After reading a lot of post, after the Seton Hall game, I believe the "Bloom is off the Rose," as far as Coach Cal is concerned. There are still a lot of Coach Cal fans, and a lot of fans who are NOT Coach Cal fans. Coach Cal was the best recruiter in basketball when he come to UK. He is still a good recruiter, but players have found out they don't have to come to UK to get drafted after one year. In 9 years of being either No. 1 or No. 2 in recruiting, he has won, one Championship. Three other teams have won 2 each, and two of those teams did not have the talent UK had. The coaching was the difference.
Vance Walberg was the inventor of the "Dribble Drive," but in two years as the HC at Pepperdine, his record was 14-35. The "Dribble Drive" doesn't use a lot of plays, but primarily lets a player go one on one to get to the basket. Offenses change over time, but it's hard to beat, Pick and Roll, Give and Go, set screens so the player can get away from his man, double screens, back-door cuts etc. Just about any Kentucky man, who played basketball in high school knows what I'm talking about. You don't have to have the best recruits to win, but they must have discipline to run the plays.
When we won the NC, we had the No. 1 an 2 in the draft, but more important, we had a leader in Miller. We haven't had one in a few years. Hopefully one will come forward on this team. If not, It's going to be a looong year, and the booo birds will be loud and clear.

It will be interesting to watch how this season goes...not just for the UK BB team but for the fans as well. I know this is just a message board and people can get a little crazy but still, people wouldn't be here if they weren't fans. It will be interesting to watch. Who will be members of the LOD now?

Not sure Calipari has the make-up to be a guy who coaches good-but-not-great basketball players.

Oh, he was at UMASS, but in the second half of the Memphis tenure he became a guy who designed a system to bring in phenoms and then step out of their way. "Unleash" them, etc. The whole offensive system is about opening up driving lanes, spreading out the court, no plays, few screens, etc. In short: a system designed for playmakers. The defensive system is much the same: constant switching, bigs guarding smalls, everybody inverting, etc. In short: it's designed for stars.

And this isn't just basketball. Cal loves being the show, i.e. having superstars on covers of magazines. Having draft picks. Getting calls from GMs. Being in the conversation.

As we've slipped out of the conversation since Fox and Monk left, you've seen a bit of panic. He looks tired, his coaching is erratic, he says weird things to the media--he just doesn't look as in control as he once did. He looks mortal. The window may've been slammed shut on his magic, and that happens to most coaches in this game unless they really reinvent themselves, something Cal doesn't really seem to want to do.

The rose has been off the bloom since the silly Skal year to only have him play pretty mediocre but go NBA regardless.....it has only snowballed with the likes of Briscoe, Hami, Marcus Lee transferring, Humphries going overseas, Wenyen, Vanderbilt's one year was a fiasco, etc....

If we watch PJ, Hagans EJ go NBA and a few more in Quade/Nick leave....it's like why watch guys come here and play average-ish only to bail and have another guy to the same each year.

I think these are fair criticisms. Cal needs to reset expectations among many of the recruits...that would include not being in a big hurry to "recruit over them". If we want guys to stay, we can't bring in tons of other guys with the same expectations.

Meh

After UK beats UNC and U of L all the Chicken Littles will be plucked and fried up at KFC.

Herros, you and I agree a lot of time, but don't put any money on what you just posted. I hope your right, but I doubt it.

Good post. I still like Cal, but he’s nothing special as a coach. In all honesty, I think he’s below average.

He’s a great recruiter, a good motivator, and a solid program manager.

Hopefully things turn around soon, otherwise Cals time is coming to an end.

So you’re saying he’s reinvented himself and is coaching these guys to be multi-year guys?

I mean, why else “throw them under the bus” or not get them ready to win in a December.. it’s the new evil Cal to the rescue. Multi year guys and we are sneaking in under the radar. Love it.

No even remotely possible. Players are not leaving because other talented players are signing. They are leaving for the NBA where every player is talented.

I’m pleased someone is bringing light to the “Legion of Doom” members like the OP. These panic stricken posters deserved to be called out for what they are, to wit: pathetically weak and ignorant Kentucky fans.

Look at all the Chicken Little types in this thread. I wish they would take their so-called fandom elsewhere.

SH beat Maryland last night as well.

SH hit a double pump three point shot to win the UK game. If that luck doesn't happen then we are a solid top 10 team and the sky is not falling . It's just the nature of college basketball. This team is just finding it's identity a little slower than some of the others. The SEC schedule is brutal so I'm sure more of the fire Cal talk will continue.

Maybe a great run or maybe just enuff back off this team for an incredible run down the road. We just have let it playout. Sec should shape us up lol

Of what rose, and what bloom, do you speak?

Cal has been here for 10 years. He is a Hall of Fame basketball coach. He has won a national championship here and his record compares impressively to any former UK basketball coach.

You pretend like this board is an intelligent measure of the job Cal is doing. That's a joke, right? Success in life isn't something that gets decided by a couple of sock puppets posting on an internet talk board. The competitive world is brutal, and it doesn't suffer fools. Many successful people have had to reinvent themselves and make adjustments. If Cal has to do that, he has earned a little slack.

But I gather from your comments that you aren't aware Cal CONTINUES, TO THIS DAY, to be one of the most successful basketball recruiters and evaluators in the country. Every year, his classes are ranked among the best in the country. Every year, UK basketball players are drafted and paid $millions by NBA teams.

We just upset AND EASILY OUTCLASSED #9 North Carolina last night on a neutral court.

Do you remember (maybe you don't) the shape our basketball program was in when Cal got here? Open your eyes.

Does that mean recruit under them.? You've discovered a way to get progressively worse every year.

Who would have imagined such an unusual mind walked among us?

So, where are the boo birds today? There’s way too many fair weather fans on here. Cal’s teams ALWAYS get better as the season goes on. Don’t people remember how this works? December means very little. It’s March that matters. I like this team. I think we’ll be fine..
