It’s interesting that you’re thinking about this later in life. I have one family member in his 60s that lives just north of Center City. He truly loves Philly (art, theater, etc), except during the pandemic and the riots in 2020 as his neighborhood was hit hard. He is likely in a very different situation than you (he’s gay and imbedded in that social scene in the city.) He was in NYC for his entire life and moved to Philly in the late ‘90s and never left it.

Just turned 60, been in Center City condo 16 years. Block away from city hall. Easy access to restaurants, museums, small and large parks, transportation to all parts of city and airport. Love the convenience to everything. Grandkids enjoy visiting Franklin Institute and Chinatown. Traffic in and out and noise around neighborhood part of city life. Some areas not yet rebounded from Covid. If you enjoy the conveniences of city life, it’s a cosmopolitan city with blue collar foundation. Works well for me, wife and dog.

Used to be a great area but after the BLM riots the radical left decriminalized crime. You could not pay me to live there, now. I even have one friend who was shot in Rittenhouse around 2000.

I would go with West Chester, media, Doylestown, or conshohocken and then have easy access to the city as needed. Still have the access but no bs, no homeless, and less crime.

If I had to live in the city it would probably be Chestnut hill, manayunk or east falls. Center city, old city, wash sq, art museum, ucity, and Fairmont used to be great but they all went downhill. Even wawa is leaving the city.

Why didn't you raise your kids there?

All those conveniences can be had from the suburbs. Just as easy to go to the airport or museums from the suburbs.

Son2 lived on his own in Ritt for 2 years on 20th/Spruce. It’s fantastic. Safe, people everywhere, high energy and a Jewish stronghold. If moms and I were to do it, having a garage would be a must have (1 mil min?)
He’s in Fairmont now on a beautiful tight street where all the neighbors know each other, I love that if you were 30-35yo. Enjoy!
How old are your kids? thought still in hs.

Potter, Tgar wanted to expand further on his original comment. it may not be a forever place ( though maybe it is ) but it is a wonderful neighborhood. Restaurants, shops, parks, sidewalks, ample opportunities everyday to find a mingle or conversational engagement. A library nearby is never bad and being able to walk for medical, banking, etc is great if it is available nearby.

The neighborhood surrounding the park always feels safe. People have dogs, people walk around, the park gets used, it is a vibrant location in the city. You are right on the edge of downtown and a short trip to the stadiums. You can walk to the theaters. Should you decide you need a quick trip to the shore, the drive is manageable. The airport is an uber ride away. Heck, everything becomes an uber ride away. Get rid of one of the cars.

Wishing you all the best as you make this important decision for your future happiness. Keep us posted.

The radical left absolutely decriminalized crime. We have criminals who get arrested 50+ times and never go to jail. How many times does someone have to be arrested to go to jail? The school district has 20,000 reported crimes a year and some years zero expulsions. Are you kidding me? That is a joke. In PHilly the good kids have to leave the schools and find a charter. In Kensington the FD used to pick up 2 bodies a day from ODs. It is an open air drug market. The police have even been told not to enforce certain crimes.

What crimes does PHilly actually enforce?

This shooter in this video walked. Is that your idea of tough enforcement? How does someone shoot someone with an ak-47 and walk?

There are hundreds of shooting videos just in Philly.

The only time this DA is tough on crime is if the crime involves a cop or a conservative politician. Everyone else walks.

Notice how people are move out of the city when they have kids and then move back to the city after their kids are grown? Deep down they know the city is a chithole. They dont want to raise their kids there. If you think I am wrong then move to the city and send your kids to public school. You will get a reality check.

I don’t know how old you guys are but in my world I live where the grandbabies live. We almost built a home on Lake Norman. As we look back, I’m so thankful we set up shop in DE, an hour south of Philly. How anybody could ditch their grandbabies is beyond me.

Yo, how many ritt house square home owners (1.5 mil n up) are sending their kids to public schools. Don’t be daft OR silly. If you’re rich, Philly is a playground. I think that’s triple true for NYC.

something else to consider are neighbors. The more money, the better the street, the better the neighbors. If you hang around 1 mil, you will be surrounded by rentals (literally on both shared walls). The transient nature of Jeff, Penn med, temple, you’d have a different experience every 12 months. This would be my biggest concern.
scoring on these streets would be a win

Money does not make the neighborhood safe. More PSU football alumni stabbed to death in Rittenhouse than the rest of the state combined.

The city is so great that the op waited til his kids grew up to move to the city.

It is ironic that people from Rittenhouse avoid the public schools using the policies that they promoted for the masses.

Rigi19040- thank you for taking such an interest in my family’s education, but don’t assume we didn’t raise our kids in a city. You know what they say about assuming. I’d be more than happy to visit you in the basement moms suburban home and we can share family stories, just send me your address.

you you do your airport thing, I’ll do mine. Eveyone has their own opinion. Just like everyone had an a$$hole. Funny, how many time I use the a$$ responding to your email. Hmm. Have a good evening.

Figured no one would agree...
It’s not for everyone. The great thing about the U.S. is that you can pretty much choose whatever lifestyle/culture you want and make a life there. I prefer PA and the northeast/mid-atlantic myself, but there are parts of the south that are beautiful to me as well. Even PA has a little bit of just about everything. You can go from Philly area to Amish county in a little over an hour or so.

Whatever floats your boat. Grew up in the Philly burbs and used to enjoy taking the train in and spending time in the city, however, that was back in the 90s. I know someone who moved from Philly burbs to Fairmount neighborhood and loves it. Loves the neighborhood feel of it, walk in to bars and restaurants and everybody knows you name kind of neighborhood. On the flip side, I know people who have lived in Center City for decades and got fed up with it, like a few blocks from City Hall. Couldn't walk down the street anymore without being badgered for money by the homeless and also the constant crime in the area. This was all under Mayor Katz I think. Everybody's experience is different, I for one hate people and opt for the seclusion of the mountains. However, the grand babies argument is going to weigh heavy when those days come. Our kids are spread all over the east coast so a move south may be in the future(this long arse cold winter is helping to push us south).

Not a popular opinion, but I would move down south.
I did and it's the best move I have made.... Love living in Delray Beach, FL. Couldn't drag me back to PA to live. Not the PA I grew up in.
