Did Pitino really not know?

I believe Pitino did not know. Now, he still deserves criticism and to have been fired, as he should have been more aware of it all. Count me as one of the few that appreciate what he did for our program, and would gladly have him back one day to pay homage. Fire away.

Does not surprise me really, never worried about what his players did anywhere else, including at Kentucky..

I can believe he didn't know. It speaks to him being all about Rick and what is good for Rick. That's why his recruiting fell off over time and he didn't know what was going on in his program. He should have known, however, and that caused his downfall.
In my opinion it matters little whether he knew or not. Either way he didn't do his job as head of a power 5 program.

I agree with you.

If Pitino truly didn’t know, then he must’ve never been around the team, like ever. I tend to think he heard mummers of various things (hookers, payments, etc) but just chose to ignore them and turn a blind eye, and never questioned anything.

It went on for 3-4 years. If he really didn’t know, then there’s a lot of stuff that probably went on that he paid no attention to. Wasn’t he in charge?

I don't know that Pitino is doing himself any favors claiming he didn't know. Less than a week after receiving the initial penalties revoking their National Championship along with 100+ other games his assistants were brokering deals in Las Vegas hotel rooms to pay for recruits.

If Pitino's assistants felt the could do that it was only because they knew there would be no pushback or scrutiny from Pitino. If he didn't know, it was because he didn't want to know.

I’ve never been a college coach but I did play in college and I can say first hand, in my opinion, any coach that tells you they’re not aware of what goes on inside of the program is a liar of the tallest order.

They are the head man, in many cases with more control than the AD himself, for a reason. They are where the buck stops at this level.

There’s no way Pitino didn’t know what was going on inside of his program. He more than anyone is a hawk when it comes to the inner workings. Maybe more so than K, Roy, and Cal. It’s always been a reputation he made through practice. Everyone knows it.

When a coach tells you X and Y happened and they were totally in the dark, they’re lying. Now setting it up or participating might not happen. They might find out a few things later than they’d like. But they know, they always find out, and when they deny this they’re lying.

Pitino could not have gone 4 years with strippers in the dorms and pay for play without knowing. That’s not an opinion.

Why is it that Pitino didn’t know anything, or suspect anything fishy, about Brian Bowen suddenly choosing UL out of the blue, but Cal has avoided every prospect every year with a hand out?
Why is simple. People want to believe it doesn’t happen here. People are naive.

The Rick Pitino of old was famously controlling and a micro-manager. He knew everything about everything in his program. He infamously once said "If one of my players has a beer at 4th Live, I know about it." Another time he said "if there is a broken chair in Minardi Hall, I know it." This wasn't a case of him making exaggerated claims - everyone knew it was the truth. Former assistants with nightmare tales of the degree of Pitino's involvement in every imaginable detail. When the Katrina Powell story broke, Rick Bozich said "In the old days, Rick would have known the body fat percentage of each stripper."

Denny Crum was the exact opposite, very removed from his players' day to day lives, really aloof. If something happened under Crum and he claimed no knowledge - believable. For Rick Pitino to make the claim, it's hard/impossible to square with his reputation and personality. Unless he simply drastically changed as he got older. Which is a possibility, I suppose. But how many control freaks get less controlling as they get older?

I was just wondering why no one has posted anything about the trial yet.

Arizona is going down in a blazing inferno.

1. How does Sean Miller have a job?

2. I've been blasted for this but I've always thought Pitino didn't know...doesn't make him less guilty, complete lack of institutional control, but I don't think he directed payments. JMHO. Anyone can disagree, which is fine...I can't argue someone disagreeing with me truthfully.

You know I still won’t believe it until I see it but one positive has come out of this is the way to beat getting punished is deny, deny, deny.

If he didn't know and that is a BIG IF, he should be fired for that reason alone. If he had no idea what was going on with his team then he needs to be relieved of his duty. That is how it works.

I just can't believe Pitino didn't know what was going on because he was such a micro manager. Now I guess it's possible the assistants were trying to get ahead and prove they could bring in top recruits and just not telling Pitino how they were doing it.

Exactly wasn’t it Rick who said months before this came down that nothing goes on at campus that he doesn’t know about? This was a smell that you could smell all the way to Cincinnati, he knew he chose not to know.

I’m curious to see what everyone has to say about Miller and Wade since they never have to testify in the first place which I believe to be a crock of ish.

I remember an interview with a former player that played for both Pitino and Tubby and he was asked to compare the two. He said Rick was all business and you didn't see him around unless it was practice or a game situation and Tubby was more of a father figure type of coach.

Then you have the Ray Allen recruitment when Allen was on a recruiting visit and Mashburn was his host. They were eating in the same restaurant that Pitino showed up at and Pitino did not even acknowledge Allen. Which in turn lead Allen to choose a different school.
