Just listened to PA Powers AAA preview for states. I know Teag is a freshman but that 172lb bracket is one of the weakest in AAA. I think Teag can win it. They did not pick him to win it, but he is capable of beating Speece in the semifinals and Dennis in the finals. That would be awesome to see.

My friend at keystone wrestling had him finishing 7th, which I think is rather low. I think he can get anything from the title to 4th.

Yeah it's actually incredibly rare. You almost never see a freshman up at any weight after 160, excluding heavy which of course is an anomaly for the sport all by itself. He has a shot at the championship too, and the only kid I can even think of is maybe Terry Williams of BEN or Nate Carr of Erie East. Both of those examples are over 45 years ago.

Chris Kwortnik.

Adam Waters(Faith Christian) is going for his 4th State Title this year. He won his freshman year at 172. Truly not getting the recognition he deserves. Going to Ohio State.

I think Sidun will be a mad man this weekend at PIAA's. Even though he lost to Gallegos he was the one looking to score. Gallegos wrestled a smart defensive match, but i cant see Sidun not just demolishing his bracket this weekend.
If you watch the match, I thought Sidun had a takedown at the end of SV. He had a boot in and cross body ride and Gallegos had a whizzer, but you see that position called a takedown 8 out of 10 times (or maybe 83% of the time).😅

Speece techd Teag earlier this year. Pretty quickly So did another kid in the bracket.

172 isn’t very deep, but Teag is likely not touching the top 5 unless there are injuries.

Teag is a great prospect, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. He’s still a kid and he’ll be wrestling a few men this weekend.

Many of the kids El Jefe cited were sophomore aged, fully pubertized guys. That won’t be the case here. He’s not winning it. West region was very weak at this weight.

Since this has been posted twice this week, let's put this narrative to bed before it grows legs.

17 FR placed at 170+ in the past 10 years:
- 2016: Kawaun Deboe
- 2017: Gaige Garcia
- 2018: Nate Schon, Kolby Franklin
- 2019: Dayton Pitzer
- 2020: (none)
- 2021: Sean Kinney, Rune Lawrence
- 2022: Caleb Close, Austin Johnson
- 2023: Dean Bechtold, Adam Waters, Jason Singer
- 2024: Hunter Snyder
- 2025: Mario Hutcherson, Kendahl Hoare, Decker Bechtold, Jayden O’Farrill

This is all in the PIAA brackets available at https://brackets.pa-wrestling.com

I’m too lazy to dig into brackets further back … but offhand, Gavin Hoffman placed at 170 in 2015. So that's at least 18 in the past 11 years, and it happening in 10 of the past 11 years.
Jefe to the rescue, as always!!!

Kwortnik was at 155 as a frosh in 1986 and lost in the first round. First round losers did not get into consis at the time, so he was one and done at PIAAs. His 4 year record was 32-1, 34-0, 37-0, 38-0.
Kwortnik took it out on everybody else for the next 3 years.

Lost to Scott Henry who took first the next year at 155 while Kwortnik bumped up and took first at 167.

I saw Kwortnick beat Kevin Smith from Northampton in the finals their Senior year. Both were undefeated and Smith was a little odd and crazy funky. For the first half of match it was just wild. Eventually Chris started to work his trademark arm bars. He made Smith scream like a baby. Don Rohn was even cringing a couple of times during the beating.I know there is video of it but I can't find it.

The guy who beat Kwortnik then lost his next 2 matches and was done, but won 155 the next year. I am not 100% positive, but I think Kwortnik bonused everybody at states for the next 3 years.

Sorry dice. I didn't read your post until I started reading the rest of the thread.

I guess you are right. Thanks for destroying my hopes of him winning it this year LOL. I did not know Speece teched him earlier in the year. I will go against what you predict and say Teag finishes 4th or 5th. Hope I'm right.

Dennis is no slouch either. He can score a lot in a hurry.

I should've looked more closely at Teag's path. PA Wrestling has a common Opponents tool.

His 2 potential quarters opponents (Hostetter and Simak) are both tough draws for him. Very good chance he doesn't get to Speece.

Of the potiential consi opponents:
- Frable would be a challenge if they meet in consis.
- Burd beat Teag 11-10 in January. Teag is improved, so that result might flip.
- Corp beat him 12-6 at King of the Mountain
- Teag is probably better than Sallit and Amspacher

I expected to see Chance but I guess his freshman year was under 170

I have him at 7th-
losing to Hostetter in QTs and Corp in the Consi's but beating Sallit for 8th

IMO we'll be in touch with Karenbauer, at least until Sanchez commits. Same with Wenrich.

I don't think we get Decker Bechtold, but would still keep an eye on him.

There are also quite a few uncommitted seniors, who might be good depth candidates at PSU, assuming we have roster space and they don't want to start elsewhere. Kapusta, Scherer, Burd, Bliss. Depth space is gonna be very limited, so it's possible we don't go after any uncommitted seniors.

K. Bassett(15) knocks off #2 Bubash 9-8.
Those rankings might be reversed. Bubash was 7th at SW regionals last week, probably not #2. Bassett is the SW regional champ.

More than a little shocking that he was that close to Bassett and won the takedown battle.
