The SEC is loaded with talent. UK is so deep that it will be really difficult for a UK player to grab that award.
UT is pretty deep too.
If I had to guess I'd say Purifoy (sp?) at Auburn. They play an up and down style snd I think he will be a standout player for them.
But then there's Waters at LSU that has a great shot at getting it.

People are projecting Travis to be an All-American.

He's a 5th year senior, a grown man, averaged nearly 20 and 9. Even on a more talented team, he's going to have a big-time year.

If UK can be an above average jump shooting team it’s going to make doubling Travis almost impossible to do. If you double him then he kicks it out for a wide open jumper, you leave him one on one in the post and then he eats you up alive.

No one talking about Grant Williams - didn’t he win POY last year . Really looking forward to schofield/Williams vs PJ/Travis

I almost had Williams over Scholfield on my list. I think one of the UT boys will be 1st team and the other 2nd team.

UT will be the team to beat (along with us) in the SEC. Yes. Most of our teams will be good. But UK and UT will be at the top.

Last Year it was Maten and Williams. (So glad Yante Maten is gone...always gave us fits.).

This year I say four players have a shot. UK ‘s Washington or Travis. UT’s Williams or Schofield.

UK/UT games are going to be tough and more of a war than usual this year.

This is a good question. With Travis being the projected PAC 12 player of the year I wonder how it translates to the SEC?

2nd team All SEC or so not accounting for being far less the center of attention.
Way less quality defense played out there and fewer next level athletes as well.

I think some of our fans look at the stat line as well as his build and believe we brought in a guy trying to improve his position in the lottery instead of a guy trying to find a way into the first round despite his impressive numbers.

Why would Schofield get it over Grant Williams, who was Tennessee's best player last year?

Also, Bryce Brown would be more likely to get the award than Purifoy. Purifoy is also suspended for the first 30% of the season.

I like the Gafford pick. He is going from being on a team with 4 seniors to none. Being a vaunted NBA prospect and putting up 20 and 12 could seal it for him despite not being on a great team. Guys like Silva (USC), Gilder (A&M), and T. Davis (Ole Miss) will probably put up big numbers on crappy teams too, but don't have that 1st round potential.

Q. Weatherspoon would be another dark horse. Miss St. should be good this year and he'll be their senior leader and leading scorer.

Other five-star freshman around the league:

Naz Reid - LSU likely C
Emmitt WIlliams - LSU likely PF
Reggie Perry - Miss St PF
Darius Garland - Vandy PG
Simisola Shittu - Vandy PF
Andrew Nembhard - Florida PG

There's a lot of talent coming into the SEC this year.

Last year's five-star level talented freshman that are now sophomores that could make a leap:

Jontay Porter - Missouri
Jeremiah Tilmon - Missouri
N. Weatherspoon - Miss St.
John Petty - Alabama

I'll almost guarantee Travis will average approx. 13-14/8-9 at UK. We have so many more options than Stanford did. Also, when is the last time a UK big man averaged more than 15ppg? Randle averaged 15ppg on a team where he was easily the best scoring big man and the "Go to". Jones averaged 15.7 on a team where he was easily the best scoring big man. With PJ and our other bigs, plus our (supposed) enhanced outside shooting, I don't see Travis averaging over 14.

Don't get me wrong, he's a HUGE impact player and could help us bring home the hardware. But I'm not sure I buy the POY or AA stuff. He will be a stud though. Love his game and his attitude. The 20ppg will not translate though.

Might be a freshman, but it will be hard, as good as the upperclassmen is going to be around the league. Gafford is a good pick, as he is a one man show in Fayetteville this season, will be interesting with Waters and LSU, i am still out on a limb as to if he has the coaching around him to use him like he should, especially with all that talent around them now. My pick is the guy from Tennessee again..

Matt is in Russia for the World Cup. He tweeted that the Russians knew that Travis was on campus 48 hours before the staff. Check the Russian NCAA websites for their take on SEC POY
