it’s one of the wildest things I’ve ever heard a coach say. And really he didn’t back away from it, he just pretended to. He sort of stuck to it.

Gambling is a serious problem in this sport. Need congress to set ground rules and some investigations to take place.
It is and I wish more coaches had the balls to say it. I think schools should hire guys to monitor that stuff. I know it’s heavily monitored now anyway and casinos hate losing money so they really look for it but it’s a tough thing to stop especially for good players who can hide it well.

Not gonna lie. Have thought that about some of our players. Even more when they came down with gambling charges on the lower level schools and players recently. The bets all revolved on being down a certain amount of points at halftime. Reminds me of a team I know that happens to and then can flip the switch and play totally different in the 2nd half.
I’ve thought the same thing. How do you constantly get down 20 by half and come back and win?

I know for a fact that a lot of UT fans think Gillespie is betting or doing something shady. For weeks now he’s made “mistakes” late in games you just don’t see guys make more than once. That lazy pass that Chandler stole late in our game was one.
This - I thought that whole second half he was on the take...

The problem with that theory is that they would have to be good enough to beat people bad in a 20 minute span at will.
They are not that good. Also, they were unable to mount a comeback at all against Gonzaga, MSU, 'bama, or Vandy.

Maybe that’s why we look so bad? Maybe they are as good as the preseason ranking 😂.

I don't think these morons understand how good these systems are at detecting anomalies in wagering. Not a ton of people are betting on a random UT basketball game. So if all of a sudden a ton of action comes in from a few IP addresses / accounts that don't typically bet a lot, it's easy to spot.
Yes it's easy to spot, but it's not a crime to bet and win big $$ on college sports. Where these dummies went wrong was leaving an electronic trail (email/phone/texts) that enabled to feds to nab them rather easily. You'd have to find a way to avoid trackable conversations with the players.

Coaches also. Don’t let him fool you. I’ve always said Cal was throwing games his last few years here.

Reed and Rob coming off the bench behind a guy who now two years later sits the bench.
Calipari in the opinion of many has and will throw games. I’ve always said I believe he was losing intentionally so the boosters gave in to his demands. Calipari didn’t lose to teams like St. Peter’s and Oakland in tournaments sorry. Just doesn’t do it. He wanted that leverage, to me it was give me what I want or we’ll just go out here and suck.

And of course one that few debate around the Memphis program was his sweet 16 game against Missouri his last year at Memphis. Did things that were just bizarre. He was likely leaving Memphis with a parting gift. Then he took everything incuding the university secretary and a sno cone machine that didn’t belong to him. He wiped that place out 🤣

That Sno Cone machine is notorious. Didn’t belong to him, as asked to return it, and never let that thing go. 🤣

I have said since last year I believe we have one in particular who is. No proof not accusing, it’s just my belief from what I see him routinely do. Things that if you struggle with it, you struggle with it. You don’t turn it off and on. And he turns it off and on.

Back when bets used to be win/lose or margin of victory, it was hard enough to know if guys where guilty. Now, you can bet on just about anything, making it very, very easy for players to do things that are not going to cause their team to lose, or risk losing, but still fulfill a prop bet. And they don't have to risk making the bet themselves, they can have friends or family do it for them. Hey, Uncle Ted, I have a feeling I am going to foul out this next game. Just a hunch.

exactly. it's not moneyline or even spread bets...it's the prop bets that ruin all the fun.

IDK, once you reach a certain age/point in your career, you may lose your filter, or don't care what people think anymore, or about consequences for you personally. I could see Barnes being at that point in his career/life.
you may be right, Barnes does have that vibe about him.

It’s been said already. I don’t think it’s necessary to splatter it around any more. It’s been said by a few and you’d probably be able to guess who it is by the play.

And again not accusing him, have no proof. Could be wrong so it’s just something I’ve noticed around his play, seems abnormal.

idk...i don't think he would say that publicly if he really thought his guys were gambling.
Nah man there’s no way he didn’t say that intentional. He didn’t even back away from it, kept giving reasons why he thinks it lol. Barnes is old and media savvy as they come, he wouldn’t say anything close to that unless he wanted to. It wasn’t a slip up you can tell how he finished it he was legit saying it. Blew my mind.

And Tennessee fans have been saying for a very long time Gillispie seems to be gambling. They said it during our game too. It’s all over X and their boards.

My guess is Barnes believes it might be happening and he’s saying it to shine a light on it in hopes if he is doing it, Gillispie will stop. But this was definitely intentional.

100% I also think this is an indicator Barnes is done. Could easily hurt him recruiting too, what player wants to play for a guy that might call him out for gambling to the media?

Barnes is done and he doesn’t give a sht, he’s not getting back to the final four, he missed his window, and he’s throwing it out there to see if it is happening get it to stop. Might as well, this is it for him anyway, might as well get them playing as good as can if they are gambling.

true...there's definitely a lot of smoke there.
And look it’s Tennessee. They are by far the nastiest ****** in all of college sports. If anyone is gambling it’s them.

that just blurred out S k a n k s?

Some one who works for on3 made sure it would catch that word?

Holy ****ing tin foil hat! The basketball savants otherwise known as Bennies, can discern a missed foul shot from normal or intentional now. And we thought your basketball knowledge was limited to full court press, 2-3 zone, and the coveted 3 point shot.

You hit one of my main concerns with him. Straight off the front of the rim, almost aiming for it. Usually you make the second miss first. Always been that way. Suddenly, seeing a lot of first made second missed. And when he misses it just looks like he’s aiming for the front of the rim. Doesn’t seem to bounce normally, always directed at the front. If you were intentionally doing it, that’s what it would look like.

Not to mention his “balls that get away” when he’s just dribbling normally, or constant non finishes. Again no proof of anything, but his game gets very abnormal. It’s been happening since last season. Then differently when it’s a team like Oklahoma or yesterday he’s got no issues finishing at all.

Dude....this is scary because I texted a good friend of mine during the game about this very thing. I said "he's gotta be shaving". The front end of the free throws was definitely eye-opening. But if you'll recall, late in the game, like very close to the end, he got switched and basically "acted" like he got lost and the guy he was supposed to be guarding went in for a completely uncontested finger roll at the front of the rim. I mean he didn't even attempt to challenge. Would be exactly what it would look like to let someone score without trying to make it look like that. I get it, the counter to that is we were up by enough that you don't want to risk fouling and it being an and-1, but we were actually up like 8 at the time, it wouldn't have made a difference. This REALLY REALLY stood out to me to the point I was checking lines and trying to figure out what range he might have been trying to keep it close. Felt like 6 was the number, but we were 6.5 point dogs, so wouldn't make sense

This article entitled “Cashing all day’: The Instagram star accused of corrupting NCAA hoops” is insightful

An excerpt,
GETTING AN ILLICIT EDGE in NBA betting means persuading one of 450 multimillionaire athletes to risk their livelihoods. College basketball, on the other hand, offers thousands more players who have much less to lose.

To recruit players, prosecutors say, Fairley worked with Blakeney and Jalen Smith, a basketball coach who trained players preparing for the NBA draft….

The recruiters reached out to players on social media or through mutual connections in the basketball community. They offered players $10,000 or more to ensure their team lost by more than expected and failed to cover the first-half or full-game ‘spread’ set by oddsmakers….

The bets rolled in: $100,000 wagered against Nicholls State, $140,000 against Tulane, $150,000 against New Orleans, $242,000 against Saint Louis, $458,000 against North Carolina A&T.

‘Too easy,’ a Robert Morris player texted Smith after a game on which the bettors had wagered $256,000. ‘Might as well do the next one too.’…”

You guys don't know what you're talking about. Barnes did say that but immediately said that he shouldn't have said that . AND that that he hope they wouldn't print what he said , as well as said that he knew his players were not doing it ( throwing points/ games) but that it seemed the way they were lackkaidasical and careless in their play. Lastly, being a Vol fan and being on Volquest everyday, I have not seen one thread about our players throwing the ky game. Yes, there x were some threads about stupid turnovers and such but not throwing points or games, as some on here have suggested.

@lturnervols21 I’d encourage you to read the entire Thread; isn’t completely about UT. UK fans do appreciate Coach Barnes bringing up a touchy subject—even if diffused with humor—that frequently piques our interest….
