Hello everyone. Sorry to raid your board. I posted my son's video here last year to get some feedback on his skills. Because I respect the opinions of this board

He just started his 5th grade season and his first year playing on a 10ft goal. Thank you your time.

Not bad at all for 5th grade. Looks like he's got that crossover to go with and he went left and right which is a strong indicator for a kid his age!

Nice video. Even if the kid never plays NBA basketball, he'll remember all the time spent with his dad and the way the game brought you guys together.

I bet 99% of this board is here because someone we love passed on this crazy obsession. Some of my best memories with my dad are either on or looking at a basketball court.

I coach 5th grade. Your son is pretty good - above average . He clearly was better than other kids . Teach him soon to look to pass the ball. Athletic advantage starts to disappear at this age and he soon won’t be able to get to basket that easily.

Have you taught him how to pass yet?

Yes....There is a pass or 2 in the video...a baseline bounce pass to the other side of the court to the open man. But he does work on passing.

His team is not that great. So a pass is a turnover or missed shot. He will start select play this summer. Which will help him learn other aspects of the game.

He will get better playing with better competition.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes. I make him play against junior high kids at the rec. So he will always be at a disadvantage athletically. Has to utilize his skills more. His shot is what allows him to play with them. He shoots better with a regular size ball than a 28.5 to me.

I will take scholarship to anywhere.

But you are so right. We have really bonded. It's nice to hear him say he wants to be like his Dad.

Have fun and build the bond. Only a small percentage ever play collegiately and then only way less than 1% if that group play in NBA. Love for the game can last a lifetime though.

If it's something he truly loves, let him pursue it as far as it'll take him. But you can also use it to guide him toward things like studying and chores and use basketball as the reward.

So that even if the college coaches don't come calling, the admissions counselors will.

He's really skilled Jeans and better than some are letting on at his age. Kids with his ball skills really stand out at a young age. My daughter was very similar at a really young age. Really advanced in her ball skills, way ahead of others her age. Was MVP of UK camp twice. But it did get harder later as others caught up physically and skill wise. She had a good run in basketball, broke school record for assists, but ended up excelling in a different sport.

Still there is nothing like ball handling skills for young kids . It gives them so much confidence and allows them oto get around the floor and do so much more. You see so little emphasis on it even in the older grades but there is no substitute for good ball skills at any position.

I’m guessing they play with a 28.5 ball?
Does he play any other sports?

As he gets older, I would put emphasis on developing a high release. Sometimes the lack of strength at an early age can develop bad habits.

I make him shoot a lot of one handed shots to build his shooting form. Not really concerned about his shot right now because of his age and strength. For the reason you stated. Yes the league he is in plays with a 28.5 ball.

15ft and in he shoots the ball high.

Look, keep an open mind and don't push the kid or put too much on him. With all the AAU stuff they can get burned out quickly. They're all playing year round now. You gotta take a step back and go do something else sometimes like fishing, camping, playing golf or just hanging out at the pool. Family time. I been there and have done it with my 2 boys. You're son reminds me a lot of my oldest(16 now). He could dribble and shoot as good as any kid and played on a loaded AAU team. After his 8th grd year he gave it up to concentrate on baseball. His choice not mine. Now my youngest son (13) is done and also playing only baseball. He's a lefty so he knew a coupe years ago that he's going to be best at. They still love the game (basketball) but I never would have thought when they were young, they wouldn't be playing high school ball. They will be what they want to be.

Nice crossover, good handles, puts the ball in the hole. Looked like he was only playing against short white kids though [winking]

Wouldn't that be cool dudeish though if your boy did end up becoming one of our boys and (as Rupp would say) lead us down the Glory Road? :) But make sure that's his dream and no one else's.

As far as the whole burnout thing goes, that happened even to Michael Jordan...it along with the passing of his father was the main reasons for his first retirement after the 1993 season.

You didn't see the big man in the middle...some of the kids are mixed so they blend in.

He gets more competitive play at the Rec playing against older kids.

With all due respect, he can't handle my grandson, and he is just in the fourth grade.

He's playing to his competition to be nice.....Your grandson would get done it just like the rest of this kids his age and 6th, 7th, and 8th graders...no offense.

I'm choosing not to let my kid win these games by himself...That's not basketball.
