Questions about the win

Okay I have questions about the game last night. Everyone seems to be saying we got a gift at the end because Vandy choked on free throws. I’m not sure I get that. Were we not down 14 points? Did our team not score the necessary points to come back? Did all of those points come at the line? Did we not hit our free throws? Did all of Vandy’s points come from free throws?
At some point you have you have to give our guys credit, yes?

With some, its either win it all or the season sucked. Those fans are hard to satisfy.

You are right BKO but some have to downplay any positive, because they refuse to be happy about anything but blowouts and NCs. Even tho they probably never won anything in their life. Yes we played very poorly last night and I admit got a little lucky. But without fighting till the end like that we would not have had the chance to get lucky. Good teams find ways to win even on off nights, which is what the Cats did last night. Sad that some have to whine instead of giving credit where it's due, don't really understand that mentality but it's rampant here at RR.

Wasn’t the free throws missed from Vandy that equated to luck. It was the foul we received to send Shai to the line. Very fortunate for the Vandy guy to be incredibly stupid to go after that ball.

Props to scratching to get back for sure though.

Bad coaching decision, Drew was quoted as saying that he was confident that his player would make both free throws but still lined his players on the free throw line? What was he thinking? Pull back to half court and make us shoot a very long 3 pointer. Oh well good for us.

I don't pay attention to those folks. They are not happy unless they are unhappy.

We probably should not have been down 14 to that point. That wasn't good. That being said, we did a nice job battling back and finding a way to win. I give UK a lot of credit for pulling that win out after how poorly we played for a large portion of the game. Vandy definitely handed that game away, with fouling SGA and missing their free throws. If they make free throws they win, but that's part of the game. Vandy didn't deserve to win for making those mistakes.

Yup looking back we missed as many free throws as they did. If we learn to do that better, the close games might not be so close.

We can be proud of the comeback, but it should have never been necessary. It was a lot more than free throws. From Vandy's perspective, if they make their free throws down the stretch they win that game. Call it them choking or gifting us a win, or whatever you want, but that's what cost Vandy the game.

On the other hand... we don’t know for sure if we couldn’t have scored after their makes
I think the killer for them though was air balling that last three

Props to the team for winning when the entire arena was having an off night, but replay the last 10 seconds 100 times and we lose 99 of those. Fortunately the one that matters is the one we won.

In that case, we would've needed to make a lot of 3's, and even that may not have been enough because of the time.

The gift was when the Vandy guy jumped on SGA's back with 2 seconds left he wasn't hitting a 60 footer for the win.

We put ourselves in a bad way with lackadaisical play for most of the night. Vandy was feeling good after a solid win on Saturday and apparently we weren't 100% mentally in the game like they were. The Cats are 10-12 points better than Vandy at home but they managed to keep us at arms length most of the night.

We finally showed some grit and did what needed to be done to pull out the win. Vandy played hard but they made a few mistakes, which we capitalized on. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Myself, I was surprised and proud we were able to pull out a W. With WV I knew we would get back in the game. I wasn't sure we'd win but I knew we'd cut it close because the reason we had such a deficit was 1. Unforced just dumb turnovers and 2. WV was hitting fade away 3's and most of the scoring came from 1 guy.

With Vandy, they played deliberate, tough and balanced basketball and seemed to have an answer every time we tried to make a run. Last nights game had me thinking we're not gettin back in this one! We fought back and played with poise and maturity in that last stretch. SGA was sooo good and for the second game in a row we had a player just take over the game. Yea, we got a little lucky with Vandy missing FT's but we put the pressure on THEM.... We put them on the ropes. What I'm seeing is this young team learning to Win! Now we know, we're never out of it until the buzzer. This team is getting better and the last two wins were paramount in the development of this team... All the pieces are there folks. Just be patient, we're gonna have some fun in March.

THE COMEback is all on our team. The win though is on vandy for not executing. Our boys gave themselves a chance to win after being down big and vandy choked it to us. It’s a blend of resilience on our part and chokege on vandys. That’s how great teams win though, they take advantage of opponents mistakes.

Sometimes a team wins because the players make the plays. Sometimes a team wins because the other team makes too many mistakes. Sometimes a team wins because they make the plays and the other team makes too many mistakes. Last night, Vandy made the mistakes and we made the plays!

We definitely did what we had to do to make the comeback after digging ourselves into a hole. Vandy didn't do what they had to do to keep us in that hole. So it was a combination of both teams' efforts or lack thereof in Vandy's case.

The point is bad teams tend to do stupid things. It isn't luck.

And not surprisingly those are the same people who are obsessed with Duke , make stupid posts about losing games before the game ends ( and Uk comes back) , think Cal needs to start different people , think Cal needs to use more time outs , think Cal cant recruit , hated Briscoe , hated Andrew , hate Diallo and so on and so forth. In other words they are miserable people who just want negativity to fill their lives. This team has warts and most come from being painfully young but they are getting better and thats all you can ask.

If there's a question to be asked it should be about this:

Kenny Payne said in post-game comments that they knew for 3 days that Vandy was going to drive the Cats.

So why were they unable to stop Vandy from doing it at will?

One thing I did notice is that Diallo only played 21 minutes last night and had 2 free throws. His defense that had LaChance go right around him for the Layup was the worse defense of the night. I love the Lineup that consist of SAG, Green, Knox, PJ, and Vanderbilt or Gabriel. I believe that is why Richards played only 12 minutes and Diallo had 2 Free Throws. It will be hard to keep Vanderbilt out of the lineup once he gets back to game shape and his offense starts coming around with playing time. Vanderbilt has not played since last April 2017 when he played in the Nike Hoops and Jordan Brand Classic where he scored 19 points in each game and had Double Digit Rebounds in each game. He was everywhere on the court with his scoring, rebounding, steals, assists, and blocks. He was by far the best player in both of these games and he only played 20 minutes in each game. The lineup with Green and SAG at guards and Knox, PJ, and Gabriel or Vanderbilt you have SAG Driving to the basket along with Knox, and 3 point shooters and mid-range shooters in SAG, Knox, and Green. PJ, Vanderbilt, and Gabriel underneath in beast mode scoring and rebounding could be the 5 that leads us March Madness in making a long run to FInal Four.

Like my dogs, freshmen don't always listen but some better start because Cal says now he wants fighters on the floor and if you don't fight you sit.

Vandy is bad. We got the win, and in the long run that is all that matters, but it definitely isn’t an encouraging performance.
