No one is changing my mind, I believe these shoe companies are placing these kids at certain schools. They have probably done it for UK also but still doesn't make it right. There is nothing the NCAA can do about it and that part sucks.

K's position on amateurism now is that the NCAA has no business concerning itself what a kid or his family receives in high school. Really? That's the model collegiate program you want? And the media still slurps all over you as a saint? Yeah, now that Duke is bringing in these "amateur" OAD's with hundreds of thousands in the bank. Dirty, tainted, but untouchable. Stinks, along with the corrupt NCAA.

That's why if anyone ever comes at me with Kentucky shame I say yeah that mysterious $1000 is so terrible. Shut up!

I'm sorry, but how does Bagley's family getting money from Nike differ from Enes Kanter's family getting money from the school in Turkey? Kanter was declared ineligible!!
Kanter's family received money on behalf of Enes. The Bagleys received money because Bagley Jr was running an AAU team. The did not receive money on behalf of Marvin III.

This is a non-issue. Bagley was actually eligible after his sophomore year, so his JR year he was only taking electives.

In addition, any money his family received was b/c his dad was a renown coach receiving a completely justifiable salary from a company from whom which wasn't even his employer.

I know this b/c Coach K said Bagley was a welcomed addition to the Duke family, so that means there is zero chance any rules could have been broken b/c the integrity of Coach K and the Duke would never be associated with any questionable activity.

Well, when Enes Kanter's parents received a few thousand dollars on his behalf when he was 16-17 years old from a pro team in Turkey ( there are no amateur teams there) for his tutoring and expenses when traveling, which they placed in an account to be repaid if need be to preserve his amateur status, the NCAA led by Crooked Mark Emmert determined that he had forever lost his amateur status and would never play for UK.

So how is that not showing that the NCAA does have "jurisdiction" when a 17 year old's parents receive 10's of thousands of dollars from a shoe company?

Again, the distinction is that the Bagleys received money because of the dad, not the kid. That money was not on behalf of Marvin Bagely III, so it has no bearing on the case.

Repeat everything that I wrote in Jay Bilas' voice until you realize that nothing will happen. The NCAA handling of the UNC case has set the precedent on how you contrive the argument.

It baffles me that Nike would go to all these means to plant kids at Duke when Cal has put far and away more players in the NBA in the last 9 years who have excelled and would have been great names to endorse Nike products. You would think they would be bending over backwards to keep that Pipeline of future endorsements open.

UK should consider shopping their apparel deal if the company they are contracted with is actually working against and in competition with our best interests.
It's as simple as this. Look at kyrie Irving feet. Look at jabari parkers feet. Look at Jason tatums feet.

Now look at John wall and Derrick rose's feet (both adidas). The Duke players aren't going to rock the boat. They are going with nike.

Nike couldn't give a damn what is on their jersey in college. They care what is on their feet in the NBA.

There's no coincidence that the biggest endorsed for Nike (lebron) said he would have gone to duke. I'm sure nike put a couple extra bills in his wallet to say that.

And if they paid Bagley, you know damned well they paid the top 3 for next year. I would LOVE to see K and Puke go down in flames after being caught knowing players were paid to come their way. Capel had been caught before, but no one in sports media chases after him with under-the-table accusations of continued cheating like they do with Calipari (who was cleared of any wrong doing, but is still haunted by accusations even at UK).
So they went from bankruptcy and foreclosure to living in a gated community in the high rent district of CA and not one red flag for the NCAA? They were paid plain and simple. K is as dirty as they come. Everybody on here knew something dirty went on for Bagley to get cleared so quick with his 3 schools in 3 years. This is proof.
NCAA is definitely in cahoots with Nike and the big phony in durham. Cal should wear a jacket with all his FF's on it to every press conference for the rest of his career.

A player's family receiving money prior to enrolling in college didn't effect Enis Kanter....why should it impact Bagley?? This board is paranoid and hypocritical.

Bagley dad started that Pheonix family team when Marvin was in the 6th grade. Nike decided to sponsor years later. Nike didn’t start the program. They sponsored just like they do all the other programs. And that comes with Bagley dad getting paid by Nike just like all other AAU program directors. Nothing to see here

Just another example of why Duke and UNCheat are hated. They are phenomenal cheaters with no repercussions ever. Corey Magette and Lance Thomas would be proud.

Just being honest man. No need to get your hopes up about duke getting caught cheating. He’s not the first child of an AAU coach/director

Doesn't seem like much of anything. To me, this falls under the umbrella of if a kid can make money for his family then he should be able to. The only problem I would have with it is if Nike influenced Bagley to go to Duke (which they probably did). That would be the sleazy part of it for me. A kid making money for his struggling family doesn't bother me.

Apparently, it didn't bother Ratface, either. Just because it is illegal shouldn't affect anything.

I know the Oregon paper ran an article last week but I find the timing odd. Not mentioned while dUKe was still in the tourney and only picked up by the “big” media after he has declared for the draft distancing himself from dUKe

Hopefully people keep asking questions. We all know K is in this up to his neck. Hopefully it will all come out

I know it sound great to say he they get Duke but you need to be careful what you wish for. If it is proven that Nike paid for him it could come back to bite the Cats as well. Nike probably in one form or another takes care of many players every year

This must be why Emmert has talked about looking into compensation for players.

He already has more or less said that fake classes are ok as long as non athletes take them as well.

When Duke and UNC are in the crosshairs the rules are open to interpretation or change.

And they will probably make it retroactive to last year, so Puke is not at fault.

The key thing here is the amount of compensation Bagley Sr. received vs. other AAU coaches. If it’s substantially more - which is a safe assumption - it’s a pretty obvious illegal benefit.

Sierra Canyon - the school Bagley enrolled in as a Junior - has a tuition of $36,000 a year. From bankrupt to enrolling yr kid in an elite expensive private school.

It’s no different than schools arranging jobs for parents of recruits with pay that is drastically out of proportion to their experience. Sorry Duke trolls, you can’t do that.

That's a valid point and could happen. I don't think it will necbecaof how "thorough" thamel and Forde are regarding UK/Cal. Still could happen.

Nike is much smarter and much more careful than adidas. The NCAA is fully aware of this and could care less.

They're in the FBI sting too just noone indicted....yet. Their eybl league office was raided. Gatto came from Nike.

It's all there. Just not out yet

Got to keep in mind, this is not the NCAA’s investigation. The FBI is not going to care about the NCAA “darlings”.
I think this will end up being the biggest scandal in collegiate sports, when all is said and done.
I hope you're right. The whole double-standard is so f-ing sickening.

This honestly scares the crap out of me. Do I think Duke and Coach K are squeaky clean, no but if these kids are being paid under the table by the time they are 16 I think it’s naive to think some of our guys, UNC guys, Kansas, UCLA, et al. Now is this going to be too big for the NCAA to police and they basically say “hey as long as coaches weren’t giving the money your school is safe” then this might end well. But if the FBI keeps sniffing and the NCAA tries to enforce their rules on everything found, every single P5 team will probably be punished.

There will be a few who take big falls from all this, FBI isn't all that scarey with good lawyers they still have to prove what they are accusing. When and if the IRS gets involved things change, they don't have to prove their case, you have to prove you aren't guilty, hell the IRS put Al Capone in prison when he laughed all the way out of the courtroom when it was the FBI.

FBI isn't scary? I've defended numerous cases against them. They are very capable and have an incredible conviction rate.

The IRS is scarier on the enforcement end. They can do things collecting their debts that noone else can.

In this case you have both. You have all the wire stuff then all the money that wasn't reported. That's why I always shook my head when people started with the "I'm not sure this is a crime" rhetoric.

So this kinda means many of us were rigjt .
Cal DOES still recruit at a high clip but can’t blame him for being “owned” by K/ Duke when they’re obviously funneling/ paying HUGE amounts of $$. We’re not even talking like .. a ONE really nice car situation, but lavish amounts of money.
