Looks like he’s having a great summer. Just posted consecutive 9-strikeout starts (9 innings total). Hopefully he’s starting to grow into a pitcher and not just a flamethrower.
Because Mize was topping out at 98 and had four other pitches he could throw for strikes and whiffs, all within a very durable and strong starter’s frame. Mize could have been the fourth/fifth starter for the Tigers the day he was drafted.

As others have mentioned, his spin rate plays a part in keeping the ball up longer than an average fastball. He also throws almost straight over the top, so one would think he imparts damn near 100% backspin on the ball, again helping it resist the force of gravity longer than average fastballs...
