    No dog in this fight, but your gap by population percentages is misleading. here are some rough calcs: 600,000/3,929,214(1790 population) = 15.3% census gap 37,000,000/326,766,748 (2017 population) = 11.3% census gap so the gap is actually less than it was 200+ years ago on a per population...
