Hadn't seen it posted here. Former Hawkeye QB under Hayden Fry, Ryan Driscoll passed away while working out on a treadmill. Ryan was a very young man just 45 yr's old. RIP Hawkeye....
Omg- god bless him and his family… that’s just awful news to hear. Live each day like it’s your last… a perfect example of a man taken too early in his life

What happened that kept him off the field for Iowa? A lot of fans were very happy when he signed in high school.

Mentioned this in a thread several months ago. Played bb with Ryan’s dad Pat, back in 65-66. He also passed way too soon. Sad situation for all involved needless to say.

You must be behind by a few years.

I graduated high school in 1999 and will turn 45 this summer.

I believe Driscoll had some drama in high school. Out 1 night he got into a fight and the guy jumped on the hood of his car. Ryan drove out onto the interstate with him on the hood and the guy flew off and died, I believe. The details could be off but something like that. Maybe someone else closer can elaborate.

I definitely don't remember that being reported.
His playing time would have been reported...... just not like how it happened. Sort of like a player (not referring to Ryan) getting into a fight downtown and the coach reporting it was because he was sticking up for his teammates. When actually the fight was because he was drunk and eating french fries off a people's tray.

Driscoll wasn't driving the car. He was in the passenger seats of his dad's car, that was being driven by a friend. Four Linn-Mar athletes had gotten into some trouble with a group at a gas station that used to be in downtown Cedar Rapids. One of them jumped onto the hood when they left and refused to get off. They drove onto I-380 N, exited and then back onto the interstate. Eventually, Driscoll reached over and jerked the wheel, causing the car to swerve into the median and roll over. The man on the hood was crushed and killed. It was a big deal, as Driscoll was already one of the top QB recruits in the Midwest. A LOT of people felt like he was given preferential treatment for his status when he received a slap on the wrist.

Matt Sherman happened

Before his shoulder injury, from which he was never the same, Driscoll was the superior QB. That's why he won the job to start the 1994 season. It was the days before online recruiting services, so a lot of folks probably don't remember, but coming out of Linn-Mar, Driscoll was one of the top-rated high school QBs in the country. Those 1989 and 1990 Linn-Mar teams were great!

Was def a big recruit. He was listed as one of the top five drop-back passers in the country by The Sporting News, was a high school all-American by Street & Smith's.

Yes after he broke his collarbone midway through the 94, I recall we struggled to find a healthy QB. The names I recall were Jefferson Bates, Corby Smith, Mike Duprey and Matt Sherman and all were banged up. I think Bates & Smith got hurt in maybe the same quarter. Duprey started a couple and then Sherman was finally healthy enough and started the rest of the year and moving forward. I remember hearing Driscoll struggled throwing after that injury. It's sad but losing him was sadder.

Indeed. He was never the same. I was told that from a teammate of his. Regardless, he was loved on the team and very popular.
