Do we overrate Jordan's supporting cast

I think the media, especially Lebronophiles, completely undervalue James' teammates and slightly overvalue Michael's teammates to push LJ as the GOAT. Lebron had Wade, Bosh, and Allen in Miami (3 HOFers and possibly a 4th) where he went 2 and 2 in finals (and go blown out by SA in 2014). Then in Cleveland, he has had Love and Kyrie (before this year).

Michael's teammates didn't come as HOFers but grew to be outstanding. especially on the defensive end. Pippen was one of the best on the defensive end and on the break. He could not create his own shot and neither could any of other of Michael's teammates. What separates MJ and LJ is that Michael's teammates had very specific roles and knew Michael would take over when it got tight. LJ does too much and the roles are not as defined.

Yep.

LeBron's problem is he is coach and gm too. He chooses the players then chooses their roles. If he'd stay in his lane and be the player, he'd be much better off. So he has noone to blame but himself.

He had all time caliber teammates at Miami. But they rarely clicked.

Kevin love was all NBA before joining LeBron. Now relegated to a jump shooter. LeBron demanded they keep and overpay players like JR and Tristan Thompson. He ran Kyrie off, who I don't like, but had guys to take the big shot. At least he was a threat to score.

That's the major quality that separates the two. LeBron is more physically gifted by far. But Jordan accepted Jackson's coaching. LeBron won't stay in his lane.

Winnington Are you kidding?

Granted Pippen was an all-timer but would he have improved as much without Jordan? He was very unheralded when drafted and grew into a great player. Does that happen on another team?

For all the belly aching that LBJ and commentators do re: his lack of help, can't say MJ was constantly surrounded by a ton of talent other than Pippen. A bunch of role players or good players on the downside of their career.

Is MJ's supporting cast being overrated? LBJ has had several squads that would compare very favorably with MJ's.

Here is the difference, Jordan surrounded himself with role players who knew their job and did it, a long range shooter, a good rebounder etc, and they played as a team under Jordan, none of those guys where superstars short of Pippen, Lebron and no offense this roster in general is his roster, if you don't think they asked LBJ before they pulled the string on any trades you are fooling yourself. LBJ doesn't get the use of role players and how to use them. But in General when LBJ won titles, Miami he had really good players and when they won the title in Cleveland he had Love and Irving, not Jordan's fault LBJ can't make players around him better.

Amazing how much debate goes into a topic that can never be conclusively proven. And even if it could, who cares who's better at a game? Lebron's a better human being, I know that.

If Jordan was a 6'9" behemoth we wouldn't even be having this GOAT conversation. Jordan was unguardable because of his talent and not because he was physically bigger, stronger and faster than everyone else like LeBron. If LeBron was 6'6" and 215 he wouldn't be considered the GOAT.

Never understood this argument. You're completely discounting that he's SKILLED and just happens to be 6'8"-9". By your logic, every bigger dude in the NBA should be putting up 51/8/8 in a Finals Game.

And if my aunt had nuts, she'd be my uncle.

Also are you really trying to evoke pity on Jordan's physical gifts? His airness, with hands bigger than every non center that has ever played?

You get what you get, and he got more than nearly everybody; if natural gifts are discrediting, then MJ is very suspect.

Seriously, I hate this argument. It's so pointless. If Hawking wasn't gifted with a high IQ, he'd be a really mediocre physicist.

MJ and LeBron are great in no small part due to their gifts. They'd still be NBA worthy with lesser gifts, but their ceilings wouldn't have been as high. How these alternate universe hypotheticals affect the real history that actually occurred - I have no idea.

Jordan was also unguardable. Both players are historically great. At this point you can pick and choose factors to decide who you think is the GOAT, thats up to everyone individually.

But to try and change the parameters of a player is really a dumb thing to do. (If Jordan could fly, if Lebron was blind and had one arm amputated.). If you legitimately can't tell how skilled Lebron is, in addition to his imposing physical gifts... then that's on you.

Imagine an alternate world universe where lebrons exact cavs team played in the nba in the 1994 season without Lebron who had retired to play minor league baseball.

Jr smith and Kevin love carried the Cavs to the playoffs narrowly losing to the NY Knicks in game 7 of the eastern conference semifinals.

The first year Michael Jordan was playing minor league baseball the Bulls were 55-27, won a play off round and barely lost in the conference semi-finals in seven games. The next year without him was similar. Scottie Pippen was the All star game MVP without Jordan. Kukoc won Best Sixth Man awards on Jordan's teams.

Do you really think that collection of debris surrounding LeBron this year would win 55 games without him? Or 45? Or 35? Forget the playoffs.
Michael helped build those mentally tough teams over the course of a decade. It's like the year after Dominique Wilkins left Georgia, they went to the Final Four. Those Bulldog teams had been perennial losers, DW got on campus and helped grow that team and even after he left, they played well as a unit. Lebron never stuck around long enough to help shape a team like that.

LJ was in Cleveland for 7 years and in 2010 was up 2-1 over a Celtics team that almost won a Championship. He had an older Shaquille O'Neal, a young Danny Green, Mo Williams, Antawn Jamison. They needed a few more pieces but he left and he has been bouncing ever since then.

Pippen was a top 50 player all time . Rodman was the best rebounder I have ever seen in the NBA and one of the truly elite defenders. Kerr and others like him were great role players. kukok was a really good player. But the most important thing to remember is Jordan played in a different era . If you transported the 96 Bulls to the present they would get blasted by the Warriors as well. Back then if you had 2 superstars you could be an elite team . Now if you don't have a minimum of 3 you are dirt basically . Just totally different eras.

I think curry would be afraid to leave the ground on his jumper against the pistons. Hard to shoot when you are taken out below the knees.
Which was a foul then just like it is now.

People wildly overstate the "toughness" of the NBA in the late 80's early 90's. The Pistons certainly brought a more physical element to NBA defense, but a lot of what they did was simply put an emphasis on defensive talent over offense. That was John Salley, that was Rodman, and that was, to a lesser extent, Joe Dumars. That was really even Laimbeer and Mahorn, both of whom, even if they weren't athletic, were (clearly) willing to bang inside.

NBA defense in the 80's was, by today's standards, incredibly soft. The Pistons did a lot to change that, but those changes became the norm.

And sorry, the Warriors are just a different type of team than anyone has seen in NBA history. They have 3 guys who have to be guarded 30 feet from the basket at all times, and throw in a versatile pseudo-center who can do a very passable point guard impression. No other team in NBA history has been like that.

But asking how it would translate into a different era is pointless. It's of its era, just like every other great team in sports history.

You can't say that or people will say your age is showing. Even if you vividly remember the Jordan era Bulls teams.

The 1994 Bulls had a record of 55-27. The 2011 Cavs had a record of 19-63. Can't compare 1999 Bulls who lost Pippen and others, or the 2015 Heat who had injuries to Wade and Bosh (with them both healthy, though, Heat would have likely been a playoff team).

Interesting article. It reminds you how long LeBron has been in the NBA, some of those guys he played with are blasts from the past. I agree with some of the posters on here that we overrate Jordan's teammates a bit and underrate LeBron's a bit. You can't just point to LeBron's teammates this year (which we can all agree were pretty weak) and say they are worse than anything Jordan had. That's definitely true, but it's not the whole picture of their careers. LeBron's teams have changed so much from year to year, his supporting cast is different almost every season. I would argue Wade is better than Pippen ever was and Bosh/Love are both probably better than any PF Jordan ever played with, same with Kyrie. You also can't praise LeBron for going to 8 straight Finals by beating up on the garbage Eastern Conference and then try to downplay Jordan by saying he didn't have to play anyone tough in the finals.

Some of the same guys who say that you can't discount what LeBron can do because he is bigger will discount Chamberlain because he was bigger, stronger and faster than anyone in his day. Kind of hypocritical. I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good player just not in the conversation for GOAT if not for his physical dominance. If you can't see that his skill level is not the same as some others without being physically dominate then that is on you.

My "logic" doesn't have to do with just his height. Lots of guys are 6'9" but very few if any are as strong, athletic, quick and have the jumping ability of LeBron.

Jordan EMPOWERED his supporting cast. He gave them a role and made sure they were used in the correct way for team success. Jordan felt he could win with anybody. Similarly with Steph Curry...he let Draymond, Klay, Iggy, Livingston get their shine and feel involved in the offense....and they became great players because of his unselfishness. Getting others involved doesn't always mean high assist numbers (See Westbrook)

LeBron's supporting cast are there to push him to a title...but they aren't really involved in the offense. Shooters like JR and Korver sit and wait to shoot...and if they dont get touches to get in rhythm they get cold waiting for their oppourtunity.

Jordan allowed a player like Scottie to develop and flourish....LeBron doesn't like younger players and you never really see young guys develop into stars under his watch. (Kyrie was already averaging 21-22 PPG before LeBron)

You keep using Jordan, when I think you mean to say Phil Jackson. Lebron has never had the benefit of high level coaching, which doesn't impact him individually as much as it impacts the pieces around him. Erik Spoelstra is probably the best Lebron has had at coaching, and those were the best teams Lebron has ever played on, it's not a coincidence.

The Master of Zen is forgotten too soon.

This is a big thing that gets left out in the Jordan/Lebron war. Look at Lebron's coaches, and there has been a lot of them. I mean Tyron Lue. Good Lord. Now Lebron brings a lot of this upon himself. It's part of the reason I would never consider Lebron the number one player. His ego gets in the way so much with coaches, other players. Jordan is number one for me but Phil Jackson is one of the reasons.

I've actually been a fan of both Jordan and Lebron and I think the either or is borderline ridiculous. They both are the best players of their era and IMO the top 2 players to ever play the game. Why does it have to be either or?

Same.

I enjoy both of their games and don't understand why we have to compare athletes of different eras constantly.

I just am thankful I was alive to see both men play.

Personally I would put Wade/Kyrie a notch below Pippen. And I didn't really care for Pippen.

I'm not sure on which planet I would have to be on to put Bosh or Love ahead of Dennis Rodman. Love in particular has been a disappointment ever since he came to Cleveland. The one title the Cavs won was when Kevin Love was relegated to a bench player, behind an aging Richard Jefferson.

Rodman on the Bulls was definitely on the downside of his career both rebounding and defense. He was in his early 30s when he joined the Bulls so can't really say he was a HOF'er when he played for Chicago. I'd forgotten that Pippen was 5th overall in his draft. Of course, Seattle immediately traded him for Olden Polyneece (sp?) and draft picks. Grant, Kukoc, Cartwright, Kerr, Paxson, et al - pretty much all role players, nothing special. MJ never played with a guard as talented as Wade or Irving.

I think LBJ is great. I also think, like many others before him and currently, he gets away with a ton of traveling and offensive fouls that are never called because he's LBJ. I don't think his total game, much like Harden's and Westbrook's and Kobe's and many others, make it easy to build a team around him. You've got to get just the right pieces in the perfect mix seemingly to allow him to do wonderful things and still have teammates pick up the slack when he's off his game. It seems to me that he's been allowed to meddle too much into personnel decisions, many of which (like MJ when 'playing' GM) have not turned out so well. It's a new NBA and you almost have to get buy-in from your stars but that doesn't mean they always know what's best, either.

LBJ will go down as one of the all-time greats, no doubt. Different eras, different opponents, different styles of basketball make it hard to compare players through time. I don't think anyone can make a definitive statement who is the GOAT but it's fun and interesting to debate.

Generally good post, but Rodman's "downside" in Chicago involved him leading the league in rebounding every year he played there and being 1st team all-defense in 96.

People ALWAYS underrated Rodman because he was such a loon, and because he (eventually) more or less refused to shoot, but he was a SUPERB piece for good teams in that era. He didn't need to touch the ball, and he did everything well (superlatively, in terms of rebounding and defense) except score.

Some of the great teams in the era before Rodman came into the league had players of his type. Bobby Jones for the early 80's Sixers, Kurt Rambis and then AC Green for the Lakers. Rodman was like those guys on steroids, and having a guy like that made team-building with other guys who were great scorers much, much easier.

My take on the MJ vs LeBron comparison is the following:
I'd give the nod to Jordan for now. The 6-0 in titles carries a lot of weight. Jordan had the ability to make his teammates better, not sure that James can say the same.. Definitely not on the same rate of Jordan. I do think however, if James can get one or two more titles and continue to average 20+ points per game until he's 40, I don't see how he could not be the GOAT.

He makes his players jump shooters. Look at Love, Wade, and Bosh.. They were all multi-purpose players until LeBron molded them into a one-dimensional player.

And its funny you say I keep using Jordan....you must have missed my Steph Curry example in the same paragraph.

And it's LeBron's choice to not have an X's and O's coach because he wants control. He LEFT Pat Riley/Spolestra....remember David Blatt who had LeBron's role players like Mozgov and Delly playing at a high level in 2015 finals...yeah LeBron did not like him and got him fired for Ty Lue because Ty lets LeBron do whatever he wants and Blatt wanted to run a system.

People forget that Rodman came into the league late. He was a 25 year old rookie.

People also forget that, in spite of his issues, he kept himself in superb condition, at least until his last few years in the league.

I don't know if his Bulls years were his absolute prime (probably the 5 seasons prior), but he was still very much near that in 95, and really didn't show much drop-off until his last season with the Bulls, when you could see him begin to fade some.

Would they have answers for Kareem, Magic, Bird? Nope

And add in Johnson, Parrish, McHale, Ainge and others on Celtics roster. Then add Cooper, Green, Thompson, Worthy, Scott and more to Lakers roster. Warriors would be hard pressed to have answers for those two teams.

I think James would have enjoyed Pippen, Rodman, Kukoc and some of the others. Hell, especially Rodman and Pippen. Rodman was nasty on defense and rebounding. Pippen, the surly SOB, is perhaps the most underrated player ever.

I don’t think this can be stated enough. For those trashing the rest of the Cavs and the coaches that LeBron has had, you have to remember that all of these guys are handpicked by LeBron. If he doesn’t have major league talent around him it’s because a) he takes these one year deals where no one worth his salt will come to play without a commitment from him, and b) he strong arms management into ridiculous contracts from guys like Smith and Thompson.

As a Laker fan, i would love to see LeBron out here. But i can lice without him because of fear of how he would try to hold the organization under barrel. They are just now crawling from out under what Kobe pulled in his last days. Would hate to see them revert back to that, even if it means losing LeBron.

awful take

Why is this an awful take? What about LeBron's skill set, besides being bigger, stronger and faster than anyone else in the league, makes him great? Do you honestly think he could do what he does if he was Aaron Harrison's size?

He is an average to below average career 3 point shooter at 34%,
He is an average free throw shooter at 74% for his career
He is above average from 2 but that is because he bulls his way into the lane for layups and if he was of average physical ability he could not do that.
He has a career average of 6 assist per game but the ball is in his hands every possession so that number should be high. He basically plays the point forward position.
Despite being physically dominate and the most gifted athlete to play the game he averages 6 rebounds per game for his career, which is less than Mason Plumlee for his career.
Despite his athletic ability and size he averages 1 block per game, which again is the same as Mason Plumlee for his career....I will repeat Mason Freaking Plumlee.

So tell me what about LeBron's stats tell you he is the GOAT without his physical attributes? If that is part of it then Chamberlain should be in consideration and you never hear him mentioned. Larry Bird averaged more rebounds, assist, steals, shot a better percentage from 3 and the free throw line and was only slightly behind LeBron in scoring and overall field goal percentage. He also averaged .8 blocked shots per game and he couldn't jump 3 inches. So tell me what makes LeBron the greatest of all time if my take is so awful. It sure isn't because of his record in the Finals.
