Cincinnati targeting Frank Martin...

I’m certainly not an “insider” but I am in Cincinnati often & work around the University. I’m wondering if the name “Martin” has caused some confusion.

The word i’ve been hearing is that UC’s short list includes Erik Martin, former bearcat player in the 90’s & current WVU Assistant under Bob Huggins.

Also, Nick Van Exel (Memphis Grizzlies Assistant), John Brannen (NKU HC & local product), Wes Miller (UNC-Greensboro?) are same names being mentioned.

They have a really good team coming back next year...finished high in the SEC after an awful non-conference start.

I think he get what he can out of this group and then later on sells high for a better job.

USC would be dumb to fire him. Name is a better coach that would be willing to coach South Carolina? I can’t think of any.
I am not saying I agree with him being on the hot seat but if they struggle again next year I can definitely see that happening. I think he should take the Cincinnati job so he will be safe at least for the next few years.

Should he leave?
I don't think so. Cinn. is still outside of a power conference. As low as SC has been the last couple of years, they were in a final four just 3 years ago. Martin is a good coach but he seems to lack the ability to consistently get good talent to SC.I cant see Cinn being a better sell to recruits. JMO

Would be a great hire for UC, but if you're Martin why leave a P5 SEC conference job for the AAC.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see any upside in any USC jr sports. Virtually no history and not a hotbed of recruits in the area. IMO Cincy is a better job, even though the conference is crap

Fact is, the Final Four was a total fluke for Martin at USC. He's not made the NCAA Tournament in any of his other seasons at USC. Personally, I think it's a terrible hire for UC if they were going to move in that direction. He's been 17-16 or worse in 5 of his 7 seasons at USC. You don't hire a guy based on 1 successful season in the last 7. That process always gets teams in trouble.

A few of those seasons you can write off (his first two) because he had to do a massive overhaul/rebuild. His team did go 16-16 this year, but they were 11-7 in the SEC and got a double bye in the tournament. Not to shabby (no idea what happened to them in the non-conference, though).

Smoke and mirrors. UC can't afford the Frank Martin buyout and USCjr isn't likely to negotiate that number if they are happy with him as their coach. Which, by all accounts they are.
UC might be trying to apply pressure to whoever their real target is. Leak Martin's name to the press to make it appear they have a list.

I get the feel that too many here like Cincy ........... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO get outta here. SEC will always be a better job than a mid major. Stay at USC....

Funny story I was flying out of greater cinn airport going to the Bahamas. Guy sitting next me was retired Cinn cop nice guy. He was drinking and feeling good. Got to talking about sports he said UK was afraid to play UC. This was around the 96-98 seasons. I told him just win out to the champ game in the tourney and we will play you. He didn't have a lot more to say. Later on I say his little lady getting chased one night by another guy few minutes later saw Mike coming coming through with a drink looking all over for her. Don't know how that turned out!

If Frank Martin ever decides to leave SC, it would seem that he would leave for his hometown school, the University of Miami, when Larranaga retires.

That is not cause of Martin, South Carolina has the worst athletic department in the SEC..
