I had a lot of chances to meet celebs over the years. Probably the most notable occasion was spending 5 days at the 12 hours of Sebring. My good friend was a big sponsor and he was/is good friends with Patrick Dempsey. Patrick was just starting to get into the racing scene. Those guys and I , and spent 5 days in a house near the track. Patrick was a very nice and down to earth guy. His wife just had twins that were about 2 y.o., and he would often call her to check in. Grey's Anatomy was big at the time. When we would walk around the track the young ladies were swooning. When we were drinking atop a motor home, we got surrounded by ladies chirping. It was funny. Patrick did borrow my shampoo one day. Ebay was relatively new, and I said I was going to auction off a PD used bottle of shampoo. He didn't find it too funny but everyone else laughed.
Harry Winer a movie producer was there as well staying with us. I only knew him from being married to model/actress Shelly Hack. He was scouting out the idea of a racing movie that didn't come to fruition. I hoped it would as he liked me and said he would get me in the movie somewhere.
I met Paul Newman there in one of the courtesty suites. He was very nice.
At 24 hours of Daytona, I was a guest as well of my sponsor friend, and met Kyle Petty, Bobby Rahal, and a young Danica Patrick.
On plane flights, I sat next to Gerry Cooney, and a row behind but said hi to Bobby Knight. Bobby wasn't th most friendly guy and he was a big man. Gerry was reading a self improvement book. He was very polite, and understated.
In the gym at Pitt, I met Ron Kolb, Mike Webster, and a third OL I don't recall.
I was in a bench press meet with Steve Courson. I was in 242#, and he was in the open division. He wasn't into talking. After he finished 2nd , even less outgoing.
Bars at PSU meet a lot of guys that played from 78-82. Worked at Mr. C's and guys would filter through. Met Matt Millen in Rec Hall a couple times. Joe Bastardi used to work out almost everyday. He had a black leather jacket he would wear, and looked Springsteen-ish. We lifted together quite a bit, but in gym fashion you didn't really exchange any deep details. Yo, big guy, I need a spot.
Drinking in the bars in Oakland in the Burgh, would see and briefly talk to Marino, Fralic, and Maas.
Downtown at Heaven saw Terry Bradshaw for a hello. Donny Shell at Confetti bar. Courson would be around on the South Side. In Station Square, bought a beer for Goose Gossage, and shared some time with him. Great guy.
Met Johnny Unitas in the club level concourse at the opening of M&T. Very nice, tall guy with big hands with bad arthritis. He had a hard time gripping a pen to sign my game ticket. Said hi to Ali in the club level. Talked to Ray Lewis, and Jonathan Ogden at a club level ticket holder banquet.
Used to have great O's tickets right next to the owner's seats just inside the dugout and before the netting around row 4. Sat next to Mrs. Ripken, and then Tara Reid and also Snow Patrol . Used to chat with Boog at his BBQ pit.
Albert B Chandler, the comissioner who had a big hand in helping Jackie Robinson get into MLB, and also Coach Eddie Sutton at the UK Med Center.
At Flyers fundraisers, met Bobby Clarke, Dave Schultz, Bernie Parent, and Bob Kelly.
Ate at the same table at a fund raiser York Junior League with Bill O'Reilly. Next year I met Laura Bush and had a picture with her. She was very gracious.
Said hi to Trump at Doral circa 2005. Played golf right behind two time World Long Drive Champion Tim Burke on the Blue Monster.
Had drinks with Jon Tafer, Bar Rescue at Blue Martini in Naples. On other occasions saw other pro golfers there including Keegan Bradley.
Met Rocky Patel at his bar Burn in Naples. Been to the Sharkshoot out then the Templeton numerous times at Tiburon in Naples. Said hi to many pro golfers as the event was not over crowded. Greg Norman hosted and was around. I overheard him talking to Nobilo in the bar saying he was having a hard time keeping up with his new GF after Chris Evert. She always wanted to go. Lucky Greg.
Arnold , Franco, Zane and many pro bodybuilders in the 1975-85 years.
Met Adam Carolla showing his vintage Lambo at Concourso Italiano in Monterrey back when he was on The Man Show .
Was eating lunch with a friend in Beverly Hills while out for the Rose Bowl. My friend who is an endurance race car driver was eating with Jon Lovitz a few tables over. We joined them for lunch. They were at the Playboy mansion the night before. They said it took forever to finally get an invite. They said it was a blast of course.
Chatted with Anthony Kim back when he was a rising PGA star at another Cigar Bar in Naples.
Met a lot of pro athletes at autograph signings.
Met a lot of LPGA stars at the two US Opens at Lancaster CC including Natalie Gulbis. Very cute and friendly.
Amanda Balionis, sportscaster, baby sat my kids. Taught them how to sprint.

Vince and Pedersen are both members where I work a couple of days a week. Vince isn't himself (at all). He's going through some rough stuff according to Janet.
That's too bad. Hopefully it's something he can get through.

Celebrity……what a variety has been shared….and how is Celebrity really defined?

The meeting most important to us individually, may mean absolutely nothing to others.

notable for me, “Green Bar Bill” and Dr E Urner Goodman…..
Interesting...Dr E Urner Goodman....credited with founding the Boy Scout's Order of the Arrow....I am a Vigil member from Lodge #44 ..... Green Bar Bill.....actual name William Hillcourt....another major influential individual from early years of BSA.

I should clarify that the dementia is by observation - by me and the rest of the staff, and I'd say it's a little past early onset. He just doesn't seem all there.

I talk to Janet about the cancer though, and he has a lot of physical stuff that's going on with it like the treatment and what it brings along. I think his treatment is down in Delray.

Was at Tinker Field in Orlando FL with my Dad in 1974 to see a Yankees v Twins spring training game while we were on Easter vacation …. my late father was a big Whitey Ford fan, as we lived in Binghamton where the Yanks farm team was located up until 1969 (Whitey and Billy Martin, among others, were known to be fixtures at Binghamton beer-joints) ; Whitey was the NYY pitching coach in ‘74 and my dad noticed him standing alone near the dugout during warmups… he dragged me down to the railing where he introduced himself to Whitey as being from Binghamton - Whitey’s face lit up and began asking my Dad if certain First Ward bars were still there (most of which were) - Whitey rambled down memory lane for a few minutes rattling off names of bars - annotating with some select (hazy) memories / stories of each… eventually excusing himself/apologizing that he wished he had more time to talk … My dad was in heaven

I was the bar manager at a trendy Philly waterfront restaurant bar in the early 90s when I was in grad school. It was very popular with athletes and it wasn't uncommon to have Phillies in the lounge after Sunday games. I met a ton of athletes then. Curiously, that place was probably more popular with visiting athletes. I'll say this: John Kruk and Darren Daulton were good dudes and down to earth. Bubby Brister was the coolest athlete I ever met - he just got it and was a fantastic tipper. Super cool dude. Manute Bol was a close 2nd. A giant man that unfolded his frame from a chair. Bernie Parent would come to bar for a meal occasionally and was always very charming and very sober (no drink: "I had my share")... I can go on.

Hers are a few:
1) Riding my bike home from summer school after failing algebra 1 freshman year of high school I was run off the road by a speeding a-hole in a black (I think) Mercedes. As I picked myself up off of the grass I saw the PA license plate was TEKE 27. So I was either run off the road by Kent Tekulve or the biggest Kent Tekulve fan around.
2) At a dive bar in West Belmar, NJ in the mid-90s I shook the not-really-human-sized hand of former Jazz center Mark Eaton, called out Chuck Nevitt who responded to me with finger guns, and sat about three feet away from Anthony Mason who was with two scantily clad women and looked like he didn’t want to be bothered by my drunken ***.
3) Working at a liquor store in Manasquan, NJ. in the early 90s a big dude walked in wearing a tank top and stood, staring at the only display we had with soda for a couple of minutes. Finally he turned to us at the counter and said, “Do you guys have Pepsi?”. I waited a second to see if he was joking then, realizing he wasn’t, said, “Directly in front of you, about one shelf below eye level.” He said, “Oh man, I didn’t see it!” Fast forward a couple of years, I was completely unsurprised he didn’t see Larry Brown awaiting his pass.

I was thinking about it, and I've had some cool ones.

* Rod Stewart paying everyone's tab at ER Bradleys on Palm Beach on his birthday while Rachel danced on the bar in front of me. One of those had to see it to believe it times.

* Meeting Arnold Palmer at the urinals in the locker room at PGA and shaking hands immediately after. He told my boss he wanted me shuttling him around the property the rest of the day.

* Playing 9 holes not with, but in front of Jack (Michael was playing a practice round and it was slow. Jack didn't even have his clubs) and hitting the tee shot on #10 40 yards out of bounds to his "sigh". I did make birdie on the 2nd ball and played even from there. But he was miserable, and I had already known him.

* I think I'm meeting a property manager on Jup Island on a sales call. Nope the property manager and ONJ. She asked me if I'd mind following her to the backyard. I wanted to tell her I'd follow her into the Intracoastal Waterway.

* This was the best - played in a 3-some with Joe Namath and Bobby Murcer. There was a celebrity tour and they had a stop in WPB. On an off day Joe called and asked if they could come out (he lives in Tequesta). I told my boss. You can fire me this afternoon, but they are not playing as a 2-some. Not while I'm alive. It was great. I offered Bobby a chew, but he had long quit. Afterwards, Bobby drank iced tea, Joe a few beers. Bobby was a much better player.
Gave a ride to "ol blue eyes" when his limo did not show. Met Bob Hope (really funny guy), George peppard, surprised at his height, Mickey Rooney, stunned at his lack of height. lol

Hope you will allow an addition - worked for Penske Racing for 2 years at his Michigan Track in Brooklyn MI -- PR for the VIP guests that attended NASCAR and Cart races.
Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin were gentlemen in all actions with fans.
Would walk Jeff Gordon down pit road for time trials - the fans would try to surround him. His first wife would follow - nobody liked her.
Charles and Mary Rausch were the greatest - made sure I had every trinket available. Dave Rausch was too busy.
Dale Sr. was big in stature, stayed out of the limelight and dusted Rusty one time.
for Cart - told Mario to get off his scooter and slow down or else he would injure someone, he never listened.

Off topic, but related to your post . . . I technically worked for Roger Penske for a couple of weeks. It was the early nineties and it was summer break. A few friends and I were playing basketball at a park in Nazareth. A woman drove up and asked us if we wanted to make some money. Me and a couple of other guys said yes and went for a ride with her (it was a different time back then). She said that she worked for Roger Penske and they needed help setting up at the speedway (Nazareth Speedway) for a big race in a couple of weeks. I worked everyday; we got paid in cash at the end of the day. We were there when the drivers were practicing. I remember literally sitting on the wall as a car raced by 100+ miles an hour a few feet from me and thinking how dangerous this sport must be. In the days leading up to the race the caterers were coming in and setting up the VIP tents and we were allowed to drink as much as we wanted, as long as we worked. It was good money (I think like $10 per hour, which seemed like a lot to a high school kid back then). We even got race passes but I didn't go to the race because I wasn't really a racing fan. Was hoping she would come back the next summer, but I never got the opportunity again.

Have had several encounters with celebrities ... the 2 that are probably the most memorable were :

[1] at a ND - Navy game in Baltimore's old Memorial Stadium, was standing in a concession line at half time, and right in front of me was John Unitas.

[2] After a performance at the Kennedy Center in DC, went up to the lounge and shared a table with Melissa Gilbert. Had a nice chat, mostly about her experience acting in The Miracle Worker. And after that, took an elevator down to the parking garage, and in it was Cheryl Ladd ... much more beautiful in person than in movies or on TV.

Worst tipper: Gene Hart the "voice" license plate. Egomaniac a-hole.

A guy who I never met but could tell was a total dick was sports writer Bill Conlin from the Phila Daily news aka daily fishwrap.

He wrote a story claiming the 2010 Phillies had the greatest infield of all time when they acquired Placido Polanco. Howard, Utley, Rollins and Polanco. I replied to the story. I was polite and I said the new infield was not even better than the previous years infield much less the best of all time. Howard, Utley, Rollins and Feliz had 45 more HRs and 125 more RBIs the previous year. Phillies regressed at all 4 positions.

I also listed the 2010 Yanks of Texeira, Arod, Jeeter and Cano and the 80 Phillies of Rose, Schmidt, Trillo and Bowa. Either way it is debatable and everyone has their favorite.

Conlin then sends me a picture of his Sports Writer Hall of Fame plaque and his vacation house in florida. HUH? What a douchbag. Maybe I should have sent a pic of my house.

In 2011 Conlin was exposed as a child molester. Temple guy. One of the victims had gone to the police in 2009.

Bob Dole was ok (we were interviewing him and his admin was going to take my office), but not my best.

That goes to…Joe DiMaggio. It’s 1983, I’m in college, and my uncle Charlie who was with the dodgers calls to says he has tix to every game of the o’s Phil’s series. We go to game 4 in Philly and end up in the nosebleeds. My dad made a smartass comment about it to Charlie. So the next day we show up and Charlie says to follow him. We end up in the owners club at the vet (table seating!), and my buddy and I are on the end. There’s a table empty next to us for a while, then a bit of a commotion as Mr coffee himself sits down. Buddys dad says to ask him for his autograph but we don’t want to invade his privacy. About the 7th inning he gets up to leave, strolls over to our table, greets Charlie who everybody knows, and says, “who are these two fine young men?” Nice chat, but didn’t get the autograph.

lots of other baseball guys through Charlie - brooks and frank robinson, Lou Brock, enos slaughter, Bob Gibson, Billy Martin, Ricky Henderson - but DiMaggio tops the list.
Had the obvious reply but someone beat me to it.

Shook hands with President Nixon. Dad used to fly radar planes for his aircraft. Long ago, on an air force base he would walk from the plane to the terminal. We would stand along a 3-foot high chain-link fence near the terminal. He would walk over shake hands and say hi! How times have changed.

Caddied at the LKO in Hershey and meet many of the top players (best time was walking 18 holes with Jan Stevenson in her prime). Ray Knight and Nancy Lopas came by the theater I worked at and ask me to keep watch over his car :)

Semi-funny story, though not involving me.

I used to be a very amateur bike racer. Some years ago, Lance Armstrong was in town during the peak of his powers to lead a Livestrong cancer foundation fundraiser and charity ride. So one of my teammates, for whom oncology was personal, raised a ton of money and as a result got to ride at the front of the pack with Lance. As it turned out, the route they were using included a substantial stretch from our club's weekly training ride, including a stretch with a long uphill drag where we would normally run an intermediate sprint to the stoplight at the top. So as they approach the bottom of this thing, my buddy remarks to Lance that this is usually where we do our hill sprint on our weekly club training ride, and that he'd never actually been able to win it. Lance leaned over to him and whispered - "go for it...nobody else here knows!" So my buddy rode off the front to take his first bragging rights.

I have enjoyed this thread. Some of you guys have met some super famous people.

I’ll add a few more to my previous post about meeting Jerry Sloan.

1. Was in Youngstown, Ohio with my dad as a teen. We were standing in line at Handels ice cream. (Outside, where you walk up and order at window). Suddenly, my dad said, “That’s Ray Boom Boom Mancini”. Sure enough, he was ordering ice cream. No one else was around so we talked a few minutes. As a 17 year old, I remember towering over him. He was very small, but obviously packed a punch. A very cool guy.

2. I was walking in the Kenwood Mall near Cincinnati Ohio on a Monday morning. The mall had just opened and there weren’t many people there. I was taking my small son into a Cardboard Heroes store (I think that’s what it was called. They sold jerseys and hats, etc). Out walked Chad Johnson, aka Ocho Cinco. This was shortly after his playing days. We had about a 2 minute convo. I remember him saying the Miami Dolphins were in town to play the Bengals. He was living in Miami and had “came home”. Seemed down to earth enough to say hello.

3. As a kid, I met a super old man named Preacher Roe. He was living in a little Missouri town I used to visit. My dad introduced me to him and I didn’t think much about it. Got his autograph. Found out later, he was a 5 time all star and pitched in the 1949 World Series. Beat the Yankees in a game he pitched.

My ex-wife's family, who are from Youngstown, were friends with Ray and his family. I never personally met him but they shared stories and pictures.

This reminded me of another celebrity encounter that I had with Jim Tressel while he was the coach at YSU. My ex attended YSU and was a cheerleader. One day we were in the lobby of the Beeghly Center and Tressel walked across the lobby to say hello to my ex and I shook his hand and introduced myself. After he was gone, I asked her how he knew her so well and she confided that she often took tests and wrote papers for the players at YSU. My ex also knew and worked for Mickey Monus in a sort of unofficial capacity. You can look up the history of Tressel, Monus and YSU and put 2 and 2 together.

I never knew there were so many Parasociaites on this board. 🙄

Parasocial interactions and relationships
(PSIs/PSRs) are one-sided, psychological bonds where a person invests emotional energy, time, and interest into a media figure, celebrity, or influencer who is unaware of their existence.

Let Jerry Rice and his foursome go in front of us at the turn, at the Eagleridge Golf Course, near Gilroy. Saw Charles Barkley (from a distance) putting out on hole 9 at Carmel Valley Ranch. Starter bumped us for Raider WR Tim Brown and group, on a course in Reno. Forgot the name of the course. Yes, I play golf, some.

- I got to meet and have a nice conversation with Bob Dole at an event for a friend who was running for congress. Almost forgot Alan Keyes was there too.
- Met Yogi Berra at his Bowling alley when I was a kid. His son went to my HS for a year.
- Met Ted Ligety at the after party the day he won the GS gold medal at the world championship.
- Chris Anthony on multiple occasions. Was friends with his now late mother.
- Not really a celebrity but also met President Jerry Ford's brother Tom Ford during the 76 campaign.
- Met the then future Governor of NJ Tom Kean during the 76 campaign.
- worked with then future congressman (who knew) John LeBoutlillier during the 76 campaign.
- Met and worked with former congresswoman Marjorie Holt.
- Met Joe Paterno at an event.
- Billy Kidd at an event

People I didn't really "meet" but probably could have if I tried. Phil Rizzuto (got an autograph), Ethyl Kennedy, Walter Mondale, Mikaela Shiffrin.

Not really a meet but more of an encounter. Many years ago, I met up with a good friend from HS, Bob, in NYC., As we walked down the street, not particularly paying attention, my friend almost bumps into and almost pushes an older gentleman into the street and passing traffic. The older gentleman had two very large men with him. Turns put the older fellow was Aristotle Onassis. Can't begin to imagine what would have happened if Bob had pushed Onassis into traffic. I don't think it would have been a very good day for Bob.

Speaking of Youngstown, my dad’s uncle would visit the underground casinos. He befriended a young Dean Martin who was a dealer. They would speak to each other in Italian and devised a way to skim some $, which they would split. They became good friends with Dean staying at my grandmother’s house on the occasion when snow made the drive to Steubenville dangerous.

Before Dean got big, he sent my dad’s uncle a letter asking him to manage come out to California and be his manager. My dad’s uncle chalked it up to crazy talk and blew him off.

First of all, Bob Dole? Yogi Berra? how old are you? Second, I am a huge Phil Rizzuto fan. I used to listen to him call games on the radio when I was growing up in upstate NY. (I was too young to see him play.) I did buy an autographed ball a few years ago in Cooperstown.

I'm 74 about to turn 75. Is that old enough? I'm so old lifetime guarantees don't impress me. I grew up with the Yankees. I remember Mel Allen doing the games. I thought Red Barber was terrible. My favorite broadcast team was Rizzuto, White and Messer.
