He’s going to be below 500 overall when this season ends after 10 years

No coach at any level anywhere gets 10 years to be sub 500 and keep their job
And no coach had an AD actively working against NIL and providing none.

Bill Carmody from Rahway, NJ was at Northwestern for 13 years after a stellar stint at Princeton.

See also Chris Collins, current HC of Northwestern, he turned it around in year 10.

Bobby Hurley has been treading 0.500 water for a while, and he inherited a much better situation at ASU.

Thank you for posting. Sounds like she is saying that NIL era came along and that has been the issue that pulled the rug out from Pike and that she is increasing NIL and rectifying that issue. We shall see if she can keep these promises, if Pike turns it around with increased NIL next year and produces a top half of the conference team next year, then more power to him and I’ll say I was wrong. But I just don’t see how Pike is the right man for the job based upon what we know of him through 10 years. Would love to see Zinn go in a new direction and put her own hire in place who is more offensive minded, and not stick with Hobbs leftovers (but alas that Pike contract does exist). I hope the NIL is bumped up to match others, I hope it produces winning but also there will be no excuses if NIL goes up to be competitive in the conference but we still go 13-19.

Zinn will support Pikill , until she doesn't.
It would be foolish to bad mouth him while keeping him on salary.
Keli will give Pike a chance to prove worthy while building up the funding for buyout in case he doesn't meet the standards she sets for the MBB program
Right now Steve has a chance to prove worthy and the cost of buying him out outweighs fan sentiment.
But I expect this season he'll get a pass because of his buyout, next year it will be dancing or gone.

One HC a year, this year's firing will be the RU WBB HC
Pike will be on the hot seat next year and if he proves up to par a certain RU FB HC will get his walking papers instead ,if his program doesn't prove competitive enough for Zinn's taste.

I'm curious how many cracks we get against top 26 teams. I'd guess that he gets more at bats against top 25 teams than past coaches.
lol his schedule is ten times harder than any other coach and I would be willing to bet that even Tom Young has hardly any victories against ranked teams

Now its 2..interesting
Pike and Greg are on the same 2 year evaluation period by Zinn/Tate. They won’t be terminated before then, but the possibility increases after that based on results. Until then RU fans may as well support the current coaches because little is changing short term.

But how does Zinn raise significant Nil funds now while both coaches are struggling to remain competitive in the B1G? I won’t refer to them as lame duck HC’s, but others would consider them that.

Raising Nil for RU is heavy lift at this point. Tough challenge for Zinn/Tate.

which of the other seven coaches we have had since Tom Young did not have glaring coaching issues? My point is it's very very hard to find a perfect coach. You have to get very lucky
Tom Young was far from perfect too. People used to complain he was very lazy on recruiting trail. I am willing to bet he has single digits wins against top 25 teams and he was here for two more years than Pike who has 17

Yes it is because Rutgers schedule is infinitely harder now than it was when we were in the Atlantic 10 or Big East. Every conference game is a dog fight and the constant competition is extremely draining. It was a lot easier to get up for a top opponent knowing you played a few patsy's like Duquesne before it

Love this thread as Zinn’s show of support twisted so many panties.
It is a show of support. But, on the other hand was she going to come out and tell Recco that Pike is on the clock, better make something happen and that he’s a lame duck coach if things don’t change real quick? Also, that albatross of a contract for Pike that her predecessor left her with is also helping to generate this “show of support”, how much who knows. I don’t think that radio interview was a 10 more years vote of confidence. What I took from that interview is that she said she will fix the NIL problem, therefore there will be no more excuses for not winning. If the NIL is increased to levels of most around the country and Pike does not win next year with another losing record, I fully expect he is gone and Zinn gets to make her hire and not deal with Hobbs hire.

Thanks for posting.

After listening to the comments from Carino's article in context, it's CLEAR she's not necessarily giving him two years.

Her comment on NIL ramping up over the next two years was in the context of the department as a whole, they hadn't even started talking about the basketball program yet.

With basketball she said he'll have more funds at the close of this season. So I stand by my earlier prediction that he gets next season to get this thing back in the right direction. And if he fails, he's gone.

Not sure why some fans continue to clamor for immediate change over and over but ignore the reality of the situation. Zinn is taking a logic path given her options. Mediocre to atrocious results in Football, MBB and WBB. Inheritied a significant deficit and significant buyouts for both Schiano ($23M) and Pike ($20M). Attendance for football looks to be starting to teeter....basketball will be right behind in that trend. Inherited a fanbase that historically is cheap compared to other BIG schools with no Billionaire whale type to readily come in and save the day. Even core fans seem vocal about "quitting" rather than giving. Given all that, would seem logical that her immediate job is to develop a higher level and more consistent donor base. Focus on corporate opportunities. Streamline the AD, look to be more efficient and cut any related frivolous expenses if possible. Target increased NIL while the deficit and Coaching buyouts reduce over time.

Pike's buyout is $20m after this season and I believe $16m after next. Zinn's lilely not stupid, she realizes that it may take longer to solve the financial puzzle and also needs to manage public perception in the State of NJ where a lot of the populace as well as Media are more than happy to jump all over RU for any money spent on Athletics. She also realizes that Football drives the bus and will likely be the first priority.

All you constant complainers might want to consider resting up as its likely gonna be a while to get this sorted.

He gutted that team not keeping 9 like our fanbase wants and bought a whole new one with comparable money to rest of conference in an easier league....and they are still only a bubble team.Holloway way more of an adaptable coach than Pike. Pike increase of money will still put RU in bottom 4 of Big 10 in funding and he has a traditionally poor track record in portal.
Stop speaking for the fanbase with your spin on what the fanbase thinks.

Looks like Zinn is more of the same, as expected Lather, rinse, repeat. She’ll be replaced in 3 years.
Never happen. Who’s going to fire her ? The president who brought her here?

More to the point. She’ll have no accountability until she hires a new football coach, which will be at least 8 years from now: 4 until she can afford to fire The Grifter and then 4 more years after she hires someone else.

It should be said though that it would be the same time frame for any AD. It’s not a knock on her, but the reality of The Grifter’s contract.

Now we are upset he blew the Houston game in the NCAA, or the ND play in game, or the Minn game , or the NIT game or the 2 NBA lottery picks, or the last 3 sub 500
Seasons. ALL get a coach fired !

RU band fans, everyone gets a trophy, keep the head coach and just keep kicking the standard of Excellence down the road:

Out biggest obstacle, more so than NIL Money, is the loser DNA mentality of our fan base.
especially re our HC I.T. Kicker

The fact that Pike could actually compete in this conference with the talent level he has is an absolute testament to his coaching abilities. There were many people and mods who commented that we wouldn't win a conference game
It’s his job bring in the players. The low level of talent is his fault

and even if we keep 9, we’ll still have 6 spots to fill. I’d prefer to keep as much of the team together as possible.
Not being argumentative and not saying it’s you Diddy but we have to stop with the “Pike is competitive even though the roster doesn’t have Big Ten talent” and “we have to keep the non big ten talented roster together”. While technically roster has 15 now Pike cannot continue playing 12. He has to get back to, for success and NIL reasons, a 2019-2021 mentality of 7 maybe 8 guys getting the majority of the minutes (and time). Francis sure, but he’s not a pg and I don’t want two 6’ guards on the team. Grant but whispers have him looking for his bag already. Buchanan might be a good 7th guy. Not too many others unless you’re retaining them as the 10th or 11th with little NiL

I didn’t say it was 2. I said 1-2. And that is a guess, not what I want to happen. It sounds like NIL for next season will be better but not great. The new AD office is pushing to fix NIL by 2027-28 season. My guess is Zinn will give Pike the benefit of having a competitive NIL and a competitive roster.

It is clear NIL is far from a panacea for Pike. Last year told us this--he had 2 lottery players fall out of the sky, and went below .500. And he retained what was thought to be the best leftover player not named Cliff in Jeremiah Williams.

That should have had him fired. Plain and simple. No accountability.

and as I mentioned earlier, if KZ was the AD, Cliffy could have been "retained" and if so, odds are RU was dancing

easy to shoot holes at Pike, however the reall villian/culprits was Hobbs, and for that matter all of those above/over Hobbs

don't get me wrong Pike rightfully so, is on the proverbial hot seat next year,

however due to an incompetent AD/administration he was left to compete with one arm tied behind his back.

Truly ….i cannot beleive now negative everyone is …..

we are finally getting news thar we are making progress on revenue raising (a univeristy issue since the time of the flood)…..and the spoken response is this ????

Look…I’m frustrated with pike and staff on some
Things ….bur anyone with an objective eye can see pike hasn’t had the resources to build a roster to compete

so…raising him the money …does two simple things

1.) it eliminates future excuses for why do or don’t get it done

2.) if pike (or Greg) can’t get it done with competitive resources in the next couple of years …it takes away that issue for hiring a new coach

let’s be glad we have a AD and a univeristy president who gets it and is starting to get it done on revenue raising ….amd keep it going

I just want to reiterate that if you listen to her interview with Jerry Recco, this was NOT some vote of confidence or even "supportive nod" to Pike.

Remember when she was raving about Schiano a few months ago, saying how it's a miracle he has the program as competitive as it is?

To my knowledge she has never said such a thing about Pike -- and she didn't in this interview either. All she said was he had a couple of good years and has since fallen off with NIL.

She certainly could have hyped him up a little with Recco, but she didn't. All she did was allude to him being here next season (with more NIL).

Being reasonable here, Coquese is the low hanging fruit both from results and buyout perspective. You have to think she's gone after this season. And then politically/financially, I don't see us firing both coaches in the same off-season. So it all stands to reason that Pike gets another year. After that all bets are off imo.

Yeah if next year is similarly bad, he's gone. You then have the promise of all of this money coming in 27-28 to help lure in the next coach

yeah finally listened to it and i didnt come out with the impression of any 2 year deal to get it done. Its one year to prove what you can do and get things back. Also remember Rutgers does not exist in a vacuum in the Big 10.

Coquese was a terrible hire but I dont fault her. She was put in an impossible spot by Stringer who left the program in absolute shambles and Hobbs punted on trying to fix it by bringing in a washed up coach. I dont think the womens program can be fixed and the fanbase was decimated in the mid 2010s by CVS and many of them are elderly or passed on by now. It will take some incredible manuevers by Zinn to get it back but it starts by appealing to New Jersey and perhaps reccruiting a different type of player

A lot of this board doesn't belong rooting for big time athletics. They complain about $32 parking for basketball, brag about flipping Pokemon cards in the hallways of the RAC and how they shook down a teenager with pimples at Shake Shack for their free milk shake because of 2 missed free throws. They haven't a clue as to what it takes to compete in big boy football, basketball and virtually every other sport at RU.
Don't forget the guy bragging about saving money by clipping coupons!

I took it as she was putting it on notice to the fans (listeners) that NIL will be more competitive and therefore better results are expected. I see this as Pike is on notice to shape up next year or ship out. Votes of confidence are really only issued for people that you don’t have confidence in. The reality is they are more a Vote of Lack of Confidence as the coach/individual usually gets fired in the near future following the alleged Vote of Confidence. Vote of Confidence = Kiss of Death.

Amazing what confirmation bias can do.

Quickly rationalizing 2 years down to one. lol

Read it a few more times, and you will be telling me he is done in March. lol

He certainly COULD get fired after next year, but things would really have to go in the tank for your dreams to come true.

How sad to see some fans spending all their time hoping the team plays badly so that the coach might be fired.

On the other hand, I suppose it is a positive to always think that a coaching magician is going to be hired as our next coach.

Zinn and Tate love to tell people we now have NIL and money isn’t an issue. It better be true. And, assuming it is, they better demand success from these coaches.
There is still a lot of work to do by they've already exceeded the goal the set. We need a lot more, but things in NIL are changing rapidly, as are future sponsorship deals. I won't give too much away but that woman is on 24/7. I just hope we can keep her after she starts posting some of these big wins. She will be highly sought after when this ship gets turned around and how she was able to do it.

I've personally never met anyone at Rutgers, including all previous AD's, who have the knowledge and drive that she has. She will not be bogged down by many of the things our previous AD's were or allowed themselves to be. When people like Hobbs were waiting for direction from the NCAA on things like NIL, she was at LSU cutting deals and raising tens of millions to spend on NIL. She's not waiting for anything. She's doing. All with a clear mandate from the President whom she speaks with regularly. Rutgers has never had this type of synergy between the President and AD.
