Brad Stevens had a team full of injuries to all key players the entire season and his Celtics are still in the playoffs. He's done as masterful a coaching job as I've seen in sometime. If he's not coach of the year fir what he accomplished this year then the award is a total joke.

Why would anyone bother getting into these jobs unless it's A. all about the money B. you have a transcendental player to build around?

They don't have to deal with NCAA rules. They don't have to beg teenagers to play for them.

Seems like a pretty sweet gig when compared to college coaching.

NBA coaches have no power. If you get elite players and have success but they don't like you... bye. If you don't get elite players and fail... bye. The main perk is a higher salary, but very little job security.

Firing Casey is a joke. Fire Demar Derozan.

Toronto is suffering from the worst type of thing in Pro Sports--fake record with fake stars heightening expectations. Kyle Lowry is trash. He should've been allowed to walk last offseason. Raptors bought into his "mystery ailments" during Postseason which to be fair aren't just prone to him--several athletes in numerous sports love to enter a big game with an ailment to protect their performance or enhance it's value should they play well.

Who on the Raptors is elite? DeRozan? Lowry? They are paid like it. Those guys are frauds. Their level of play ebbs and flows and very few times if any, have both played well on the road in postseason play. Rest of roster has good parts, but starting 5 is very "meh". Casey has done a fine job there, and his reward will be pink slip because they are stuck with roster. GM isn't going to take blame....and group is paid and going to be hard to move--unless you bait an idiot like Tom Thibadeau who would likely give you Wiggins for a DeRozan. Many up in Twin Cities argue that Casey shouldn't have lost his job here, so he'll be employed by someone and hopefully get an actual Franchise player to build around.

As for Raptors and their frauds.they'll steadily decline further unless they find a sucker and as we've seen there are several (Call Minnesota--Thibadeau will take on your trash and all the players want out of this mess before they get life altering injury), so hopefully for their fanbase they can move some of these posers.

I agree with most all of this besides calling Lowery a fraud. He isn't an elite top 10 player but he is for sure a top 25 player . But Derozen is way overrated. He isn't a top 25 player . He is more like top 50 . I thought the Cavs would beat the Raptors in 5 games and they made it in 4. Not surprising but that isn't on Casey . He did a tremendous job getting the 1 seed with 6 or 7 seed type talent.

Very goofy. If you get fired you can hang out for a while and get hired by another NBA team.

Lowry? Big game on the line, you want him on your team? Then again, I laugh when people tell me Chris Paul is a "Point God" and one of the best 3 ever to lace them up. He and Lowry are very similar in terms of mental shrinkage in tough moments.

Lowry is a guy I like as a 2nd unit PG and that's problem with today's NBA--a guy like this is paid like he's a top/frontline player. Same with DeRozan. They have the paycheck of franchise players and top talent and the game of role players who need to step aside for the grown up table when it's this time of the year.

Disagree in part.

There are just things that are important to regular season success that aren't as important in the playoffs. Mainly, depth. Toronto had the deepest team in the league in the regular season, and when it was their bench against an opponents, they almost always kicked ***.

Just doesn't mean as much in the playoffs. The stars of your team need to be stars, or else you need guys to step up beyond their normal level. Toronto's stars aren't as elite as other top teams, and no one else stepped up at all.

As for Casey losing his job, it would be a little weird, but the thought in pro sports is that if you're stuck at a certain level, it's easier to bring in someone to try something new rather than to try to overhaul the roster. Golden State went along that path when they dumped Mark Jackson, and it paid off big time.

Right. Getting involved with the NBA has to be primarily about the money, because you have so little to do with building a roster. Too many factors seemingly out of a coach's control. What is always funny is when the coaches get "miked" during the game. If you expect to hear some grandiose pearls of wisdom, you can forget that. "OK guys, let's get our focus back and play every possession, don't let them back in the game, and play our game." A seven year-old in junior pro could tell them that.

I remember several years ago Colin Cowturd mentioned that was the dumbest award in sports. At that time like 5 of the last 6 coaches that won the award were fired.

NBA coaches are the most overated coaches in sports. GSW had the best start in NBA history with Luke Walton. Players first, coaches second. Who made Phil Jackson so convient for him to have coached 3 of the top 10 players of all time.

To some extent, it is a very clubby environment. Much like the NFL. Once a head coach, there is always some team that will take a chance of you if you have any success and if not, you can be an assistant coach making a lot of money with a faction of the stress. Or even work in the front office. I feel like there were like 10 coaches that were offensive or defensive coaches for the Cowboys and/or the 49ners in the '80s and '90s that ended up trading off those two teams success for like 30 years. Wannstedt, Campo, Butch Davis, Norv Turner,

Largely agree. When I watch them, which isn’t really all that often, I wonder how they’re record is as good as it is.

I may be in the minority but I think Derozan is a superstar. However, Kyle Lowry, Valenciunas (sp) and the rest of the team's core is just not good enough to win a title.

Only a handful of NBA coaches actually add value to the team. Outside of those, you hope to find a one that won't nosedive your chances with poor management and playing the wrong players.

That's what it is. There is probably a maximum of six coaches at any given time, like twentyish team managers, and a couple interim randoms pending someone else probably being the next team manager.

Actual numbers may vary but that always feels like the gist of it.

Valanciunas is a good enough center for a title team. He's not the one who chokes every year in the playoffs, that's Lowry and DeRozan.

One of the best observations ever made here. It works the same way in college coaching. I laugh every time the myth about great "x-and-o" coaches is trotted out, especially when applied to a certain ex-coach of ours. In the NBA, as well as college, the vast majority of "what makes a good coach" is the talent at one's disposal. Next most important is preparation, which includes what happens in practice and the ability to motivate. By game time, it's primarily in the players' hands. Precious few games are won because some putative basketball Einstein left his overmatched counterpart in the x-and-o dust.

You do realize that the TV networks allowed to air any of the comments discussing actual strategy, right?

Eh, college coaching is totally different. Watch a pre game with some of them. They go over every inch of the game and use lots of strategy during the game. In the NBA LeBron does what he wants, when he wants.

Easier to try a different coach then to blowup the team. They were never winning the title, but they’ve also had the misfortune of being in the same conference as LeBron.

They could hire God as coach and they aren't winning a championship. Time to blow up the team and fire Casey out of respect to him, no sense in him staying around for a rebuild.

Successful coaches in the league do way more changes in game, and game to game, then college coaches do. In college you’re playing a system and you rarely divert very much from it. Most upsets are a result of a coach refusing to change anything.

Seen this in other Pro sports before. Makes me think of Joe Girardi getting his first managerial job back with the Florida Marlins. 1 season, wins National League manager of the year and got fired.

Maybe they feel with Dwayne they've gotten as far as they can with his voice in the locker room and are turning another direction. Casey is a good coach and would get another job in the league. Monty Williams had gotten New Orleans back in the playoff mix a couple years ago after their drought and was relieved of his duties.
