Penn State football celebrities I have met and shaken hands with include Ki-Jana Carter, Blair Thomas, Tom Brady, and Sue Paterno. I managed to get a photo with each of them except Ki-Jana.

As an undergrad I worked in the Smeal College computer labs, and Kyle Brady came in there sometimes. I’m a hefty 6’4” guy and I felt diminutive in his presence.

I walked past LaVar outside The Corner Room in 1999, late in the evening of the day we’d lost that heartbreaker to Minnesota :( I was not about to try and speak to him on that day.

And I once honked and waved at JoePa as I drove past him on College Avenue. He gave me a brief puzzled “should I know this guy?” kind of glance.

When I was 13, we had a snow day (Blizzard of 78) and my friends and I were playing touch football on the street in front of the house in the snow. Along comes a 4 wheeler, and I recognize the adult driving it as Mike Schmidt. He had his son with him (kid must have been 3 or 4 at the time). They stopped and kid played football with the "big kids", which he enjoyed. Schmidt signed some autographs, took some photos (my friend Mike Dempsey still has the photo), and then went on his way. Schmidt had a reputation of being bristly, but he was very nice to us.

I used to wash the car of 76er Darryl Dawkins. It was after he got drafted out of HS and he had a 1975 blue Ford Thunderbird. I have told the story of how he gave us money ontime, because he knew we wanted to go to a nearby arcade, and he gave us about $5 worth of quarters to go and play video games. Again, very nice guy.

Ran into Charles Barkley and his (I believe) now wife on South Street. He was a bit tips (as was she) but they were both nice.

Garry Maddox once cut in line in front of me, getting popcorn, at the movie theater. He realized what he had done and he apologized and let me and my mom get popcorn first.

Saw Tiger at Baltusrol the year Phil won it (PGA?). He was walking back to courtesy car, and one person in our group said "Holy crap, he is a bigger dude than he looks on TV". Tiger just smiled and did one of those bicep moves (this way to the beach) and kept on walking. At this time Tiger was in his late 20's or early 30's. He was built like an outside linebacker.

Ran into Joe in Dec 1986 outside Pattee. Almost walked directly into him as I was focussed on something else. I apologized and he asked me how my exams went - I said "OK" He said "Your parents are not going to be happy with OK". He was correct - they were not.

Saw Lauryn HIll at a drug store in Miami. She did not appear happy at that time, so I did not engage in conversation.

In 1994, my wife was 7 months pregnant and I had to take a business trip. On the return, I was waiting for my bags at the luggage carousel. I look over, and I see a pretty girl who looks really familiar. It was Cindy Crawford. We make some small talk, she’s in town to visit her sister, etc. She was very nice.

I ask if Cindy would sign an autograph for my pregnant wife and she cheerfully does. I come home and tell my wife the story, with the autograph for good measure. My wife says, “Well how did she look?”

Thinking very quickly, I said, “Oh she’s too skinny.” Saved my bacon that day.

Met Dan Marino at a OJ McDuffie "Catch 81" fundraising event at Heron Bay Marriott some years back. My son and I were hoping to see KiJana and OJ there. Marino came rolling up in a golf cart (someone else was driving), and was too drunk to give my son an autograph (he came off as a bit of an a-hole under the influence)

Met KiJana at a bar in Ft Lauderdale, and also for a business interaction at JM Lexus in Margate.

Waiting in line to board a plane at Newark, passengers coming off the plane I was about to board included Olivia Wilde. There were kids with her (I assume hers?), one of which wasn't watching where he was walking and bumped into one of my kids. She just gives me a blank stare, no "oh sorry" or any other verbal exchange and keeps walking.

A couple months ago almost literally ran into Lex Luger (now wheelchair bound) at an airport terminal convenience store. i was walking around a T-shirt kiosk and he was right there, coming the other direction. I said "sorry" or "hi" (can't remember).

Bob Dole was ok (we were interviewing him and his admin was going to take my office), but not my best.

That goes to…Joe DiMaggio. It’s 1983, I’m in college, and my uncle Charlie who was with the dodgers calls to says he has tix to every game of the o’s Phil’s series. We go to game 4 in Philly and end up in the nosebleeds. My dad made a smartass comment about it to Charlie. So the next day we show up and Charlie says to follow him. We end up in the owners club at the vet (table seating!), and my buddy and I are on the end. There’s a table empty next to us for a while, then a bit of a commotion as Mr coffee himself sits down. Buddys dad says to ask him for his autograph but we don’t want to invade his privacy. About the 7th inning he gets up to leave, strolls over to our table, greets Charlie who everybody knows, and says, “who are these two fine young men?” Nice chat, but didn’t get the autograph.

lots of other baseball guys through Charlie - brooks and frank robinson, Lou Brock, enos slaughter, Bob Gibson, Billy Martin, Ricky Henderson - but DiMaggio tops the list

I don't travel in the same circles as many of you so all of mine are look-up obscure:
Victoria Jackson at an airport; I didn't interact with her but she seemed angry in general
Donny Most at a bar in Bethlehem; he was a dick
Dan Plesac at a sporting goods store in Brown Deer, WI; seemed like a genuine nice guy
How big was Dan Plesac? I watch Baseball Night in America a lot and he absolutely dwarfs almost everyone on there. Google says he’s 6’5”. Looks even bigger than that

Sold a Christmas Tree off our Boy Scout lot to Lionel “The Train” Hollins. He and his lady were duded up in a really nice Lincoln. He was a quick shopper - noticed a nice, tall Douglas Fir (our most expensive offering with the softest needles) and was out of there quick.

Blue Spruces were a ***** - so prickly they’d put holes in your glove and coat.

For @EricStratton-RushChairman, I met Morgan Fairchild on the Hill when she came up to testify on some bill re: entertainment. You would not have been disappointed - tiny, but stacked and gorgeous. You can’t believe someone can be that hot in real life.

Quentin Tarantino had to come back to his seat in 1st to grab his Variety magazine as I was deplaning. I stopped and he said “thanks man” in his funny voice. So I walked out behind him and got into a bunch of paparazzi shots

Went to a Kennedy Wedding - that was off the chain. John John had just died so didn’t see him, but Caroline was a table over and Teddy 2 tables over. Got into a conversation with Sargent Shriver, George Plimpton and Jamie Wyeth (of the Wyeth artist family from Kennett Square) about Pele of all people. George Plimpton of course could trump anyone’s story as he met everyone back in the day. After I told my story he said, “oh, he’s a delightful man”. Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith was incredibly nice. We talked about Ireland as she had just finished her term as Ambassador. She told a funny story about having to hide the family pictures in the Embassy Residence before hosting groups of American college kids visiting as they’d try to steal them

Met Pele trying to get his autograph as an 8 year old after a Cosmos game - his limo window rose in my face. Not delightful

Yes and no. I spent a couple of years in early 1970s in the Lancaster Area (Willow Street and Middletown, which is kind of close).

Then, we moved outside of Philly. I washed Dawkin's car the summer after he was drafted (1975) and before training camp. The Sixers used to have their camp in Lancaster (Frankllin and Marshall?), but Dawkins lived across the street from me.

My dad finagled a LOT of sweet tickets through his job over the years. Once we were sitting a few seats behind home plate at an Orioles game, when around the 6th inning or so an attractive woman came down the aisle with two young kids and sat in front of us.

My dad was sure she was some random mom sneaking her kids into the “good seats” for the end of the game and they’d soon be kicked out. I immediately recognized her though as Ashley Judd. She’d been sitting with Cal Ripken Jr’s wife in their suite and then decided to take the Ripken kids down to sit where they’d get a close up look at their dad at bat.

I had to quietly clue my dad in to who she was.

Side note — I still clearly recall the pleasant view when Ms Judd stood up in front of us for the 7th inning stretch :)

I dated Morgan Fairchild….yeah, that’s the ticket.
Now there's something you don't see every day in back to back posts. Finagled and Flanagan.

Vince Papale was a member of my club for a while - same time as Doug Pedersen. Yeah, he has a hard time believing people don't know who he is.
I saw him at an Apple store in the Philly area and the 20 something girl asked him his name and he says "You don't know me? I am Vince Papale". She just shrugged and walked away.

BTW - went to high school with his son Skip (Forget his given name). Skip was two years behind me, but was dating a girl from our class. Good on him. She drove him-and then he drove her.

I met Bob Costas at the Breakers in PB. Was there for an event and tacked on a few days after. Was at the beach and our group decided to have lunch at one of the hotel's beachfront restaurants. At the time, all of the staff wore robin egg blue polo shirts. So we get to the restaurant and there is a guy at the door wearing a pale blue polo. I assume he is a staffer. I ask him if we can get a table for 4. He turns around looks at me and says in his very recognizable voice that he is waiting for one also. I didn't really recognize him until I heard the voice. We both laughed. I saw him two other times that weekend and just nodded.

Joe - I was living at the old Nittany Halls early '80's one and would see Joe walk to his offices at Greenberg. One day I was playing catch (baseball) with a buddy. Ball got away from me, rolled down to the street. Joe is walking up the sidewalk. I see him, so I pick up the ball throw a strike to my buddy about 30 yards away. Joe said "nice throw...how are your grades?"

Tony Dungy in a hotel elevator NYC. Was there for a weekend getaway. He was staying at the same hotel for the SNF show. Saw him the next morning at breakfast also. He was super nice.

Franco Harris at a Nebraska tailgate at Lincoln early 2000's before Nebraska was in the Big 10. Met one of his college buddies the night before (not a football player), had some drinks with him and he asked if I wanted to go to Franco's tailgate the next day. Also met Lydell Mitchell there. Both were very friendly.

Lou Holtz, also at The Breakers, different event. During the Penn State dark ages so I asked him if Joe should retire and he emphatically said no.

Short encounters with Colin Powell, Alan Greenspan, James Carville, Ron Insana, and the great Joe DeNardo of Pittsburgh weather fame.

I have led a fortunately great life....grew up between Nazareth and Northampton....so I met Mario and his family at my Grandparent's country hotel, school in Atlanta and had jobs with both the Braves and Falcons....but the best was doing financial work for the person in charge of security for the Brown-Houston Corp, yes Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston. Many stories during those years and many music artists. I must say they were great toward my kids despite numerous stories from detractors.

His son is Vinny. Probably a Jr. His son roomed with Troy Reeder at UD.

This will make some of the Franklin haters happy. Papale hates Franklin. As soon as I said I was a psu fan he went off on Franklin. Lol

The meeting most important to us individually, may mean absolutely nothing to others.

notable for me, “Green Bar Bill” and Dr E Urner Goodman…..

If I don't count people, I met due to access to PSU football or from autograph session setup by the Pirates or Steelers. Probably my top one was back in 1997. Played hockey with Garth Brooks for a few hours and then let him drive the Zamboni when we were done. Good dude.

I sat in a box at a State College Spikes game with Joe Pantoliano. I don't remember who rented the box or why he was in State College.

Met Roger Kingdom (Gold Medalist '84 and '88) around 87-88 at a softball field in New Eagle, PA. He was dating a girl from my town then.

Knew Fred Cox, he came back home and was a Chiropractor. Met Joe Montana a couple of times. Graduated with Scott Zolak.

It wasn't unusual for ex-Penguins to play pick up hockey around Pittsburgh at different places and played with several of them.

Roger Staubach - met him when I was a kid around 1990 or so. Talked to him for a good while about the Cowboys (I was a fan) and he we both talked about how excited we were about the future of the team. We were both right. Extremely nice guy.

Mike Ditka - saw him in Vegas. He was a bit drunk I think. I know I was a bit drunk. Just gave him a "hey coach!" and he smiled and waved.

Len Elmore - played hoops at Maryland and in the NBA, and did college hoops broadcasts for ESPN. He sat by me at an airport bar and we had a couple of beers and talked college hoops. Nice guy.

Barack Obama - he came into the irish bar I was drinking at on St Patrick's Day while he was President. Had a bit of a crowd around him, so I didn't get to talk to him.

John Daly - seen him and talked to him a couple of times at Hooters in Augusta during Masters week. Nice guy. Sadly, I believe they tore down that Hooters this past year.

Allen Iverson - he was drinking by himself in a hotel bar in Atlanta one afternoon. Just gave him a quiet, "hey AI", and he did a little half wave. Didn't seem to want to be bothered.

It seems I'm in bars a lot...

Different kid. The kid I am thinking of would have graduated HS in 1984. I think Papale may have been married (or with someone) and then found a younger chick and had a family with her.

From memory:

Met Joe, Franny and yes, Sandusky at age 8. Dad was a donor/honorary coach.
Also met Franco who spoke at one of our sports banquets with Dallas Green.
Was a tutor for Leroy Thompson.
Met most of the the football team then when working in the PSU SID office during college years.
Hung out with Trey Bauer on two occassions and ended up in frats each time and almost got in a fight with Ed Boone which was scary.

Partied with Michigan basketball Coach Steve Fischer at the Victors Club tailgate before the '94 game, thank you Kerry and Bobby. Coach Fischer gave us four seats for midnight madness that night behind the bench and we went in the lockerroom afterwards. Nice guy. My dad's uncle was the President of the Victor's Club.

Sat with Joe during the first half of a basketball game in Rec Hall. The guy knew everyone I had ever met or someone who knew someone I know it seemed. Unreal memory. My roommate's employer (a donor) from Bellefonte sat on the other side of him.

Sid Bream was the camp counselor on my floor at a baseball camp. Played poker with him.

Had conversations with the following: Governor Thornburgh, Budd Dwyer, my boss Robert Jubelirer, and dozens and dozens of state senators and house members during my first job in the PA Senate after interning summers. Several in our Senate class are now PA reps.

Was in two movies as an extra. One involved Eddie Murphy and was filmed at the PA Senate, specifically at the old House offices. I played a Senate staffer, next to him in the cocktail part scene. Only spoke to Eddie for about a minute when he asked if he looked okay and I said, you look great, wish I knew the story. He said you look official and I'm faking it. Had a more in-depth conversation over lunch with Grant Shaud (Murphy Brown show) who if I recall correctly said he was from the Philly area. Nice guy and seemed normal enough. We talked about Harrisburg restaurants. Only saw Joe Don Baker who reportedly sent a tranny to Eddie's trailer during filming.

Met Bob Huggins who might have been drunk at practice. Met basketball/football/soccer/lacrosse coaches at UCinncinati, University of San Francisco, Saint Mary's College of California, University of Tennessee, Wake Forest, Duke, NC State, and UNC -- all were clients of the agency where I worked. Was hired by another university client to start a Heisman campaign for a then unknown Cornell University QB named...Ricky Rahne.

Took a subway ride in DC with Julian Bond and reminisced about his last visit to PSU.

Discussed journalism ethics with Carl Bernstein when he visited PSU and I had to write a paper for Journ class.

Met Coach K a few times. Helped to write Coach K's press release when Joe died. Stood next to him while he delivered 'a night before UNC game speech' in Kville - one of my greatest memories. That and standing next to him outside the locker room of the Greensboro Coliseum while he watched Tommy Amaker (former Duke player and then Seton Hall coach) win his first NCAA tourney game. I remember thinking Coach K was more moved by that than his own game set to tip off in a few minutes.

Duke football coach David Cutcliffe and I often talked at the local Harris Teeter. He thought the world of PSU football.

Met Bill Raftery during March Madness in the press area under the Pit in Memphis. He was holding court with Hoops Weiss whom I would later drink beers with at another tournament venue, thanks to Duke. Bill was funny as hell. Hoops knew everything about college basketball. Really respected those guys plus you could tell no one liked the Packer/Bernstein show at the time which made it even more interesting on press row.

Was also on the floor at the Pit for the old Metro Conference men's basketball championship when Kenyon Martin broke his leg right in front of me. That was bizarre. Even more bizarre after that game I watched John Calipari become the Memphis head coach and the extremely old donors all shuffled in to shake his hand. Seemed shady as sht at the time since Memphis had just played.

Worked summers in high school with one of the members of the band called The Ocean Blue from Hershey. I really liked that band and have played their songs on Spotify.

Sat behind Tom Hanks and Yakov Smirnoff during Phil Rizzuto Day at Yankee Stadium. Tom accidentally poured part of a beer on me as our group and his got somewhat hammered. To our right was George Steinbrenner's sons in the box. George provided our tickets to my hs baseball coach who is a well-known scout (is now in the MLB scouts HOF, who knew there was such a thing)

Met and worked in the same firm as Governor James Hunt RIP, a Mt. Rushmore figure here in NC. His chief of staff and I are our friends. I met Governor Hunt completely by accident on the first day in NC. He was doing an economic development announcement with the media and I accidentally got in his way in the State House. I apologized and said "It's great to see you Governor. I've been in NC for four hours and I've gotten to meet the Governor." He said 'welcome to North Carolina." Years later, he said he remembered our meeting. He might have. Like Joe, he had a rare memory for details and people.

Saw Ty Howle a couple of years ago while waiting for a flight from Raleigh to Newark>Greece. We talked about prospects and some of the local NC kids. Really friendly.

In Greece, met Scott Kelly, Senator Mark Kelly's (Arizona) identical twin brother. Both were astronauts and well-known but Scott is the funnier one according to him. He is pretty funny btw.

For high school kids just singing and starting out - she was just a good friend. She went to Long Beach State and met her husband - Lou Gordon and he helped put the distinctive voices together as 'the Fifth Dimension' - have seen her several times since in Vegas and alumni events.

This won’t be the coolest celebrity encounter, but it stood out to me because of how random it was

In the early 2000’s, I was in the super small southern Illinois town of Mcleansboro. One Sunday afternoon, I go to the hospital to visit my friends grandmother. It was the typical small town hospital. One floor, not much to it. As I turned the corner, I see a man in a suit who stood out because he looked pretty tall in person. It was Jerry Sloan, Hall of fame coach of the Utah Jazz. I was so shocked to see him standing there! No one else was around and I think he noticed my surprise. We started talking and come to find out, that was his hometown. Total class act and down to earth.

Vince and Pedersen are both members where I work a couple of days a week. Vince isn't himself (at all). He's going through some rough stuff according to Janet.
