If you only looked at the team score, you'd think it was a complete annihilation and destruction of Ohio State by Penn State. However, every close match went Penn State's way so it was a little closer than the score appears. While anOSU had 3 starters out, the only one that might have made a difference was Cannon. (Before the hyperpartisans start yelling at me, I'd still pick Duke to win. Just not by Fall.)

I hesitated even writing this one up because it would be difficult to pick anyone besides Cole Mirasola. But you get two picks and this was against the #2 team so here we go:

125 - Luke Lilledahl
The meet started with the only 1 vs 2 match of the night. There actually was a decent amount of action for a 1-1 match going into SV. Luke looked sharp and Bouzakis faded (this is going be a problem in the tournaments) with Luke getting the clutch TD to win in SV.

133 - Marcus Blaze
Another marquee matchup featuring two undefeated wrestlers. This one didn't have a lot of action and could have gone either way. Icy veins Blaze executed a must have reversal in TB to negate Davino's RT advantage to win.

141 - Jesse Mendez
A rare appearance of the opposition on these surveys but credit to anOSU's Jesse Mendez. M-1 tank meets Scooter. Mendez is legitimate competition to Psycho for the Hodge.

149 - Shayne Van Ness
SVN takes care of business with a TF against one of aOSU's backups.

157 - PJ Duke
Duke could've settled for a TF but went for the pin and got it against another backup.

165 - Mitchell Mesenbrink
Mitch continues his unblemished bonus streak with a MD against Gallagher. As I mentioned in the pbp thread, Gallagher has only given up 1 TF (and 0 falls) in 32 career losses.

174 - Levi Haines
Levi also took care of business with a TF against the 3rd and final aOSU backup of the night.

184 - Rocco Welsh
This one wins the wild match of the night award. Welsh did not look good for most of the match with Fishback getting to his leg multiple times including the first TD of the match. However, Rocco clutched up and snatched victory out of the dentures of defeat with two late TDs to win it 7-6.

197 - Josh Barr
Josh also continued his unblemished bonus streak this season with a MD of Geog. Josh is pretty good and like Messenbrink, makes it look easy.

Heavy - Cole Mirasola
Like I said earlier, how can you not pick Cole? While the score was close, Cole looked like the better wrestler all match and gets the big upset win against Feldman in SV. He was so close against Ghadiali and Ferrari, it was awesome to see him break through and get the dub!

@Cali_Nittany1 impressed me most by doing the pbp for the Iowa match on the Iowa board since their fans were checked out.

Mirasola. As far as wrestling skill and gas tank, he's easily a top-5 HWY as a RS-freshman. He probably gets to the legs of his opponents more than any heavy in the country, but his finishing rate is really low; IMO a combination of pure horsepower and fear that he'll get laid on by one of these 240lbs+ monsters. If he's able to put on 15lbs, he's going to be a problem in two years.

Speaking of being checked out, did you see all the empty seats at Carver last night? Don’t they usually fill the place?

I got a chuckle about an exchange between Tim Johnson and his broadcast partner during the Ryder Block match. Johnson was saying nice things about Block and finished with: “He’s a really solid wrestler. Showing that he belongs in the Iowa lineup.”

The 2d guy immediately followed with: “Yeah, having dropped 4 of his last 6 bouts, Ryder Block is looking for that signature win …. Block is 3 and 5 against ranked opponents this season.” 😂😂😂

He belongs in this Iowa lineup indeed!

PS: I picked Luke and Cole for the poll. Both confidently controlled their matches against dangerous opponents.

Write in... Davis did not fill his sock up with batteries and whack his opponent upside the noggin. He was a gentleman.
Like Tupac in Soon as I Get Home:

Late night reminiscin', everybody's quiet
I think something's in the air, prepare for the riot
It's padlocks in my socks, steel from the bed springs
I touch 'em with thug love and then let they heads ring

All those fans who left before heavy weight missed a great win by cole. What a moment for him he was pumped and so was the team
Something I never understood. If you are going to pay the money for the tickets, get up off the couch, endure the parking and inconvenience; the reality of sitting in traffic after the event is a rite of passage.

This is something that has stuck with me my whole life, a lesson learned more than 50 years ago.

The Steelers were playing the Raiders, we were winning in the 4th and a good number of fans hit the exits, just to save the half hour of gridlock afterwards. My dad who I would lose only a handful of years later, sat at my side.

Well the Raiders scored late to take the lead and it seemed the Steelers were still just "1 brick shy of a load". Minutes later I got a glimpse of the immaculate reception while standing on my seat struggling to see over and between the adult heads in front of me. One of the more iconic moments of my whole life. Exiting the stadium amongst the masses who were all dumbstruck with emotion and elation was also a wonder.

I remain amazed how many left, missing both of the final 2 scores. They all certainly got home early. Likewise, I suspect most have maintained a lie for the rest of their lives, about how they too saw the most iconic play in NFL history.

Come on fans watch the whole match and more importantly show our heavyweights the respect they deserve for their dedication and hard work !!!!

Cool story Googles.
When you responded to the comment about Cole’s match I was sure you were going to say thank goodness Cael didn’t listen to me saying we need to bring in a heavyweight, because Cole isn’t a heavyweight. 😉

If he is 240 or better in 2 years, 2 titles is very likely.

Anybody who leaves early should have their tickets checked on the way out, and revoked on a 2nd offense.

I'd give grace to the first in case of real emergency, or you gave your ticket to a friend who left early. But after that, too many people waiting for tickets who would stay until the end.

What's really amazing about what Cole did was that he got robbed of a takedown earlier in the match. The replay clearly showed he had him, the announcers said he had him but somehow the refs decided to make Cole have to beat him twice. Psychologically that can destroy you when you're a big underdog. Cole could have lost and everybody would be talking about how he really won but he was robbed. He obviously wanted no part of a moral victory and sucked it up and got the job done twice, not many guys have that kind of fortitude.

TDs were 25-5 with Mendez getting 4 of Ohio State’s 5 and Fishbait getting the other one as Rocco came out of his stance and walked into it.

regardless of some close matches, this dual meet was completely one sided
An example, although Luke went to overtime, he never looked threatened. The playbook seems to be let OSU tire themselves out then wait to attack. Seemed like an effective book

I voted for Marcus Blaze. Barring a massive upset against Princeton he’ll have run the table in the regular season as a true freshman.

That’s an accomplishment that three of our recent true freshman studs who all came in as #1 in their class were unable to match. That’d be Mark Hall, Lightning Luke, and PJ Duke. I realize it’s all about the postseason, but that’d be an impressive feat by Marcus imo.

While I don’t have the weights of his opponents at the Black Knight Invitational, Cole has wrestled five wrestlers over 240 this year.

#24 Juan Mora 255.6 (W 5-2)
Nate Schon 241.2 (W 10-2)
#7 Nathan Taylor 274.8 (L 2-7)
# 21 Hunter Catka 261.0 (W 4-2)
Joey Schneck 278.4 (WBF 3:56)

Other ranked wrestlers that Cole has wrestled this year.

#15 Brady Colbert unknown (W 10-6)
#10 Christian Carroll 231.0 (L 4-10)
#5 Ben Kueter 238.0 (W 4-3)
#4 A.J. Ferrari 227.6 (L 1-2)
# 5 Taye Ghadiali 233.8 (L 1-4)
# 3 Nick Feldman 236.0 (W 4-1 sv)

This season, Cole has been ranked as high as #10 and as low as #15. His highest weight has been 229.0 and his lowest has been 225.6. Every one of Cole’s losses has been to someone ranked higher. Only one of those losses was to someone over 240.

Last year Cole was 221.9 when he lost 3-10 to #9 Nick Feldman who weighed 233.2. Cole weighed 219.6 two days later when he lost 0-4 to #19 Luke Luffman who weighed 259.6.

Perhaps, the weight and strength aren’t as big of an issue as some think. Perhaps it’s more about the quality of the opponent and Cole’s experience. I do think that Cole will continue to improve the more time he is in both the mat and weight rooms.

Iowa talks about closing the gap. Penn State does not just close the gap, they reverse the damn outcome.
