I'm happy to see that the HT talk really moved the needle. Gave up 59pts in the 2H while down nearly 30pts the entire half....

I've been railing on Cal's offensive rigidity for years -- this is nothing new.

What blew me away was how easy everything came for Duke.

1) we can't stay in front of anyone

2) defensive rotations are abysmal or otherwise non-existent.

...and when you throw the opponent's elite talent into the mix ---> this is what you get (Driving lanes and open jump-shots).

Total systems failure tonight. And we just sat there and took it, devoid of any real poise or basketball maturity.

Yeesh.

Go back to what I said earlier, Duke's out here running a 4 and 5 out offense and we're running simple ball screens, ****** post pass and jack late shot clock 3 ********. He thinks because he got a few guys who were supposed to be "good" three point shooters that we would simply do well within the system but he's wrong. I've argued it for years, what do we run on offense? It isn't DDMO, thats a ******** recruiting tactic. We usually find one or two guys that can dominate a game because they are Cam, Zion or JT level good and let them carry us. Usually that's good enough but tonight proved that Duke wasn't having any of that nonsense.

K undid Cal's balloon knot on live television.

No good can be drawn from this. We can only hope the colossal embarrassment galvanizes this group quickly. That was terrible on so many levels it's hard to quantify. There were times during that game where I felt frightened. I haven't felt that way watching a UK opponent since Nolan's Hogs of the early/mid 90s. At least we competed with them. We bent over and took it willingly tonight.

on the bright side, at least I won’t be getting my hopes up this year.

Duke was playing an entirely different sport than Kentucky was last night.

Just hope that Capel’s departure now makes it possible for Cal to get back to loading up with multiple top 10 players, at least one of whom happens to be a generational type talent that can simply overwhelm opponents.

Yep, looks like the in-game redass covered most of it. It would have made little difference, but watching them drive past us constantly really did highlight one of Cal's worst qualities - his refusal (or inability) to try anything different.

If you had a team of 4th-graders who were outclassed that bad, you might try to throw a zone in there and/or just slow the f down. Nope, it was "GOOOOOO!" and "let's stick with M2M because they're gonna have to learn to guard"... followed by the blank stare from the bench.

Ugh.

Home with a sick kid so here are a few completely redassed hot takes. Totally irrational but I don’t care.

:fire: K getting elite one and done recruits will tarnish the Coach Cal brand. K will do with elite talent what Cal hasn’t been able to. Face it, based on pure talent alone, Cal should have at least 2 titles at UK and an argument could be made for 4 total. K won’t have those types of what-ifs as long as he keeps getting dudes like he has now.

(It’s not my nature to criticize a coach because, well . . but I’m approaching this as a frustrated fan so whatever)

:fire: This is the type of game that could break a team’s will. It obviously has broken the fan base lol! I was going to view this as a glorified scrimmage regardless of the outcome. I mean, it’s Nov 6. It’s a scrimmage hyped up with mega sponsors and a prime time tv crew. But goodness, that game was something else entirely.

That’s the type of game where the coach makes you practice right after the gym clears out or after you get home off the bus. We’ll at least see what this bunch’s mental makeup is.

Glorified scrimmages in August are much more meaningless than whatever that was last night. Last night was a clearer indicator of where we stand in the national title picture (that is to say, we were absent on picture day).

:fire: Very clearly we were the weaker team last night, which leads me to ask something that I’ve noticed for about the last 3-4 years but never got around to mentioning. What the hell is our strength and conditioning program doing? I get that Zion is going to make anyone look weak, but even Duke’s honky role players were physically destroying us inside/on the glass.

Travis has lost 25 pounds since August. “He’s leaning up to be more mobile.” ********. That dude’s game is centered around being a 250+ pound bulldozer. Slimming up to 230 and still playing just right around the rim is not ideal.

Furthermore, how much muscle has Richards gained? Quade? PJ (another slim up to be more versatile candidate)? I mean seriously, what in the hell is going on in the weight room? Know why we couldn’t stop the ball in transition last night? Because when those studs got downhill, UK had nobody that could stop the ball with their body. That’s why the first step is backwards or a grab/foul. No strength or willingness.

(And go back to Monk and Fox. They both looked like they lost 10-15 pounds DURING the season two years ago.) But I digress.

It was blantany obvious 2 minutes into the game last night that Duke just looked bigger, stronger, faster. Throw in elite level skill and execution on top of that, and you have a recipe for a disaster.

OK that’s it. I had to get that all out there. Clear minds, full hearts, and get pumped.

The harsh reality of this team is that it would be better benching Quade and Richards completely. Take your lumps early with Hagans and Quickley who have much higher upsides and use PJ, EJ and Reid to man the 4/5.

That won’t happen.

Say what you want about Coach K, that guy will bench players he thinks don’t help him win...meanwhile we started Nick Effing Richards all year last year in order to keep from hurting feelings.

So I guess Cal will just keep subbing randomly and hope for the best...who knows, maybe our team will win!

Our lack of effort on defense pissed me off more than anything. Yes, their guys are good. But on many, many occasions they were shooting wide open threes while we stood around, and we were playing matador defense on the drive. We made no effort at all to play defense. Being out of position is one thing, just letting guys get what they want because you’re scared or being lazy is totally unacceptable.

And PJ looked like a little ***** out there. The next time he flexes for the camera I’ll suffer second hand embarrassment.

Green should be benched and told he might want to transfer. He hasn’t gotten the tiniest bit better since he got here. Roll with Hagans and Quckly and Green can play footsie with Brad on the bench.

Until Richards can stop being a little *****, learn to catch a basketball, and play like his basketball IQ is higher than 12 he should sit. He’s much closer to the worst version of Marvin Stone than the elite bigs Cal has typically recruited. Every minute he gets should be given to Montgomery.

Herro needs to learn what is and isn’t a good shot, and someone may want to tell him he isn’t Monk.

I really like Travis, but the guy is slow as molasses and can barely dunk it. Get what we can out of him, but if he is our best player all year we are in deep ****.

It seriously got to the point where it crossed my mind that just forfeiting and walking off the court might actually be less embarrassing.

In terms of Cal being slow to catch up to the pro game, I offer only this - MKG is playing the "5" (whatever that means these days) in the NBA. He was a "3" here despite being completely unable to shoot. We got away with it because he was so damn good at everything else (and we had Anthony Davis - a once in a lifetime talent), but that's not going to happen very often.

With this said, you don't have to be able to shoot to f***ing guard somebody.

Screw basketball.

Some early morning non-political politics for you: Montana has like 400K voters and results are "still trickling in". What exactly do election officials do up there? I feel like no polling station in Montana would have more than a few thousand voters. By all means, just take your time getting this sorted out. [eyeroll]

I assume they have to fight off bears to get anything done up there.

So Duke clearly has the top 3 picks in the NBA Draft. That is usually a recipe for success. Those guys are on a completely different level than our players.

Reminded me...sort of..of the Tubby vs. Cal Memphis beatdown. Cal's players did things that Tubby's players weren't capable of doing.

I'm not even sure it would have mattered if our guys played even decent defense last night. It was quite obvious from the tip that they were intimidated and Zion probably accounted for at least 2 or 3 guys shitting themselves during warm-ups. Duke is head and shoulders more talented and there's nothing that is going to change that. It's their title to lose and after seeing how quickly our guys gave up, I'm not so sure this team has what it takes to make any noise past the second weekend.

I really hate quitters. Getting your *** beat playing your best sucks but it's tolerable. Doubting yourself before you even play then just mailing it in is horsepussyshit.

Green should be benched and told he might want to transfer

....was that not a *hot* topic this past off season and rumblings were that was exactly what he was doing, then some idiot convinced him to stay??? This entire thread loved Quade and omg we need his veteran presence and shooting.

He's gonna look really good these next 10 or so games against dipshit U. Such a heady player.

A damn 5'7 2 guard. That's where we are. Don't understand how recruiting has reached this point, but it's happening. It's here. Brad Calipari just redshirted so he could get ready to contribute as a junior and senior, insiders reported.

Sooner than later Cal is gonna retire and give Joel Justus his blessing. Stew on that ****.

Sun sets at 5:30, btw. :flush:

We really need this win at Tennessee. I’m enjoying being a football school.

Only silver lining I can hope to take from this epic beat down is the dream of Rocky 3. After getting Clubber Langed, maybe Cal turns into Apollo Creed and we knock them out in April...

It’s legitmately funny. Sorry. Gotta laugh. 2015 broke the fan base and Cal. He’s dead inside.

Turned it off about the same time as UCL and hit up, you guessed it, fortnite baby. New mode where you team up with other players to kill monsters AND an opposing team of players. Soooo much more entertaining than whatever in the f THAT WAS. One hundred and eighteen. Highly recommended fortnite for anybody that doesn’t want to watch Calipari’s impersonation of a bad Roy Williams team.

If you ever had any doubt about the value of cutting the chord, my internet was out last night so I didn't watch a second of the game or election results and went to bed at a reasonable hour.

Gotta hand it to Joey, way out in front on this. 10/10 would recommend
