Hadn't seen it posted here. Former Hawkeye QB under Hayden Fry, Ryan Driscoll passed away while working out on a treadmill. Ryan was a very young man just 45 yr's old. RIP Hawkeye....
I recall he was a fairly heralded recruit, out of CR I think?Hayden screwed him over. He was way better than Matt Sherman.
Wasn't this about 8 years ago?
Jees, good catch. It came up on my phone today. It didn't say anything about being in 2018 on there. I guess I didn't remember hearing about it at the time. apologies. Carry on with berating players and coaches fellow posters....Wasn't this about 8 years ago?
Yep, here's the obit.Ryan died in 2018....
Yep, that's what it said when I just googled it. It came up on my phone this morning and didn't say anything about the date. Kind of crazy it would pop up now??Ryan died in 2018....
Omg- god bless him and his family… that’s just awful news to hear. Live each day like it’s your last… a perfect example of a man taken too early in his lifeHadn't seen it posted here. Well, when the coach tells you to go in and you say no thanks, that will impact your playing timeWhat happened that kept him off the field for Iowa? A lot of fans were very happy when he signed in high school.
I definitely don't remember that being reported.Well, when the coach tells you to go in and you say no thanks, that will impact your playing time
Linn-Mar in MarionI recall he was a fairly heralded recruit, out of CR I think?
How old are you?Mentioned this in a thread several months ago. Played bb with Ryan’s dad Pat, back in 65-66. He also passed way too soon. Sad situation for all involved needless to say.
It was in the 96 season.I definitely don't remember that being reported.
Thanks. Had a few friends in college who were Linn-Mar Lions. A couple of decades earlier.Linn-Mar in Marion

Matt Sherman happenedWhat happened that kept him off the field for Iowa? A lot of fans were very happy when he signed in high school.
Okay, I remember Sherman playing. A decent QB, so I suppose Driscoll did not win the job.Matt Sherman happened
His playing time would have been reported...... just not like how it happened. Sort of like a player (not referring to Ryan) getting into a fight downtown and the coach reporting it was because he was sticking up for his teammates. When actually the fight was because he was drunk and eating french fries off a people's tray.I definitely don't remember that being reported.
There was a story done about how great his daughter is doing at City in bball the other day. Guessing that's why articles about him starting coming up.

I believe Driscoll had some drama in high school. Out 1 night he got into a fight and the guy jumped on the hood of his car. Ryan drove out onto the interstate with him on the hood and the guy flew off and died, I believe. The details could be off but something like that. Maybe someone else closer can elaborate.
Matt Sherman happened
Was def a big recruit. He was listed as one of the top five drop-back passers in the country by The Sporting News, was a high school all-American by Street & Smith's.Before his shoulder injury, from which he was never the same, Driscoll was the superior QB. That's why he won the job to start the 1994 season. It was the days before online recruiting services, so a lot of folks probably don't remember, but coming out of Linn-Mar, Driscoll was one of the top-rated high school QBs in the country. Those 1989 and 1990 Linn-Mar teams were great!
Yes after he broke his collarbone midway through the 94, I recall we struggled to find a healthy QB. The names I recall were Jefferson Bates, Corby Smith, Mike Duprey and Matt Sherman and all were banged up. I think Bates & Smith got hurt in maybe the same quarter. Duprey started a couple and then Sherman was finally healthy enough and started the rest of the year and moving forward. I remember hearing Driscoll struggled throwing after that injury. It's sad but losing him was sadder.
