The Bulldogs sent Matta home this week with a lucrative offer, but that ultimately wasn’t enough to sway him. Georgia would have given him a 5-year deal worth at least $15 million, according to DawgNation’s Seth Emerson.

“It was the most difficult decision because Georgia is a tremendous opportunity for a coach to build a great program,” Matta told Goodman. “Unfortunately, I just don’t feel that I am completely ready at this point to give Greg McGarity and Georgia what they deserve.”

Matta has dealt with serious health issues in recent years, which ultimately led to his departure from Ohio State. In his exit press conference with the Buckeyes, Matta detailed some of the issues he had been dealing with.

Seems he used us to satisfy the continued payments from tOSU, unless he takes another job then he'll just be a liar.
A bit surprised that he didn't take the job,UGA seems like it could/should be one of the better jobs in the SEC.Yeah it is a football school but it is centrally located in a region where there are a lot of athletes to be had. Bring in someone with an up-tempo style and make basketball fun,why wouldn't it work there.

Why the interview if he knew this already? Not enough money? 3 mil a year.

He left OSU as a fairly old man because of health issues. He’s not getting any younger so his reason for refusal could be genuine.

I never took Thad Matta to be a liar. But I suppose time will tell.

Georgia might be best served by waiting until after the dance and "auditioning" the coaches from the smaller schools in the field that make noise in the tournament and hope for a hire like USC got with Enfield from Florida Gulf Coast after they were the darlings of March a few years ago.

I recommend 1) Chris Mack 2) Steve Prohm
Chris Mack will likely take the L1C4 job or stay at Xavier. I'm still not sold on Prohm. I know he had a lot of turnover this year, but it's hard for me to get excited about stealing a coach with a relatively large buyout after a 13-18 record.

Matta's health issues have been somewhat a mystery to the public.

He is younger than Steve Alford, Crean, Pearl, Howland, Barnes, Jamie Dixon...

Then why did he even go interview for the job?......I think they didnt offer him what he thinks he is worth..
I’m not sure. Me and Thad aren’t that close. Just dinner buddies really.

Maybe he wanted to see what other people thought he was worth? Idk. But he’s never struck me as a dishonest person with mal intent. And until he proves that he is, I will not assume that he is.

Big fan of innocent until proven guilty.

Some will think this is bad form...but I'm going to post something I wrote yesterday:

I have long thought that Georgia is a sleeping giant.

Georgia has 10M+ population -- eighth among US states.

Metro Atlanta has 6M+ (about the same as the entire state of Indiana) 70 miles from campus.

Great UK players have come from Georgia:

Legends: Bill Spivey, Kenny Walker

UK greats: Jeff Sheppard, Gerald Fitch, Jodie Meeks...and others like Randolph Morris, Rodney Dent, Eric Manuel

A Georgia coach could field an SEC contender just with recruits from Georgia.

It’s tough for a football school with not little basketball success to get a top coach. I give UGA credit for trying because a lot of the fb schools don’t. Maybe Tranghese? has helped encourage the rest of the sec.

Johnny Reb knew the southern were girls hot, they would say, Georgia girls are cute and Tennessee girls are sweet, but the girls from old Kentucky are the ones I want to meet. I married one from Falls of Rough, KY.

I wonder what did happen, did he get down there and not like it or did he see how serious they were about upgrading their program or what?. I think Georgia will be able to get a good coach, there are more positives for the program than negatives.

I think the Georgia job is the best job currently on the market. More so than UL. My reason, high school basketball in the state of Georgia. Every year they put out 5 stars. Loads of them over the years with some of the greatest basketball players in history coming from there. UK has been privileged over the years to get their fair share of them.

The right coach who is able to recruit the state as it should be recruited for Georgia will produce outstanding teams. Winning would bring fans also. It just takes the right man and off you go.

Matta must have decided to keep taking the OSU cash, instead of working. $100 K per month, plus paid insurance is awfully good for sitting around the house. They should have kept Fox, and gave him more budget to go out and hire a recruiter, like Antigua, instead of throwing out the baby, with the bath water.

Recruiting is not fun unless your name is John Calipari, doing nothing but what you want to do and getting paid for it is fun. Matta prolly has enough money to last him for a while, I've heard other coaches say they didn't like that part of it. It's time consuming and costly and exhausting, not to mention striking out on prospects more than bringing them into the fold.

The Georgia 'peaches' are even better. I know, I was married to one that I met there (although she was born in Bama).

The peaches I can understand but the good (fruit) peaches are in South Carolina now. Pecans are the best in Georgia now. I love them both.
