I agree. We still are returning 6 guys who play a lot plus jirek. I know guys leave in portal but I just don’t see any one of them. Just like football this year it’s how do you replace Kaleb Johnson. You don’t with one player. Depending on what BM does if a portal or freshman he will split minutes with combs instead of 38-40min a game with stirtz. McCollum is a good enough coach he knows how to adapt and play to the roster he has (drake last year). I have confidence with his eye for talent he will bring someone in, as name mentioned before with Keaton Wagner at ILL McCollum most likely has him at drake if ILL doesn’t offer. But at his first presser McCollum said how much he depends on and coaches his PG and high expectations he holds them to. With his track record and history I’m not going to be that guy betting against McCollum going into next year
No doubt. I think any high level player would want to be on the court for 40 minutes/gm and have the ball in his hands 90% of the time. All these guys want is to show their skills and I think Ben’s offense will definitely do that for a point guard.Not sure why you say that. Found an interesting interview with BM where he is discussing recruitment and what he's looking for in a PG. Sounds like he ideally wants to get a HS guy he can develop and one from the portal. He also indicated things are so fluid that you never know who might be available.
I think we are seeing how important a legit PG is to have. It was only said a million times under Fran.
Haven't had a chance to listen but this makes total sense. Combs obviously steps in as the veteran and as this season he can help at either position in the backcourt. We seem well setup if Ben can bring in a portal point and a high school point to develop.
Koch, Sage, Howard, Combs, Manyawu, Folguieras -- will all be back, and they have a lot of experience. Then there's Thompson, Jirak, and Matteoni too. Yes, more size would be helpful, but an outstanding PG is key. Ben knows all that, and I'm confident he'll find what he needs to keep Iowa among the top teams in the BIG and in the country.

Not really. I think you are severely underestimating the talent Iowa will have returning and the track record that says Ben McCollom wins, period.
Next year we begin to see how Ben is going to be able to recruit for Iowa,... Should be interesting.
Just a friendly reminder that in this day and age, it's never a guarantee that everyone who can come back actually does come back. The portal is always there. That said, with the way McCollum emphasizes culture fit with the guys he recruits, I would be somewhat surprised to see anyone leave. But I've been surprised before. You never know when a guy is going to see a better opportunity, either financially or athletically, at another school.
So to be clear, I'm not disagreeing with anything you've said. I've just learned to never assume anything, and I urge others to do the same.

McCollum brought him in this summer. He committed and decommitted within a two week span.

Indeed. A couple of us have pointed out the quality depth we have returning. In my post I didn't mention Isaia Howard. When he transferred Ben said "Isaia Howard is a Big Ten wing". Just a real sparkplug off the bench and I enjoy watching him. We have a real talent coming in behind him in Harris who looks to play the same kind of role only eventually start.
If Ben can bring in a point guard from the portal who can play right away then we have the luxury of having the veteran Kael Combs as a third guard who can steady the ship at the point or slide over to the wing when we play small ball and Sage the emerging star on this team plays up front. I like where this looks headed.
If we can’t afford a high school kid how do you expect Ben to ante up for a great pg out of the transfer portal. We went thru that chapter last year. We want to challenge for a title (big ten or nationally got to pay up.

Just buy the best guard in CBB next year along with a couple decent-sized forwards and we're set.
Opportunity is often in the eye of the beholder. Anyone who thinks it isn’t possible hasn’t been paying attention to college sports the past few years.
Let’s concentrate on this season as they’ve won 5 out of the last 6 and blew it against MD but a win tomorrow could erase that loss! Go Hawks!
This isn’t meant as snark, but are we at the same level as Fran? I never understood the let’s give a basketball coach years to turn things around….if the coach can recruit top players it’s a quick turnaround
i will say that Iowa is playing a more well rounded style compared to Fran but if Ben can’t recruit then it’s just average results in a different way

We do not need a 7 footer unless they are very athletic but even a 6'9" jumper for rebounding and blocking and changing shots would be great and especially if they can score.
I think with BM's motion offense a more mobile 6'9 type guy is better than a 3 inch taller guy
Well, if you can get two guys to play Stirtz's 40 minutes and get 15-20 pts between them (combs and one other guy) and then if 5 other guys score 3 more pts per game than this year, then that adds up to 25 - 30 pts. Done
