Heard this morning that UL is bringing in Billy Thompson to try and recruit KP to be their next coach. Because of the source, I believe it, but as always TIFWIW.

I hope Kenny stays but it wouldn't surprise me if he's a head coach somewhere next season. He's a hell of a recruiter and been a good assistant coach for us.

He's already being paid more than he would probably get at most schools that would come after him. UL might go higher, but they are in some financial distress and until the FBI stuff is resolved, no coach worth is salt is going to even consider it.

I think Payne will be a really good HC somewhere. But he has zero experience, would be walking into a dumpster fire of a program that can't recruit until FBI-gate is resolved and has a fanbase that expects to be as good UK. Not to mention, 50% of the fanbase would revolt due to his connection to Cal/UK and the fact he's not Billy Donovan or Brad Stevens.

They are poo pooing Chris Mack, who would be a helluva get considering the shape that program will be in the next 5 years.

What UL should have done is hire Bellarmine's Scotty Davenport from the start and given him a sweetheart 3-4 year deal. He's a really good X's and O's guy who would be able to rally the troops/boosters (beloved local HS coach who was on Pitino's staff at UL) and win some games with lesser talent. Then when the FBI thing was over, put him out to pasture with a nice parting bonus and go for a big-time coach.

I wouldn't like it, but wouldn't blame the guy for taking his shot. BBN would understand. Wouldn't be like Rick going to U6.

Short List for UL: Tom Crean, Chris Mack. Thats about as deep as the well goes. Don't see UL hiring another coach with 0 HC experience immediately after Padget.

I also prefer to keep KP, he's our best recruiter

First I think Larry bird is going to try and talk to Brad Stephens about it.
Then David Robinson will beg Greg Poppovich.
Finally, Oprah is having Billy Donovan to her private island where she will hunt him unless he takes the job.

They've already got Chris Mack.

I really hopes he gets cold feet with all they're up against. He's not a world beater but he's much better than they deserve. Thinking Crean would be the guy who start a movement in Louisville.

Bro. Is that why you go to church? To pick up UL rumors?

Just kidding.

They had better stick with Padgett, they have zero recruits with any talent for next year and they lose most of this years talent. Odds are in 2020 the FBI thing will begin to show up and kill recruiting until it is resolved. So UL is probably looking at least 4 years before they can begin to recruit even 4 star talent. A new Coach is going to have to play with 3 star talent and in the ACC that is a recipe for disaster. So why would a guy like KP want to put his career at risk with that dumpster fire?

He has an eight year deal. That's long enough to weather the storm.

Poor guy. I'm sure he'll be paid well when they run him off. Whoever takes the job, unless it was someone like Cal, K, Donovan, etc., is committing career suicide.

The Chris Mack thing is wishful thinking on the part of UL boosters.

Nobody would be willing to walk into that mess

They would be smart to keep with Padgett until mushroom clouds are no longer in the foreseeable future. This FBI thing could drag out for years.
He would give U6 a little stability and Padgett pads his resume. How good his resume pans out is on him.
AND he is a CHEAP hire.

Louisville fans right now are overestimating the allure of the job. To be honest, every fan base of a school that has any tradition does this in times of turmoil. They won’t go after KP, there would be a revolt. My guess is it’s a pretty quick process, they’ll ask Chris Mack, he’ll demand a 7 year deal, and they’ll give it. His wife is from Louisville and he’s allegedly said it’s a dream job. It’s a mess, and he might look back one day with regret (see Rock Pitino, Celtics). But this is as close as he’ll get to a elite level job - a top 10 but not elite school in the middle of a dumpster fire.

I thought Katina Powell has already done enough for the program but if they want her as coach I'm fine with it.

If I was them, I purposely emulate the Wildcats of late 80s. Recruit a bunch of kentucky players. Find a coach that loses exciting games. Build a devoted fan base. Weed out the line beard bandwagon fans. Ride out the storm. (Hope) Good players will come back when the penalties are over.
