guys did. Then the Jeff Sheppard reportedly doesn’t get involved in those things, And others like DA, McCarty, Walker, etc they aren’t those types that have weight. So my idea of that quickly died. And if he can’t do that then there’s no need in him being here. Mark isn’t powerful enough as a coach to pull weight. He’s going to do what he’s told. So I’m done with all that. Cal is gone and his guys don’t care enough. I don’t know who’s going to protect the program now from the administration. It’s up to boosters and fans.

I don’t know the man to dislike him. I despise what he is doing to UK basketball. He tries to cover his coaching flaws with the fanbase with emotional pleas.
Right. And I’ve been told by two different guys who would know that he’s rubbed some contributors wrong too. Not quite as nice as it’s made out. Just what I heard. Maybe nice isn’t the right word, but just not as liked as I figured he would be by many.

Remember when Kenny Payne was the coach of Louisville?
Remember how after every loss, Kenny would give some answer that everyone shook their head at.

Mark Pope is now Kenny Payne when it comes to bad quotes during a press conference. Just unbelievable.
Louisville was smart enough to get rid of Kenny Payne after his second year. And before you say “b-but poor Pope got us to the Sweet 16!” I should remind you that our standards should be higher and don’t forget that we were blown out that Sweet 16 game. It was an embarrassment.

I have been saying this since the season started. He is immature, tells people what they want to hear, then backtracks and acts childish (to staff and players). He is an expert in gaslighting. He has major personality flaws.

It's ridiculous to say that about 18 to 24 year old athletes. I played 3 to 4 hours straight 4 days a week until I was around 32. Now this wasn't every week, but at least 80% of them. I never felt fatigued. And I was the guy that people hated to guard because I never stopped moving and on defense never allowed my guy to get the ball. These guys are athletes. They have a strength and conditioning program. Fatigue should never be a factor playing their 25 minutes a game 2 times a week....ever. he needs to stop trying to justify his bs substitution patterns. I have not been hammering Pope like a lot of people on here, and their repetitiveness has ruined this board, but about 25 % of what is being complained about are legitimate complaints.

Someone might want to let him know SEC tournament is played every day once you start with no off days...........

Oh and that NCAA thing has only 1 day off between 1st/2nd rounds

I wasn’t sold sold on him. I thought our first couple of seasons might like Yr 1 was. Some really good wins. Couple of clunkers and a decent S16 finish while he built up the program.

Sadly this year has torched that. If we had decent recruits coming I’d be willing to give him next year to show he can truly do it. But we don’t. And that’s sooooo disappointing.
I was neutral at first but then I got sucked in by the big introduction ceremony. Last year was better than I expected.

This year we have regressed and any red flags that popped up in year one are now on full display.

The more I think about this, the more I feel someone needs to sit Pope down and tell him to talk less.

#1 Duke played #11 UVA on Saturday, turned around and played a road game at NC St on Monday. Won both by double digits

#2 Zona played #14 KU on Saturday then played #6 Iowa St on Monday. Won both by double digits

Idk he may be correct in some fashion about fatigue, but it's his job to make sure the conditioning is good enough not to be so fatigue. Whatever happened to running until you puke? Pope wasn't too good for it when he was a player.
I don’t buy the fatigue nonsense. Again, they pissed the 12 point lead away in the first half. Thats not fatigue, that’s terrible basketball.

Yeah, nice isn’t the right word, he’s super nice. He’s not necessarily affording some donors with access and benefits/perks that have been routine in the past. I think that is an issue.

I said that a couple weeks ago and the popettes made personal attacks. But that's all they have so I'm good with it. I was a bit surprised by it myself but there's some real difference makers really upset with the whole situation. I don't think they have demanded that Pope be let go but they are demanding change. But what change can happen with Pope?

I get it that some think he can change. I even read it here. That's why I'm not as certain as I used to be that Pope is getting a 3rd year. I still think he is. But I would not be surprised now if he's gone.

This will not be a popular opinion but I really think UK spends an inordinate amount of time trying to make Pope look like a good guy.

I don’t think it’s even really intentional. He’s a really nice guy. It’s more likely coming from a place of insecurity.

I was sucked in by the jamboree at Rupp too. It was amazing. But the night it was apparent he was the choice I was so pissed I couldn’t see straight. Obviously that was for a reason, his resume shows that he should not have been offered. I don’t blame Mark though. No way in hell he would turn down that job. His dream! I want and hope he can do it. I’m still hoping. Next season is it though. I’ll keep rooting for him, but I’ll keep pointing out some real issues.

I like Pope and hope he exceeds expectations next year (heck, even finishes strong this year). However, how many of you all played B-ball non stop when you were younger? I played like that until I was 35. Come on....that's shouldn't be an issue.

If it's an issue, Pope is being to easy on these guys.
I have defended him to this point but it’s getting really hard. The only explanation if he is a good coach is he is playing the long game. He needs to find out who to bring back and who to cut loose. He continues to say the key to winning is retaining his good players. If he brings back Garrison. He isn’t serious. This season is a wash. He’s gotta know that. Maybe he is auditioning for next year??

As up and down Garrison has been, I wouldn't want to play against him, if he's playing for Cal or Oates, next year.

It was one of the greatest UK events I’ve ever been to. Waited out there about 5/6 hours and got down low with the kids. The atmosphere was unbelievable. But ya know the thing is, we have to go by the state of the program and nothing else. And pope just isn’t the guy, I wish he was. But I look objectively from all sides or try to, and I’ve done this a long time as some of you have. I see no way he can break through. I could write 2 pages on why, it’s just isn’t there.

It really did. I bought the preseason hype with this team as well. I thought we were going to have a really good basketball team

And thats how it should be, true fans always hope for a great year. I'm pretty sure Pope and who ever came up with that, sold the world, not just Kentucky fans. The so called experts in the media had us kicking some a.ss this year also, before it started.

He uses those metrics to get the peak performance out of his players!
Can't we see that from the results? 😄😤

This is how I'm coping with this season to hype myself up for next season. I'm going to assume Pope knew the season was shot after Lowe got hurt before the MSU game and just punted to next season. Hopefully that explains the ridiculous substitutions as maybe just trying to just see if anyone is worth bringing back. Hopefully it explains the lack of consistency and effort as maybe the players can sense he gave up on this season early. It's coping I know. I just want this nightmare to be over one way or another

Why did we hire such an inept coach who offers nothing but excuses? Does he know how weak this makes him look not only to the fans but also his own players?

I was scanning through games on TV a couple of days ago and in one of the games they were talking about a Delaware player called Christian Bliss. He was the academic player of the year and had an AVERAGE PLAYING TIME PER GAME of 39.5 minutes per game. So he essentially played the full game every game this year.

WTF Coach Pope?????

Now I get what Jela was talking about it…. He plays good but doesn’t get the minutes Not even when Mo is sitting with 2 fouls.

Garrison is also right to complain about Aberdeen not putting the ball up for an easy dunk intead of a contested 2 that he missed.

the bigs are setting hard screens for guards they need to rewarded every now and then. I am sure the locker room has many of these discussions.

its frustrating to be in sec tournament and Pope didn’t address this .

We all like the man. The man and the coach are two different people. We're tired of coach pope.
Perfectly stated. I had my doubts when he was hired but the energy was back. The enthusiasm was there. BBM was exciting again and I looked forward to games again. I was impressed by how nice a guy he was and thought he is a great representative of the program. We should have had a probationary period lol.

He's still a good person and loved for his UK history. Maybe he understands this and makes the decision to walk away before that legacy is permanently tarnished. I felt the same with Cal and when he left on his own to me he recovered a piece of the negative history he was about to leave behind.

I think Pope was primarily referring to Moreno imo. He's a freshman and it's catching up to him.
