I posted this in the Paddock, but thought there might be more responses here. I appreciate any input.

My wife and I are old, long time Kentuckians. I was born and raised in Hardin County, raised my kids in Jefferson County, and now am back in the country in Daviess County not too far from Owensboro. We are trying to travel to every county in the state in our elder years, and plan on hitting some this weekend. I would appreciate input on the best places to eat/visit in each county. I'm going to try to hit 5-7 counties each weekend this summer. Thanks for the input.

Hit up Waddy. Eat at Claudia Sanders in Simpsonville 15 minutes away, give or take.

Been there when I lived in Louisville. Really looking for places in counties away from the major cities. My dad was born in 1913 and told me he visited every inch of the state. He's long gone and was probably lying, but now that I have the opportunity I'm trying to match him.

When were you in Hardin County, and which high school did you attend?

In Pulaski County, I would visit Short Creek. Would eat downtown at Serendipity at the Orange Door for lunch. Lee’s Ford and Guthrie’s River House are also solid choices.

Might also visit the Civil War battlefield at Mill Springs. Have a pizza while you’re down that way at Mill Springs Pizza.

In Boyle County, visit Constitution Square, Ephraim McDowell House, and Perryville Battlefield. Across the street from the Square, get some donuts, chocolate chip cookies, fresh baked bread and chicken salad from Burke’s Bakery.

My mom was from nearby. I’ve eaten at Jones several times, most recently last fall. Think they had a steak dinner for something like $7.99.

If you ever come back through holler and I’ll buy you a steak dinner![cheers]

Hobert’s for pizza in Floyd county. The playhouse is good southern food. Can’t go wrong with either of those. Both in prestonsburg.

I think what you are doing is really cool OP.

Campbell County

Food

Best places to eat is sort of subjective, so I'll give you some places that have been around for a long time and generally have a good reputation.

° Spare Time Grill, Alexandria, KY (breakfast...they service lunch too and both are good but breakfast is king...family owned and homemade pies are incredile... looks like an old time diner)

° Pompilios, Newport, KY (Italian, scenes from Rain Man filmed here, been around since the '30s)

° Knotty Pine on the Bayou, Wilder/Cold Spring, KY (an older guy I know from Seattle came in for a business meeting and told that he'd eaten at Cajun restaurants all over the country and had never eaten better Cajun...it is very good, gotta get reservations)

°Goetta Fest, Newport, KY (a long history of this area and Cincinnati is Goetta. If you've never had it order it at a breakfast place up in NKY, it is a German breakfast meat and is delicious...there is actually a festival near the riverfront in last summer)

Attractions

Newport Aquarium- trip advisor has it ranked as one of Top 10 aquariums in the country, it is pretty cool, my kids love it.

Fort Thomas Antique Mall- pretty cool place if you are into antique shopping...they also have a bourbon bar inside so worst case scenario....

There is pretty much always something going on in Newport during summer, most of the other towns are small cities with little to do except a few parks and city fesitavls etc. The bigger festivals come to Newport riverfront.

Extra?

Make time to spend a day in Cincinnati too. Obviously the Reds are there and Cincinnati Zoo is #1 Ranked Zoo in the country. They do a great job there. Tons of places to eat and visit. All of Jeff Ruby's places, Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati Discovery Forest, Kings Island is 30 mins North etc.

Solid choices in PC. I would also recommend Tracks End for a burger.

In McCreary County just below Pulaski on Highway 27 I recommend going to the Dairy Bar for some eats, It is a classic 1950’s diner and ice cream parlor. The Whistle Stop Cafe in the train depot, the only restaurant with adult drinks in town. They have really good fried pickles. Old Country Cafe and before town mini mart are also local favorites.

Yahoo falls, eagle falls, Cumberland falls, the natural arch, mine 18, the steam engine train ride down to mine 18 coal camp are a few of the easier to get to things worth seeing. Shelton we outfitters has a awesome canoe/kayak service for the big south fork river.

McCreary is the youngest of counties in Kentucky. It is also one of the poorest. Despite all of that it is easily one of the most beautiful places I have explored. 13 different arches, numerous overlooks across a beautiful river gorge. Historic towns revolving around the old Stearns company coal and lumber barons. There is too much to see in one day.

Second Burke’s Bakery.

When in Garrard County check out Burger House.

Take a trip down the Mountain Parkway to exit 33 and the Red River Gorge (Slade,Ky).
Visit Natural Bridge State Park and eat at Miguel’s Pizza.
The hiking opportunities here are the best. If hiking isn’t your thing just enjoy the driving tour. Best time to go is the Fall when the leaves are changing.
Make this one of your last trips because it’s beauty will ruin any other trip you take.

Booneville in Owsley County. Look me up I’ll grille out a big steak for u and the wife.

O's offer is probably Owsley's greatest attraction these days. This place was like paradise when I was a kid. Now it is just a haven for people addicted to meth, fentanyl. heroin and other pain killers. As highly as I would have recommended visiting this area 30 years ago, these days I'd just cross off the bulk of eastern and southeastern Kentucky entirely. This place is lost.

Visit Jenny Wiley State Park in Floyd County. I used to have their KY Hot Brown often at the lodge restaurant.

If you are in or around Princeton, Pagliai's Italian, Black patch grill, Adams Breezy Hill restaurant are all very good places to eat and Coon Dog Inn in Fredonia has the best Catfish around. Also Adsmore, Kentucky's only living history museum is a nice place to visit.
