If a defensive player hits or goes thru the net, it is not defensive goal tending unless a ball is on the rim. If a player pulls down the rim, while grabbing the net, and the ball is on the board or rim, then it is goal tending.

It is offensive goal tending, if a player touches a ball on or above the cylinder, if any part of the ball is on or above cylinder.

In actuality, a lot of alley oop dunks are offensive goal tending since the ball is caught above and over the cylinder, rarely is ever called, but the ball should be outside of the rim.

Class dismissed.

Correct except there is NO offensive goal tending - there is only offensive basket interference. On defense you can have both.

Agree with everything but underline statement. Rule actually states ball has to make contact with cylinder or backboard first. So....ally oops do not apply.

Art. 2. Basket interference

a. Basket interference occurs when a player:

1. Touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is on or within the basket;

2. Touches the ball while any part of it is within the cylinder that has the ring as its lower base;

3. Reaches through the basket from below and touches the ball before it enters the cylinder;

4. Pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position, and

5. Causes the basket or backboard to vibrate when the ball is on or within the basket or the backboard and/or is on or in the cylinder.

b. The cylinder is the imaginary geometric figure that has the ring as its base and is formed by the upward extension of that ring.

c. The ball shall be considered to be within the basket when any part of the ball is below the cylinder and the level of the ring.

d. A player may have a hand legally in contact with the ball, when this contact continues after the ball enters the cylinder or when, during such action, the player touches or grabs the basket.

Art. 3. Goaltending.

a. Goaltending occurs when a defensive player touches the ball during a field-goal try and each of the following conditions is met: (Exceptions: Rule 10-4.1.h)

1. The ball is on its downward flight; and

2. The ball is above the level of the ring and has the possibility, while in flight, of entering the basket and is not touching the cylinder.

b. It is goaltending to touch the ball outside the cylinder during a free throw, regardless of whether the free throw is on its upward or downward flight.

c. When the ball contacts the backboard and any part of the ball is above the rim during a field goal attempt, it is considered to be on its downward flight. In such a case, it is goaltending when the ball is touched by a player as long as it has a possibility of entering the basket.

What is wrong?
One of the things has already been pointed out. There’s no offenseive goaltending, It’s basket interference. Yeah semantics I know but if somebody is going to be all arrogant and act like they’re teaching a class you think they would know the difference. Also alley oops are not basket interference because if you dunk the ball you can legally have your hands on it in the cylinder.

But you still can not grab the ball in the cylinder off a rebound, whether it is a dunk or not. I think youre just being argumentative because you said exactly what he said just using different verbage.

I’d say 75% of put back dunks are offensive interference. Try almost never call it though because it’s a fun play.

Other than the 1st half 2017 UNC E8 game when we got called for a putback dunk that was outside and partly below the cyclinder. It was the wrong call...but they sure were ready to call it. Swiped 2 pts off the board

They also called a bs over the back on and offensive putback where the defender was under the basket and tried to jump back into the play and our guy went straight up on the tip in. If anything it should have been an “and 1” 2 more first half points gone...I’m sure it was all a coincidence, as was our 4 most critical players riding the bench in foul trouble for over 10 min of the first half.

....I’m not still bitter, you’re bitter. Lol

We all know that. UK fans probably know more about the rules than fans of most any other team. The cylinder part is what makes that goaltending. The announcers kept saying it wasn't on the rim, but the rim is only a small part of the goaltending rules. The question is how much of the ball must be "in the cylinder"? Generally what is practically used is if 50% of the ball or more is within the cylinder then it is goaltending (because if it then dropped straight down it cold go in). On the alley-oops it is very rare one is made where over half the ball is within the cylinder. On that play last night I estimate about 80% of the ball was within the cylinder when the player touched it.

But I knew when it happened, that was NOT reviewable, only clock issues, whether or not a player/ball was OB, or who a foul was on (not whether there is a foul) is reviewable. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be reviewable, but that will require a rules change and start in another season.
It was without a doubt a missed call. But it was not a reviewable call. Still how can a ref have missed such an obvious call at such a critical stage of the game.

If ANY part of the ball is over the invisible cylinder that extends into perpetuity, it can't be touched by either team (either BI or GT).

I've actually seen an alley-oop called offensive basket interference. It should be caught outside the cylinder (Granted, it is rarely called).

Using logic, think about it, what's the real difference?

Dunks are different because you are putting the ball in basket, not off a pass or shot.

This is factually correct. A pass or shot cannot be touched above the cylinder.

It was basket interference first by UK. They very clearly grabbed the net and another UK guy touched the backboard causing the backboard to move. It should have been UK down 2 with 1 second left after UK interfered.

I wrote the username's down of all the posters that said EJ "goaltended"..because it either A.) Shows a clear agenda against their own team from those posters/so called "UK fans" or B.) It shows they have no ******* clue about basketball.
