Maybe stop listening to the stations that promote it. There is a lot of good music being done today.
I try to get out a few times a month to hear live music. In a small beach town, it's limited. It is either bro-country (which is really bad usually), Blues (which is hit or miss), or today's "Rock" which features - go figure - cover songs from bands like Kansas, Journey, Stones, etc. and some of their original stuff which no one wants to hear. Not even the band's contemporaries in the audience want to hear it. They want to hear Neil Diamond and Boston and Styx and Zep and Billy Joel. They want to have a good time.

There is a streaming station out of Baltimore that is terrific. WTMD, they play a little of everything but lean towards the new stuff and a lot of 80's new wave. There are streaming stations on all cable and tv formats that have some great new indie stuff. It's so easy to find and again a lot of good stuff out there.

Ok so there have been many music related discussions on here but I don’t think we’ve ever chosen an overall “greatest ever”. So, without further ado, who do you consider the greatest ever musical talent and why? Any genre. Bach to Bad Bunny. Has to be an individual not a group i.e. you can choose Paul McCartney but not the Beetles. Set your own metric on what constitutes “greatest”, just tell us why.

I’m gonna get some crap for this but I’m going with Garth Brooks. Like his music or not, he can sell out arenas anywhere in the world for as many nights as he wants to play. And had been doing it for years. Add in his string of hits and sales and he’s my choice.

#2 on my list is probably Elvis just for the influence he had on so much of the music of our lives. Hard to think what he could have done had he lived longer.

What say youall?
Mike Reid needs to get some consideration.

What is scary is that if you asked 16-20 year olds they would say Taylor swift. Which is insane over Bach, Beethoven etc. they would say who are they?
In fairness, if you asked me at that age I might have said Ozzy.

Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Jesus Christ superstar
Joseph and the technocolor dreamcoats.
Evita
Cats
Phantom of the opera
Sunset blvd
See I knew there’d be a ton of things I hadn’t thought of when I initially threw out Garth and Elvis.

if we could only channel the collective brilliance of this board….

We all have our favorites. If I asked my wife, she'd probably list the Carpenters first, although Sinatra might be a close second. Me, I have so many favorites - Billy Joel, Steely Dan (let's say Donald Fagen if we need a real name, not a group name), even Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield. But - listen to this one and tell me that Glenn Miller wouldn't rank among the absolute greats of the last century.

Was my dad's favorite!

I guess he is the greatest if your bar for 'greatness' is recycling the same five topics over a beat that sounds like a 2018 demo tape.
Look at you go ...

How about Dave Gilmour and/or Roger Waters from Pink Floyd even though they currently hate each other?

"Wish You Were Here" was the #1 album when released in '75, and again last year in 2025 when re-released as a 50th anniversary edition.

I remember listening to Mozart when I was in college and thinking it's been 200 years since he wrote this stuff and people are still listening.

Well Pink Floyd is now to a quarter of that Mozart duration so who knows if people will still be listening to Floyd in another 50 or 100 or 150 years? Just some brilliant stuff that is often overlooked.

Just so you know Paul McCartney is dead. Now if you want to mention Billy Shears Campbell who is excellent in his own right then ok. There's a reason Billy's blood/DNA said he wasn't the father of that German girl whose mother sued and lost. But when it came to him surrendering for a DNA test in a request to prove he was McCartney he refused. Interesting.

But I'll go with Elvis.
