It's very intriguing for him. I get the camp that says "Take the money and run". For most recruits absolutely. But he has so much to gain next year, that it would be really more like his freshman year.

If he goes now, he might get some money, but he'd probably fall well short on a 2nd and 3rd NBA contract.

Being a 1st rounder really seems to be the cutoff. After that the guaranteed money is much less. And if you can't show out, that might be all she wrote for your earnings potential. You gotta strike when the iron is hot.. but you also can't fall short either.

If he could stay healthy I would sure as hell like to have him back, but I think the odds of that are very small.I think UK is better off without him because there is no way to tell how much he would play. The needs of the many(team) out weigh the need of the few(one) No matter what Cal says.

This is not a knock on Vanderbilt but to cover all the returning player threads. I would have hoped to see Skal return more than I care about any individual player returning next season

This is a blue sunglasses wearing post.

JV is nowhere close to Giles with both being healthy. Never was and most likely never will.

I usually agree with most of your posts but I'm just giving my observations of the situation.

When was this when Giles torched Tatum what was they sophomores in high school?

Giles may have had something special about his game then. I just haven't seen anything from the kid that says he still does. Perhaps his peers have passed him by over the past several years.

Vando currently has at least 2 NBA ready skills. I honestly think that's unbiased.

Giles was very special. Vando wasn’t even a 1st Rounder before he was hurt this season according to Giovanni.

Not sure Giles will ever regain his glory days but going by your words “if both were fully healthy” I can guarantee that you would be in a very small minority, Harry was that good.

Because the longer you stay and get injuried the lower your stock drops. Like if Harry Giles would have stayed and got injuried again he wouldn’t have been a first round pick like he was in this past draft. Vandy needs to declare and get feed back. If he can get a promise to get drafted and a guaranteed contract he should go

I don't see how a guy like this goes Pro. He would be foolish to go Pro after this year.

I guess we will have to see when Giles suits up next season. I'm still taking a healthy Vando over a healthy Giles. Good debate as always.

Briscoe is playing in Latvia and his contract includes all you can eat cabbage buffet and use of indoor toilet

How many Briscoe’s are on this squad?

Top ranked player at his position out of HS.
Played out of position 2 years.
Hated school.

We do not have a Briscoe on this team.

I know you tried to spin that off a little while insinuating players that return get inured and hurt themselves, can you name some players who returned to college and destroyed their career by injuries before they got there?

I'm playing catch-up. But we aren't assuming JV is on the same level as Giles, are we? Giles was arguably the most heralded recruit in the last 5 years. He was a can't miss and was the best high school player as a JUNIOR.

You take a flyer on Giles, but not JV..

Damn you Poe give me at least one laugh today :joy:

And Vando is 6'8 with guard skills, court vision and the ability to pull boards like a boss. He does need to improve his shooting but the kid passes my eye test unlike post injury Giles.

Even when "healthy" I didn't see it from Giles. Hopefully next season Giles is "fully healthy" so he can be the "superstar" that some still see. Personally I don't see it. Hopefullly he proves me wrong because I'm not hating on Giles personally.

We talking about the same Harry Giles? Whatever it is you saw in him, or think you saw in him.. the scouts saw something different.. All of them, actually.

Giles, Zion, Simmons, Wiggins.. Wall maybe? These were the most talked about, can't miss recruits, of the last 10 years. JV is not only not on the list, he isn't even close to it.

This, how can anyone not understand the difference in the two.We are talking Ayton/Bagley type vs Vanderbilt/SKJ

Let's be honest does Giles look anything like those guys you mentioned? Maybe he did at one time I just don't see it.

What is left of Giles obviously isn't the same skill as those guys.

Vando actually showed NBA level skill at the collegiate level. Something that Giles failed to do.

I never scouted Giles but believe it or not I did used to scout a bit (2006 to 2010) and I enjoyed it immensely.

I don't have any inside info now or anything like that (never had much) but I did scout the high school and AAU circuits for over 4 years and a few coaches valued my opinion.

I'm just going by their recruiting profile. JV may very well be better than Giles from this point on. Actually, I wouldn't be shocked at all.

But again, Giles was a once-in-a-decade talent. You take a flyer on him all day. Chances are picks after #20 aint doing much in the NBA anyways.. so why not take a gamble on Giles if you're Houston or GSW?

JV showed some great glimpses this year, and also showed he really wasn't ready for the NBA after one quarter-length of a season.

If we move Giles up to this year.. put both players at their respective spots after freshman year.. I'm taking Giles before JV.

Sure take a gamble on Giles not saying not too. I just don't see the hype personally at all. And if he really was at one time a once in a decade type player it hasn't panned out for the kid. He certainly is not a once in a decade type player now. What have you seen from Giles since he was a sophomore in high school? Absolutely nothing.

Giles is not Ayton or Bagley both of those comparisons hold no water at all. Bagley has the best motor I've seen in awhile and Ayton is just a freak. Giles has neither of their skill or athleticism. Not even close.

I know its easy to get caught into most of the UK guys go pro. But just don't see it happening with JV. It's one thing if you are a big, or were projected 1st round before you sat foot on college (Michael Porter Jr, Trae Young). I believe we lost Knox, SGA and Diallo to the NBA. Tai is kicked off the team. Wenyen is not going to the NBA, but if his family needs money, maybe he leaves to go overseas.

I sure as hell don't want to have to depend on Vanderbilt next year. Doubt he will stay healthy.
I totally agree with this. I don’t want to depend on him either, but I’m surprised by the poll. I mean where in the world could he go? No one drafts someone hurt or whatever he is.

Why? If he can be drafted in the 1st round he will get paid. With his health concerns why would he risk trying to play college ball again?
This! He would be crazy not to go. I would and so would everyone else in his shoes. Easy to say this guy or that guy is not ready or he should come back.
FACT is none of us would stay if millions were offered to us. I don't blame any of these kids for leaving and trying to help there self and there familes.

Once again millions are not being offered. You have to get drafted for that. In the first round no less. JV probably won’t get drafted at all let alone the first round. Bottom line is if you have no business being in the NBA then you have no business entering the draft. You still have to earn it and JV hasn’t .

where is he going to go? the Lithuanian league to play with the Ball brothers? Too many good players in this draft. Would you take him over Maten from GA for example? What does he bring to a NBA team that they would spend a 1st round pick on him?

The NBA drafts on upside.

Think back to when Vanderbilt committed to UK, and all of the many reasons you were excited about it. He has the potential to be a 6'9" point forward. In a league that has become obsessed with perimeter play, small ball, and "positionless" basketball... can you see why Vanderbilt's upside and potential would be intriguing to scouts?

What.

So we complain when we have guys leave for the nba but we don’t want a guy like JV to come back

Lol ok

Experience has a way of souring possibilities. In this case, the mystery of his injury and our poor performance last night seems to have poisoned the outlook.

The basketball court showed that Vanderbilt was our most productive big per minute due to his insane rebounding rate. His shooting was suspect, but he wasn't a total slouch offensively because he could dribble, pass, and offensive rebound. Last I checked, those skills are pretty important too.
