This isn't over - kid will blow up this year.UK will offer but he may stick - I'm sure having the ultimate green light at Auburn is enticing - Bruce lets his kids play through mistakes
Pearl is a system coach. From what I’ve seen, after the game begins his coaching mainly consists of clapping and trying to motivate his players. If “Bruce let’s his kids play through mistakes,” I think it’s more a product of routine rather an intentional act in furtherance of player development.

Doesn't it depend on how talented your bench is?

This is disappointing. Really good player at one time was ranked 45th and dropped after a transfer and sitting out for a year. Now in the Top 90 and I bet ends up a Top 60 player. He said he wanted to decide this Summer. I thought we would get him to wait till at least the end of the summer. Dam shame, we will see him play against us and say, why didn't we offer that kid, watch. We are going to lose a ton next year, we always do, but this could be almost everyone. Maybe return 2-3 players tops. Why not go ahead and offer this kid who wanted to come here and when you know we will never use all 13 schollys? AUB recruits pretty well and there is a reason they have been after this kid along with many other Power 5 conference coaches. Dam this pisses me off!

Why does Auburn want him? Didn’t they just knock us out of Final Four... more athletes and non shooters.
Credit Pearl for offering a while back. Powell had an outrageous first weekend at EYBL shooting 3s then got injured and people were looking elsewhere. Pearl stayed aggressive and got his man. Powell indicated in the CJ article he didn't want to wait for a UK scholarship.

Powell said he had not received a scholarship offer from UK, but “they were going to offer eventually. I just wanted to get this over with, and Auburn is the place for me.

Damn. Real heady player. Wish we would have offered. Would contribute on and off the floor. Better hustle up Cal and grab Jay Scrubbier. Don’t string it along. We will need players and he might be the best juco out there. Was absolutely the best player in Ky his senior year and has gotten better

Wish the kid luck at Auburn. No big deal to me, rather, feel good for AU. Sounds like its about a right fit. Will prob'ly light us up considering everything. I'm all about SEC schools maintaining their prominence once they get it, because the rest of the country stops paying attention when one shoots up only to drop back the next year when good players leave.

Hopefully Auburn can be solid for years to come, would do a lot to balance out the fact we got UF, UT, Vandy as our main nemesis in the SEC. Vandy and UT away games for us have always been statistically the hardest to win, and UF gives us fits too. So having Auburn there to balance out things for other teams in the SEC is a good thing.

I say, more power to him, as well as their recruits. Bring it on, consistently. We will be better off in the long run.

Go Big Blue!

Cal has shown with Allen he’ll take a good in state player but even with Allen he was slow to offer. UK was in no hurry to offer Powell.
Interesting kid transfers to Montaverde for one semester then says he’s homesick and moves back. Wonder how long it will take to be sick at Auburn.

Ah , this sucks. Just one guys opinion but I think we all know Cal pretty well after almost a decade here .. He's a contrarian by nature , whether it be the NCAA , or Joe Blow , or BBN , if anyone try's to push ANYTHING on him he's going to buck . ( even when he's wro..... I cant say even type it , well I get labeled a clod or a doomer or someone other nonsense that the bootlickers love to throw around on here) But this kid is a great fit at UK , or anywhere else , but again my opinion, Cal isnt going to after instate kids , just isnt.
Meanwhile the majority on here who would throw a party if he came here now set back and diss the kid as being a bench player . Its good comedy . At this point it would be nice if Cal just threw out some Cal speak about every Kentucky kid that ends up going power 5 , get it out early in the process so BNN doesnt repeat this rather weak meltdown after the exact type of kid we desire ( 2-4 year type players) decides to go elsewhere while our revolving door keeps spinning like a top .
I love Cal , but dang Coach , bite the bullet and roll the dice on a Ky kid IF ,, see that IF , the kid can play and contribute for several years . Instead we watch them walk . Then make excuses

Seriously, he honored Jon Hoods scholarship when he first got here! He didn’t have to! Polson came here as a walk on and ended up on Scholarship! He kept Darius Miller when he could’ve let him go off the team! Signed Dom and Derrick! Allen this class! Can’t have a Ky Kid in every class!

If you have to defend Cal's record with that , then it speaks volumes to the issue , he " kept" Darius Miller , I wasnt aware Darius needed kept . He did take Dom , again JMHO , Dom got yanked in and out of the lineup more than he deserved . And Willis was , shall we say , was far from a coaches pet ! Cal doesnt get the warm fuzzies over Ky born players . Thats my opinion . Wish we would trust them a little more as opposed to kinda having a strike against them.

Whatever, I don’t want a roster full of Ky kids! I want the best players we can get! And I’m sorry Ky doesn’t offer that! He didn’t have to honor Darius’s scholarship! They are at the discretion of the coach on a year to year basis!

Thats true of every player at every school in America. And i want the best too , and Cal will continue to get those . This is about those 4 star kids that are not looking to be OAD , those type players willing to stick around and build some continuity . Have experience , being from Ky is just a bonus . Obviously the kid is good , I cant come up with good reasons not to offer him . The consensus is you need experienced play and esp experienced guards . Here one is , right in our backyard , but we let him go to slimy Bruce. Lastly NO ONE .. exactly NO ONE has ever declared they want a roster full of Ky kids , just stop with the false narrative.

But, Cal just signed one and everyone including you thinks we need another! He himself said he knew an offer was coming but, chose the here and now! I don’t have a narrative! He chose not to wait! That’s on him and not Cal!

No idea. Pretty dumb TBH. We’d rather land some 4 star kid out of California with no affiliation to Kentucky, and will wind up transferring after 2 years.

The problem to me is this: he was willing to choose Auburn now. Which tells me he wants to be sonewhere he will play—it doesn’t say he wants to be at UK no matter what.

Say we recruit him and he comes here. There’s a good chance he’ll transfer in 2 years if he isn’t seeing minutes.

Those are upset need to remember the role he'd play will be taken by Dontaie Allen and you could easily have Juzang back for a Soph season as well. So you have 2 shooters there, and will need a lot of roster spots to fill in all likelihood (I'd speculate all 3 C/PF are gone and if you add Blackshear, make it 4) and 2 to all 3 of the guards will be gone. Depending on Brooks/Whitney play, they could go as well.

2020 is a loaded class and UK staff would've pushed hard if they felt he was a must get and they couldn't get a better player. I'd rather have Soph Dontaie Allen and Johnny Juzang or 1 of them in role Powell would have, and bring in class of the prospects UK is highly involved with.

Cal never fills his roster. Could have easily given a spot to this kid & still had plenty of room for the 5 star kids

The kid is a THREE star and ranked the 49th best SG and 228th player in the country. No wonder Cal didn’t offer him. I don’t think we would even get excited about the 49th ranked position player in football anymore.

Will probably be another Chris Lofton deal.
But, don’t worry there is a 5 star from somewhere in Georgia who can’t shoot but excels at the dribble drive.
Cal’s all over him.
Said he is not worried about his free throw percentage.

Because he is a AU level recruit . Pearl gets a few top 50 guys but most of his team is guys between 51-200 . Nothing wrong with that as by the time those kids are juniors and seniors they can be great as we saw this season but none the less UK is another level.

"Another level" doesnt send you home in March . Just doesnt. Without their star playing . ( yes we are CLEARLY historically better than them but when someone beats you with the FF on the line we might want to have a tad more humility towards BBQ Bruce. )

Alright, fair enough. I don't really get involved in recruiting much at all, I wait until they are here to really think or say much about a kid. In this case, I know the kid (a little bit, I don't want to create the impression I'm an expert on Justin Powell. I am not), and because of that familiarity, I have watched all this more closely than I normally do. And what I see on this board is people being very opinionated when they haven't really seen the kid much if at all, and a lot of those opinions seem wildly off-base (one example, the local impression of him is he is a playmaker, first and foremost, and if he has a future at the D1 level, it's at the 1. He is not regarded as a shooter, despite what he did in a weekend in Atlanta, or even what he might do generally on the Nike Elite circuit). It just strikes me as odd that people seem to hold very strong opinions about something they can't really know much about.

But, as I think about it, that's probably the way recruiting works. The average poster hasn't seen any particular recruit much, if at all, and yet it's not uncommon to see pretty strong opinions.....
