Boys I sat in that stadium in 89 or 90 amd watched us drive the ball down #1 Auburns throat for a TD to pull us within one in the final moments. Instead of going for two, we opt for the tying PAT only to have it blocked and AU wins. Point is.....it is a new day. THANK YOU Greg Byrne! THANK YOU for bringing the best damn coach this little ole school has ever seen!

Actually almost no coach calls for a field goal there.

You run an offensive play there regardless. Would you rather have a 6 point lead and have to kickoff to a team that has already returned one tonight or would you rather have a 3 point lead with the other team having to drive a minimum of 65 yards on offense to tie the game with 9 seconds left. Not to mention the possibility of a block there.

Obviously the choice is the latter. You run a play there 100% of the time in that situation. But throwing the ball in the back of the endzone was beautiful. I think UT thought we were going to run it and we caught them. Offensive playcalling was pretty good tonight. We couldn't establish the run but we still went with it, got a couple good runs from it, and opened up some lanes for Russell. Nothing fancy, nothing tricky, just went straight at them.

It really wasn't that big of a risk...

..if Russell had an incomplete pass or got sacked, Tyler Bray still would've had to drive 90 yards in 10 seconds with no timeouts. The only real risk would've been if he threw a pick-6 or fumbled.

Wouldn't the clock start after they set the ball? So if Tenn got the ball after change of downs and the clock runs that's why you run the play and don't go for the field goal

I think you'd see a a lot of coaches kick the field goal but probably most would have run a play. It was definitely the right call to run a play with minimum turnover risk.

Clock stops on change of possession. So it wouldn't start again until they snapped the ball.

Yeah, during the TO I was thinking kick to force them to score a TD but risk the return? Or run the ball to pin them deeper and burn a few seconds? But to throw the ball....hell yes! What a play. The play will live in Bulldog lore forever! Points still remains....cantaloupes!

No, the clock does not run after a change of possession. Clock would start at snap.

A FG there was meaningless. UT had no time outs with 14 seconds on the clock. They were not going to get a FG to tie. By lining up for a FG you put yourself at risk of three bad things and nothing good. The worst is a blocked kick and run back. A lesser evil was a miss and they get the ball on the 20. The third is a made FG and having to kick it off to a team that has already returned one for 6.

Running a fairly safe play on 4th down you at worst burn a few seconds and give em the ball inside the 10. Did take stones to put it in the air though.

We were talkin about giving Prescott the ball and letting him run it around for 14 seconds, the td pass was great and I think Mullen had that play in the bag or he wouldntve called it. Hail damn state. Hail Dan Mullen.

Kicking it there would have been dumb. The safest bet was to take a knee, try to run around back there and kill a few more seconds before falling down, or try another running play. Kicking the FG would have been tempting the football gods. We went for the dagger and I couldn't be happier.

Also, not to be Debbie Downer, but I about punched a hole in my couch when Marcus Green had his typical once a game Marcus Green moment and let that pass slide off his finger tips. Otherwise he played a great game.

Considering Tennessee's kickoff returns.....

most coaches would run a play there since we couldn't run the clock out and worse case, they have to drive 90 with only 10 seconds left. And if you are going to run a play, you might as well go for a TD and ice it. A lot of coaches would kick it but a lot of coaches would also go for it.
