Been there when I lived in Louisville. Really looking for places in counties away from the major cities. My dad was born in 1913 and told me he visited every inch of the state. He's long gone and was probably lying, but now that I have the opportunity I'm trying to match him.

Visit Bagdad on the northern end of Shelby County. There’s a little store out there called B&N Food Mart. They have a menu and daily specials. Great hamburgers. Family tradition.

I posted this in the Paddock, but thought there might be more responses here. I appreciate any input.

My wife and I are old, long time Kentuckians. I was born and raised in Hardin County, raised my kids in Jefferson County, and now am back in the country in Daviess County not too far from Owensboro. We are trying to travel to every county in the state in our elder years, and plan on hitting some this weekend. I would appreciate input on the best places to eat/visit in each county. I'm going to try to hit 5-7 counties each weekend this summer. Thanks for the input.

I applaud your objective, OP. I lived in KY for 55 years, and at some time along the way I decided to travel to each of the 120 counties. For a while, I was trying to take a picture of every courthouse, but that effort faded. I have, however, been to, or "through" every county, at one time or another.

I can't help you much with restaurants, since I haven't lived in KY since 2002. I can, however, recommend The Brickyard Cafe, at 205 West Cedar Street in Franklin (Simpson County). The Brickyard Cafe is only three doors off the southwest corner of the town square. Truth be told, The Brickyard is the only "civil" local eatery in Franklin.

And, BTW ... take note of the "old courthouse" that was built in 1882 and is still well maintained, standing in the middle of the town square. Quintessential early-20th century Americana.

Since you're now living on the west side of the Commonwealth, you're not too awful far from Kentucky Bend - the southwestern most place in KY, and the only part of Kentucky that is geographically separated from the rest of the state, to which one cannot travel without leaving KY and driving through TN to get there. Kentucky Bend was separated from the rest of Fulton County when the course of the Mississippi River was altered during the 1811 New Madrid earthquake. You should read about it before you go.

There's nothing to see once you get there, but if you go then you and your wife, and I, will be part of a very, very small minority of Kentuckians who have ever set foot in Kentucky Bend.

Safe travels.

I talk about this all the time with people here in AZ.

Yes, Blueaz. Me too. I live in Scottsdale, AZ. But let's keep in mind, as I always remind my friends here, that Arizona didn't become a State of the United States until 1912 ! Kentucky had already been a part of the U.S. for 120 years when AZ was admitted to the Union.

When KY became a state (the 15th state in the Union) in 1792, the number of counties was a function of how long it took to ride in a horse-drawn buggy to the courthouse. A horse-and-buggy trip covered about 3-5 miles per hour. So a citizen who lived 15 miles from the courthouse had to travel roughly a half-day to get there and a half-day to get back home, in order to do any business in the county seat.

Lived in Jessamine County for almost 30 years, and there is literally nothing good to eat there except for Daily Donuts on Main Street, which ironically are the best donuts I've ever had.

If you’re ever down Owsley County way stop by the Ole Bus Stop Diner. Country food at it’s best. And while you’re at it bring your golf clubs and play Sag Hollow Golf Club, one of the best 9 hole golf courses in the state!

If you visit Butler County I recommend the Farm Boy in Morgantown. Farm Boy Burger is my favorite.

Mi Garcia's is good if you like Mexican. I work in Ohio County and when my friends are in town they like Mi Garcia's. They say it's the best Mexican in the area.

Also like Firehouse Pizza. I know the owner and he is always experimenting making different sandwiches. I like his "Daughter Sandwich" (chicken with buffalo sauce, honey mustard, and maybe mayo) and the "Eric Sandwich" (steak, bunch of other meats). There's a really good grill cheese he'll make for you too, but it's not on the menu.

I spend a lot of time in Bowling Green. White Squirrel Brewery is really good. Good burgers. Good chicken and waffles. Lots of great places downtown. Love Steamer for seafood. They have a really good White Chocolate Peach Cobbler. Hometown Cafe uses local ingredients.

We ate at Stellians in Central City last weekend. Really good Deep Dish pizza.

Harper's definitely when you are in Scottsville.

Little Taste of Texas in Glasgow.

Dairy Freeze in Island (McLean Co.) for a burger.

The Sahara Steakhouse in Cave City has a pretty good steak.

I have friends who like Dovie's Restaurant in Tompkinsville (Monroe County). Suppose to have a really good burger.

Hope this helps. I eat out way too much. LOL!

O's offer is probably Owsley's greatest attraction these days. This place was like paradise when I was a kid. Now it is just a haven for people addicted to meth, fentanyl. heroin and other pain killers. As highly as I would have recommended visiting this area 30 years ago, these days I'd just cross off the bulk of eastern and southeastern Kentucky entirely. This place is lost.
That's pretty overstated. There are lots of nice places to visit in Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky. A very small % of the population does have a drug problem but that exists everywhere. It is worse there but it isn't like you can't visit the area. For instance, Laurel and Whitley are nice places. Visit downtown Corbin for craft beer a farmers market and lots of very good restaurants. It has been transformed and serves as a model for small cities all over the country. Also visit Cumberland Falls, eat at the Dupont Lodge overlooking the Cumberland river.

In Pulaski County, I would visit Short Creek. Would eat downtown at Serendipity at the Orange Door for lunch. Lee’s Ford and Guthrie’s River House are also solid choices.

Might also visit the Civil War battlefield at Mill Springs. Have a pizza while you’re down that way at Mill Springs Pizza.

In Boyle County, visit Constitution Square, Ephraim McDowell House, and Perryville Battlefield. Across the street from the Square, get some donuts, chocolate chip cookies, fresh baked bread and chicken salad from Burke’s Bakery.
Agree on Mill Springs Pizza. I would also recommend Eubank Pizza. Very similar.

In McCreary County just below Pulaski on Highway 27 I recommend going to the Dairy Bar for some eats, It is a classic 1950’s diner and ice cream parlor. The Whistle Stop Cafe in the train depot, the only restaurant with adult drinks in town. They have really good fried pickles. Old Country Cafe and before town mini mart are also local favorites.

Yahoo falls, eagle falls, Cumberland falls, the natural arch, mine 18, the steam engine train ride down to mine 18 coal camp are a few of the easier to get to things worth seeing. Shelton we outfitters has a awesome canoe/kayak service for the big south fork river.

McCreary is the youngest of counties in Kentucky. It is also one of the poorest. Despite all of that it is easily one of the most beautiful places I have explored. 13 different arches, numerous overlooks across a beautiful river gorge. Historic towns revolving around the old Stearns company coal and lumber barons. There is too much to see in one day.
Dairy Bar is really good. I absolutely love Country Cafe.

If you happen upon my hometown of Harlan county, I’d recommend our luxurious Huddle House. They boasted on their sign for months that they have the best steak in town, if that tells you anything.
Gotta go to Cumberland if you want a drink w the meal though

If Carter Co (Grayson) is still on your list, I ate many a forgettable meal at the cafeteria at KCU (formerly KCC) and wouldn't recommend it.

I live in Olive Hill, I’d recommend Carter Caves, hit Cascade Cave and eat at the lodge here. We had Smokey Valley Truck Stop which was on Diners, Driveins, and Dives but it sadly closed a few years ago.

If you're ever in Ashland (Boyd Co.) Go to "Kings Diner" on Greenup Ave. It is actually a Shell gas station but they have a fantastic diner inside. Trust me this is not the usual gas station food. A great friend of mine is the head cook and all meals are made from scratch home cooked goodness!
Another wonderful thing to mention ....... about every meal is around $6.00!! Meals such as biscuits n gravy, chicken and dumplings, baked spaghetti, baked steak and so much more! trust me it is fantastic!!

Livingston co. Patties 1880's near Kentucky Lake, great food, known for their 2" pork chops. Only about 5 miles down hwy 62 east is J-jack's BBQ in Marshall co., everything is very good. McCracken co. You can take your pick of good restaurants in Paducah. There are several restaurants around the The Market House area down town near the river. Quilt museum is only a block from area and the civil war museum just a couple blocks, all within walking distance.

Is Patties back up and running after the fire? We were planning on going there this summer and didn't know if they were up and running?

Love their food. Great porkchop and the bread cooked in the flower pots. And the pies are incredible.

I’ll have to try that out next time I’m in Ashland. Fat Patty’s is a pretty good burger also

Calloway County: I will add Sirloin Stockade ran first class probably most popular in town(Murray) Sammons Bakery locally owned great donut and homemade melt in your mouth buns on hamburgers. Cypress Springs great fish owned for years by Williams family on the lake near New Concord. Or as has been suggested by others you can come to our rural home for as good a home cooked meal as you will ever eat my wife cooks like your grandmother not your mother.

Madison County: we have a few good places to eat, but if good southern food is what you're after, try Jackson's in downtown Richmond; the food is terrific. One of the cooks there is a buddy of mine, and he is a great chef/cook. It's a small place, and during lunch time, M-F, you'll stand in line, and again during dinner time, but it's well worth the wait.

I ate there a couple of weeks ago for the first time. Not sure how I missed it all these years. They will give you free pie if it’s your first visit - take them up on it.

If you visit Lawrence County (Louisa) there is a tiny diner right before you cross the bridge into West Virginia called “Dees Drive Inn.” This place was the place to be during the 50’s with car to car waitressing. Best food in the county.

In my time we sometimes had Sunday lunch at the hospital cafeteria! Has anyone ever liked hospital food? There was no place to recommend. We used to drive to Middlesboro to eat at Long Johns. Glad to know there is at least 1 now.

If you like Bar-B-Que, then try Leigh's or Harned's in Paducah. Best in the state. One word on Leigh's tho, it's run by a couple of good ole boys who just cook what meat they have for that day and when it's gone they close. It you're not there before noon, you can usually forget it.

You need to plan a trip down to Dale Hollow Lake in Burkesville! Best lake in Kentucky and it’s absolutely beautiful. Has a really nice lodge and really good food. Also has a nice camping area if you like camping or staying in a camper.
Also, if you you’re lucky enough to camp there at the right time (mid October) perhaps you will be “entertained” by the family of Sasquatch that inhabit the area. :flushed:

My brother you are correct. I remember how great it was growing up in the 60’s in Booneville. My best friends were Wade, Sherwin, Jimmy, Dave, Larry, Donnie, Nathan, and Phillip Combs. Greatest place to live at that time. Just wondering is Charles Long still alive?
