With the Chris Mack hiring seemingly a done deal, I was thinking: was it simply money that lured him, or is he betting all the hammers that are gonna fall have fallen? Does anyone here have any idea what's next for them? Some of their fans seem to be operating under the assumption that there won't be sanctions going forward, but I can't imagine it's anywhere near over yet.

Would Mack knowingly walk into a situation with years of post-season bans and sanctions looming?

Good questions
I kind of think of UofL gets anything more it’ll be minor
Bowen never played for them and all the parties involved with the FBI thing have been fired
They get a few more sanctions based on the fact it happened while they were on probation, but nothing approaching vacated wins.

You have a chance to make 5 million plus a year and take your wife back to her home town? Really??
How anyone thought there was any chance he would turn that down is beyond me.

Happy wife = happy life

Plus 5 million a year doesnt hurt either

I was wondering the exact same thing.

I don't follow Louisville close enough to recall their punishments for their various violations. Can somebody fill me in on exactly what penalties they've already been hit with? Thanks. =)

It's a win/win for a guy like Mack. He's an established coach with zero ties to coach 2. Like cbrwalt said, his wife will be happy to go home. There are pretty much zero expectations for the program until the NCAA/FBI dust settles. And with that comes a good sense of job security. There is an excuse in place in the event that he isn't winning from day one. I think it's easily the best hire they could have made and as a rival fan it upsets me that they put a guy in place who seems pretty damn likable.

Mack is like any coach not nearing retirement. He wants a payday.

Louisville....who knows? Because of the sheer size of the FBI probe information that has been leaked, the NCAA could well decide not to act, pointing out that all coaches...including Padget...that were with the team are gone. Head coach gone. AD gone. Bowen never saw a second of playing time.
Mack, because of fan 'love' will just about need to produce at sweet sixteen, great 8 level his first year.
Tough gig, but enough money to ease the pain.

Xavier is going to stink next year. So it's either commit to staying there at least two years to bring your stock back to where it is now, or strike while the iron is hot.

Let’s be honest: it’s not a home run hire and the best they could do under the situation (and the ONLY reason they got him was due to his wife being from Louisville)

He’ll be a 22-12 type coach there if he can get his system in place in a few years that will challenge to go to the Sweet 16. But in no way was it a “home run hire”.

You can’t be on probation and offer a kid $100,000 to come to your school to play without getting hammered. I understand they have cleaned house but so did UK when our transgressions came to light. Different time but you know what we got and we weren’t on probation already.

A buddy of mine described the Mack hiring like this...... Pitino's UofL teams were always fighting to stay in the Top 3 of the ACC with UVA, UNC, and Duke.... Mack's teams will most likely be playing to stay above the middle of the pack during the ACC schedule.

True enough
I think, though, that one thing in their favor is that it’s such a widespread investigation and so many schools are involved.

I hope the NCAA hammers the heck out of UL. If the NCAA does the right thing they have to come down on UL with more sanctions coming because offering a kid money while they were still on probation has to amount of more sanctions.

Exactly. U6 should be hammered...loss of tournament, etc

Why all coaches leave schools like Xavier. Stepping stones are there for reasons and when an elite school opens up , you hope you’re considered.

Yes, a lot of schools involved but none mirror UofL's situation. Coaching staff cheating again while you just got smacked with a hooker scandal? They're getting hammered and anyone who thinks otherwise is in for a surprise.

I would coach at that cesspool for five mil a year. At this rate, it would take me about 55 years to get to that. Do it for a couple of years; if things go to crap, there is a built-in excuse as to why you failed at UL.

I didn't seriously think the NCAA would remove the banner (glad they did though) either ! The fact that they were on probation may cause the NCAA to do more to U6. [cheers]
