Wow. Even after a night to sleep on it, its difficult to put that brutal beating into words. Tanner Lafever did a great job of describing it over on HR, check his story out. So let's get to it:

125 - Luke Lilledahl
There were some questions coming into this one with Luke not looking 100% to start the season and with Peterson having a win against him last season. Luke put the questions to rest and won an active match against the most aggressive Hawk wrestler of the night.

133 - Marcus Blaze
The first of the freshman to wrestle was not fazed by the bright lights (well, maybe not that bright anymore) of Carver. While he's had a rough start to the season, Ayala brought his best effort against Blaze but it wasn't enough. Blaze getting out of Ayala's slide by in the 3rd was impressive.

141 - Braeden Davis
As discussed in the pbp thread by others, Davis is still getting into wrestling shape. This wasn't a bad loss. Bailey didn't do much of anything after the early takedown.

149 - Shayne Van Ness
Block got the first TD in this one (and last one for the night for the Hawks). Van Ness turned what was looking like another TD by Block into a brutal looking bow & arrow getting Penn State's first bonus win.

157 - PJ Duke
Like Blaze, Duke showed no ill effects wrestling in Carver. While the match was low scoring, Duke never looked in danger as all Williams had was head slaps.

165 - Psycho
There's no closing that gap. All the cement in the world isn't filling that grand canyon. Mitch just never stops and kept his bonus streak alive with an end of match TD.

174 - Levi Haines
One of the more boring matches, Arnold was sent out to wrestle for a close loss rather than sending out a healthy #3 Patrick Kennedy. Great coaching by TnT.

184 - Rocco Welsh
The matchup we were all waiting for went to script at 1-1 through SV. Angelo is a perfect example of "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" taking a knee for most of the match and letting it get to rideouts. Gutty win by Rocco and great decision to take bottom at the end.

197 - Josh Barr
Not much to say about this one. Barr gets the only pin of the night.

285 - Cole Mirasola
The match Iowa was favored the most to win ended in yet another solid win for Penn State. Both wrestlers did a good job escaping trouble but Cole got the lone TD of the match.

The referee. I didn't recognize him from Nationals, but he was a pleasant surprise.

Remember, I'm an ancient PS supporter. I go back to when Lehigh was our rival and Pasqual Perry referred all their home matches.

He didn't try to hide his bias.

The only thing the ref got wrong that I saw was at 184 when he was trying to keep the PSU coaches from getting to the bottom of the riding time for the final rideout period. He told them that we all know it’s 30 secs and for Rocco to get to center to keep wrestling. While I can get on board with a referee that doesn’t want a lunger after 9.5 mins of wrestling, the riding time wasn’t 30 secs and what it actually was mattered greatly.

I don’t remember the ref making any calls that I thought were wrong…

…but he drove me nuts taking forever to get guys set from bottom/top position… it looked like he either thought he was teaching a beginners class, or was trying to make himself sound smart…

…and was definitely giving guys a chance to catch their breath!

Both the ref and assistant were at nationals last year. You must have just missed him. Probably because he is very good ans good refs are not memorable.

Marcus Blaze. True frosh in Carver vs. a 2x NCAA runner-up who came to wrestle. I was screaming 'watch for the slide by' in the 3rd period. I don't know if I've ever seen a wrestler successfully defend Ayala's slide by. That was a world-class counter and an exceptionally well-wrestled match by Marcus. I love this kid.

I voted for Brink. There was a scramble late in the first where I think that he thought that he was going to score and Calienda escaped for no points. Mitchell smiles as if to say well done Michael. Mitchell is an odd duck, but so glad that he is our odd duck.
I voted for Mitchell as well. I almost felt bad for Caliendo....almost. He got dinged for stalling twice, yet didn't have all that many opportunities to shoot. Mitch just kept firing away...lol

A lot of times Mitchell takes a questionable shot to initiate action, and once or twice scrambled for a takedown. Caliendo could attempt to initiate action from a less then perfect position, but he is looking for perfect positioning. A 16 - 2 difference in shots initiated should be rewarded with more than 2 stall calls.

I think most people posting here would agree that Caliendo is Iowa’s best wrestler, yet I couldn’t believe how MM just went out and majored him again. He scored the first takedown so quickly and never let up. You have to feel a little bad for Caliendo. He would have a legitimate shot at being a NC, but there’s one guy who is too much for him to handle.

Mitch has an uncanny way of backing out of a questionable shot, or even scoring from it....lol

His flexible shoulders really help him in those positions, as Jim Gibbons mentioned during the match. I know Gibbons gets some grief in certain wrestling circles, but there is no doubt he understands the intricacies of technique and match tactics. Most every dual where he is on the mic he will point out specific techniques or tendencies within a match. And this doesn't include his "shoelaces on the mat" and "hips to the party" lines! In the Iowa dual he mentioned how the Penn State wrestlers consistently get one hand on the mat when their opponents snap them down, thus not allowing their opponents the opportunity to get to a corner or their short offense (my words). At other times he has talked about how a wrestler is starting to show signs of being tired because he was standing more upright in his stance, how a wrestler is keeping his gaze too high on his opponent, rather than on their mid torso, etc. I find his observations and comments on technique educational. I would much rather listen to him rather than others who not only don't focus on the particulars of the match but ramble on about themselves or unrelated topics.

The other thing striking about Mitchell is that he does not seem to have as much “handedness” as many wrestlers. Stuff comes out of every direction with him.

The whole damn team was impressive!
If i had to narrow it to one wrestler I'd have to say that kid at 41 for taking our shutout. The team is scary good.

Does anyone know what Ben and the tweet he’s quoting are talking about? Some hand position thing we’ve apparently done differently? I am probably the the least knowledgeable about wrestling technique on the board but if anyone knows what this is and can explain it to me like I’m a complete idiot, I’m interested

Rocco’s mental discipline over 9 minutes facing Angelo was impressive. Angelo relies on lighting fast attacks after lulling you to sleep on the knee. On at least 2 occasions Rocco was ready for it and wasnt asleep - and fought it off. Impressive stuff.

I mentioned earlier I had voted for Mitchell. I just watched his match with Caliendo again. Wrestling Mitchell must be a nightmare. His pace and attack rate are a thing of beauty. He didn't give Caliendo a chance to breathe in that match. If Mitchell wasn't shooting, he was faking and constantly moving his feet and head to where Caliendo couldn't remotely get to his own offense. It is not like Caliendo doesn't have a great offense of his own. Mitchell's pace and attack rate just smothered Caliendo and didn't allow him to get to his own shots. I know determining what should be counted as a legitimate TD attempt isn't an exact science, but by my count Mitchell outshot Caliendo 14-1 in that match. At six shots to one Caliendo got his first stall warning. At twelve shots to one Caliendo got his second stall warning. Caliendo was doing everything at the end to avoid the major when Mitchell converted his fourteenth and final TD attempt to secure the major with just two seconds remaining in the match. I felt a little bad for Caliendo as he slapped the mat in frustration after he gave up the major. He should take some consolation in that Mitchell is a generational talent and when all is said and done may very well go down as Penn State's most dominant wrestler ever. And the best thing for us Penn State fans is we get one more season of Mitchell after this one : ).
